I read you Tolkien's description of the first meeting with Strider and then tell a story of how a similar encounter happened in real life!

Yet the character Bilbo (in the sense of character traits), all physical characteristics aside, was rather egocentric in my estimation after reading so many chapters about him. For example, he could have easily understood that he was far too removed from the situation to go to Mt. Doom, yet he seemed to have thought he had a chance.

In my opinion, the scene in Bree is one of the best in the trilogy. The mood, tension, and overall feeling are perfect literature. It's cold and rainy out, smoky and loud inside. And the Riders are coming.

I spent several years at an RAF Base in East Anglia in the mid 80’s, I was with the United States Air Force. One of my regrets in life was I didn’t stay in England when my service time ended. I loved your country and still do. I loved the history, the countryside, the weather, the people, the pubs and those wonderful pints. I traveled often while I was there. In Cambridge I enjoyed napping in the sun while lying in the grass next to the river after a lunch of fish and chips and a pint. I’m retired now and would love to spend my remaining years in England but your immigration rules won’t allow it. I do plan on returning for a few weeks of fly fishing and sitting on the bank of some of those rivers smoking my pipe.

So I just wanted to express a sincere and profound thank you.

This is so comforting and awesome at the same time. I have that very edition with Alan Lee illustrations. Im going to to a video on how I acquired it and the lifetime it has been with me. "Books have a life of their own. They pass from one to another. Always living on an endless journey." (my quote) Bree Town has a special place in my heart. When reading it, my mind created a perfect layout I could follow to the Prancing Pony to have mutton stew and cider ales and smoke my pipe and tarry with the locals. Its description is so vivid to the reader. Just brilliant. Thank you Malcolm.

As I recall The Prancing Pony in the movies was the only place when we get a little cameo from the director of the trilogy himself, Peter Jackson. He happens to be leaving the inn as he gets a big bite on a carrot. Interesting little fact. I've loved this charming yet somewhat ominous inn since the very first time I visited many years ago reading The Fellowship for the first time. An excellent worldbulding from the very beginning. Cheers.

Not to find something bad in something good, but I find the majority of the old inns are not what they used to be and the majority simply cater for townies wishing to eat posh grub at extortionate prices. Gone are the days of the humble sandwich and pork pies atop the bar for those who wish for a slight bite between pints. Banning smoking finished the pubs of days gone by helped by the ever increasing hike in Ale prices. However, Thankyou for sharing another snippet with us Malcolm it’s always enjoyable.
