I love these videos, but I can't help becoming unspeakably envious of you. I think you have my perfect life. The life of literature and writing, smoking your pipe while talking about Tolkien. What a pleasure. It's even made me think about joining the ministry. I've had a long crisis through faith and think it might be best for me to study to become a priest. I was confirmed as an Anglican when I was twelve, then went through many years of tacit atheism (due to peer pressure) and on a very esoteric level think I might believe in God again. I'll have to wait and see. And I think I need a degree before I'd get into a seminary.

Most appropriate dear Sir 👍. I feel like we are standing on the edges of Mount Doom, surrounded by a belching sea of molten magma, curtains of flickering flames tonguing at our skins. But often times, truth is stranger than fiction

I very much appreciate these videos Malcolm! I believe I found your channel by researching smoking pipes that are works of art… Then you rekindled my love for Lord of the Rings books… so I am re-reading the lot and I have also been reading books in my shelves that were frosted with dust… I credit you and your channel for myself switching off the TV and sitting down with a book! Many thanks, from the USA ( in New England ) Cheers!

I wish I really understood how to read and understand poetry. Guess my junior high literature class didn't cover that. Mr. Guite I really enjoy hearing you read the poems. Merry Hanning

When I Survey is one of my favorite hymns. Thank you for discussing the hymn today. I was at the Getty Sing 2024 in Nashville and sang in the choir. Also, I interrupted you on Monday morning as you were checking in and asked if you would autograph my copy of your wonderful book, David's Crown. You graciously agreed, for which I extend great thanks. It was an honor to meet you for that brief encounter and a great joy to hear you read your poems in the sessions. You are a treasure. God bless and keep you. Merry Hanning

I just want to curl up on the rug in front of that fireplace and drift to the sounds of grandfather reading, the crackling firewood and the scent of his pipe drifting through my dreams.

Dear Mr. Guite, do you feel that the text of Shakepeare’s plays in “The Arden Shakespeare Third Series Complete Works” is a preferred version? I am looking at the Folio Society’s beautiful new complete works edition, and am not sure about the version of text which they have selected, as I’d really like to re-read a number of plays. I enjoy your time shared here immensely. Thank you. Best, Liz

Something i have thought about is the resources, science, and craftsmanship that goes into these things we love. The grains for beer the tobacco and wood for smoking.

You may have done a spell on it already, but I think another spell in the library on when Eustace is turned back into a boy in Voyage of the Dawn Treader would be lovely. It’s such a profound picture of how Jesus tears off our old selves and clothes us in new righteousness.

Hearing that aloud I was even more impressed by the use of alliteration that is so common in the Anglo Saxon poetry that Tolkien loved. My other observation is how modern the character of Eowyn is, a woman who disguises her gender but then uses it to her advantage, when you think this was written by a man in the late 1940's, well over 70 years ago. People who have never read him but criticise his work for being too 'male oriented' forget he had very complex strong female characters like Eowyn and Galadriel.
