Will we see war soon? Will we learn to coexist crammed into a tiny spot? Will we figure out what happened to the six city states that failed to show up? Who knows! Here's my thoughts on everyone's play this episode, also skip to Rythian's if you want to learn a bit about how spies work! Kirsty - Good for her deleting a settler instead of settling a bad city but her best spots to settle were on her own continent a hundred turns ago and there’s still a decent spot to the right of Ha Penis with two wheat, cows, a lake, and a fish tile. Kirsty has a lead in technology but it really doesn’t feel like it with no great units protecting her cities and no discernible production bonus nor is she nearing any game changing technologies. With her being a good two to three techs ahead of second place she should be at factories now or soon but we see she is just barely researching the printing press at the end of the episode. Having a tech lead does you no good if you don’t know which techs to get to keep that ahead. Rythian - Unwillingness to manage his workers means nobody’s going to improve any of the fish around his new settle. Also, yes Rythian, you can indeed send spies to cities other than the capitol. The rate spies steal is based off of a convoluted formula to determine a star rating for the city. 5 stars is given to the city that produces the most science in the empire and other cities get a star rating based on what percentage of that number they produce. It is also then reduced again by constabulatories and police stations. Usually the capitol produces the most science because it tends to have the most population but this is not always the case. This star rating is what determines how long it takes for a spy to steal a technology. Think of it as 5-stars as being getting 100% speed, while 2.5 stars taking twice as long, and so on. Duncan - Continues to moan about Lewis running away with the game but seems completely unwilling to do anything about it. Daltos messaged him proposing an alliance against Lewis and he didn't respond for the whole episode. He is, I think, though, going for military tech before factories. We see him researching Metallurgy at the end of the episode which does lead to military science and cav which “should” have no problem running over Lewis’s longswordsman and crossbows. However he's not doing anything to prepare for a cavalry charge, ie: building knights now to upgrade the turn you research calvary so you can attack the moment you unlock the technology. Lewis - Quietly he has been allowed to slowly grow on the side of the map and while he didn’t need those island cities they are in decent spots that should add to his empire when they grow (And we see he has sent four workers over to develop the islands instead of just let them linger on their own). Also, yes, Lewis, we really do appreciate you guys having the streamer panel on. It’s very nice to see what policies and faiths everyone has chosen. Now if I could just convince everyone to turn yield icons on. Would love to see Lewis send his cargo ships to feed his new island cities instead of continuing to feed pair and straight. At the end of the episode, we see Lewis has gone for Navigation instead of cavalry from military science or factories from industrialization. I would very much classify this as a blunder as building frigates gets him almost nothing of immediate value. Maybe he takes everyone else's island settles? But then what? They won't stop his three neighbors from attacking him by land with far better units. Daltos - Daltos continues to quietly farm the barbs of the southern islands which nobody, so far, seems interested in settling. I’m not sure why he insists on telling people about his steady supply of free science, culture, and gold. But Daltos, you do you. I’m glad to see someone at least try to form an alliance against Lewis, even if Duncan so far has not replied to your missive. As we don’t see Daltos’s view late in the episode I can’t say for certain what tech he’s heading for but I assume he of all people, at least knows the importance of industrialization and getting factories up as soon as possible. So I have some hope of him being the first to an ideology. With a potential war against Lewis looming, getting factories for their production and autocracy from ideology could be a huge boon in future episodes.

Doesn't navigation give an upgrade to ports that make them very strong? Lewis has a lot of sea tiles so I guess it's worth it?

@@cassu6 You unlock the cargo port with navigation which gives +1 production from sea resources. It isn't awful but when you look at Lewis's lands there are not very many sea resources (I count 4 fish tiles around his mainland coast and maybe about that many reachable but not yet in the territory of his island settles). It does also improve how fast you build boats, but once again, what is he going to do with the boats other than take other people's islands?
