Yet the character Bilbo (in the sense of character traits), all physical characteristics aside, was rather egocentric in my estimation after reading so many chapters about him. For example, he could have easily understood that he was far too removed from the situation to go to Mt. Doom, yet he seemed to have thought he had a chance.

I spent several years at an RAF Base in East Anglia in the mid 80’s, I was with the United States Air Force. One of my regrets in life was I didn’t stay in England when my service time ended. I loved your country and still do. I loved the history, the countryside, the weather, the people, the pubs and those wonderful pints. I traveled often while I was there. In Cambridge I enjoyed napping in the sun while lying in the grass next to the river after a lunch of fish and chips and a pint. I’m retired now and would love to spend my remaining years in England but your immigration rules won’t allow it. I do plan on returning for a few weeks of fly fishing and sitting on the bank of some of those rivers smoking my pipe.

This is so comforting and awesome at the same time. I have that very edition with Alan Lee illustrations. Im going to to a video on how I acquired it and the lifetime it has been with me. "Books have a life of their own. They pass from one to another. Always living on an endless journey." (my quote) Bree Town has a special place in my heart. When reading it, my mind created a perfect layout I could follow to the Prancing Pony to have mutton stew and cider ales and smoke my pipe and tarry with the locals. Its description is so vivid to the reader. Just brilliant. Thank you Malcolm.

As I recall The Prancing Pony in the movies was the only place when we get a little cameo from the director of the trilogy himself, Peter Jackson. He happens to be leaving the inn as he gets a big bite on a carrot. Interesting little fact. I've loved this charming yet somewhat ominous inn since the very first time I visited many years ago reading The Fellowship for the first time. An excellent worldbulding from the very beginning. Cheers.

Back in the early eighties I had the good fortune to live in the little village of Aldsworth in the Cotswolds, and I worked in the local inn - The Sherbourne Arms. This was a traditional old English inn and was patronised mostly by villagers and occassionally a passing traveller - I once served Tim Rice (the lyricist) with a cigar... I treasure my time working there, it was a great way to get to know the locals and all the gossip, and I always think of the parallels between such old inns and the Prancing Pony that Tolkein described so fondly.

But with great honor, I declare this man's Faith, Intellect, Wisdom, and Imagination resonate at the frequency of the one and only Great Gandalf the Grey. It is a humbling privilege to perceive the reality that we are yet the Hobbits, sitting eagerly, hanging onto every word that leaves the Wise Wizards mouth.
