To me, Hal was the best tv-sitcom dad ever! He wasn't the average comedy husband and father, who drank beer, watched football and kinda love-hated his family. Hal was passionate about his family, his especially, but also other things. Even though he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, he stayed curious about things. He was never afraid to show his emotions or any vulnerability. All this made him kinda more "realistic" (as realistic as Malcolm in the Middle could be) and also a better role model for young boys watching TV (as much as you can get a "role model" from TV)

What’s amazing about Cranston as an actor is that he disappears into his roles to such a degree, you never think about his other iconic characters while watching them. Hal and Walter White actually share some similar qualities (both family men, both have neurotic tendencies, both share a proclivity for running around in their tighty whities), but Cranston plays them so differently they’re easily discernible from each other. Two of the greatest TV performances and characters of all time. This dude is an absolute master of his craft.

You truly never question whether or not he’s constantly head over heels for her. Even in the episode where Lois is stuck in bed with mono, and Hal is completely and utterly oblivious to the fact that his neighbour is not only flirting with him, but is convinced they’re going on dates- while all Hal ever sees is just a neighbour who could use a friend. He remains oblivious to what’s happening even when the neighbour “breaks up” with him, saying she’s not ready, and just assumes she just isn’t ready for the neighbourhood party. Hal is so infatuated with Lois that he can’t even fathom other women flirting with him.

Heard someone once say that it’s because this is a dark comedy that reverses the common family dynamic seen in American sitcoms. ‘Normal’ TV dads have a wandering eye and make ‘ball and chain’ jokes about their wives, and this is a subversion of that, in that the parents are smitten with each other instead of secretly hating each other.

I've been binging "Breaking Bad" for the last week or so, currently at the end of "Ozymandias", and I just wanna see some happiness to remind me what laughter is. Man, Cranston can act!

Honestly, I love Hal's character. He works hard for his family, loves his wife and kids to death. Reminds me of my own dad

Hal was the perfect middle-ground dad, IMO. Unlike earlier sitcom dads, who were perfect or nearly perfect people, he's a deeply flawed human being. However, unlike many modern sitcom dads, hyperbolically stupid, lazy, and/or selfish, he loves his wife and kids, works very hard, and sacrifices A LOT to make sure they are taken care of, and there are times where he actually bonds with his kids and has fun with them.

Hal is that type of dad that is very goofy and has everything happen to him and when he acts smart something always has to go wrong. And i also just noticed that he always creates mayhem without knowing it man bryan cranston really sold his role
