I personally think the most 2 professional snowboard channel in KZbin are SA and Malcom Moore. The other channels usually giving tips but they don't really building up the entire theory or system for whether beginner or elite snowboarders. I will keep recommending this channel to my friends and other ppl. Thanx Malcom!

As a skier turned snowboarder at the age of 55 in the effort to enjoy my 16 year old's enthusiasm for snowboarding with him I have looked for ways to expedite my learning process. Of numervous teachers and videos I've watched Malcolm's turorials are the easiest to understand and relate to, his teaching style clear, practical, and applicable. He's helping me stay off my arse and stay safe while having a lot of fun and getting better and more confident on the slope. Thanks Malcolm!

I'm almost 50 years old and started snowboarding last season. It has been quite hard to get an idea of the basic technique. Things i've learned during my four decades on skis have proven to be a bit of an hindrance, not an advantage, because snowboarding is totally different domain. This was really helpful, kinda like mind-opener. My skipole is my magicwand for now - nevermind that it really makes me look like grandpapa on the hills!

I started riding in 1989, rode until until 2002 when an injury forced me into taking a couple seasons off. Life is funny and a couple seasons turned into almost 20 years, I'm just getting back onto the hill this year. I'm consistently amazed at how bad my technique is. KZbin is a great innovation for coaching and I think I've found my favourite coach now.

@0:45 This is exactly my problem now. On steeper runs, I'm having to kick out my back leg to turn to my heel edge. And sometimes when I pick up speed, that back leg feels stuck and I just bail. It's great to see you show that my posture is the problem. Seeing videos my friends took, my posture looks exactly like that example with my right shoulder already open and arms flailing in the opposite direction. Can't wait to try correcting my shoulder and posture next time out. Great vid and demo.

Malcolm, this is honestly mind-blowingly the best improvement video I have ever seen. Everything about it was well thought out and well explained from the dialogue to the cameraman’s camera angle. The only thing you could have improved on would have been handing back the pole to a waiting skier at the end. Making skiers wait for snowboarders should be a regular occurrence in your future videos!

Hi Malcolm! I must say, your videos have helped me enormously. You have a way of explaining things that I find easy to understand. I watched this particular one before I hit the slopes this week and focused on posture. I could definitely feel the difference when my posture was better. As a beginner, I was feeling a bit frustrated that I was not progressing but this was key! With good posture, I felt much more stable, like I was flowing down the mountain with intention rather than by hope or guesswork, and no big tumbles either! I can't thank you enough for making these videos, including some of your other ones emphasizing carving and connecting turns. Something's coming in the tip jar!

Your videos and this one show me exactly what is needed for me to continue to progress into the next Level! Music is so amazing as well! Thank you once more Malcolm!
@kuanhau43232 жыл бұрын
I think biomechanically it is harder to push your back leg out on the toe side. Which means picking up more speed on toe side and trying to scrub it off on the heelside. This video really hits the fundamentals which really helps you from being uneven between edges. Basically he covers it in the first couple of sentences. “Back to fundamentals”. The ski pole and feeling based strategy is genius.
@malcolmmoore2 жыл бұрын
Thanks guys 🙌
@TheShift1313 Жыл бұрын
Malcom i really appreciate the effort you put into your content. These fundamentals are really hard to feel on the hill especially with less than ideal conditions but as things get wild i always take a breath and just try to think about upper and lower body alignment as well as your fore/aft video in the turns. Great stuff! I am a lifetime skier but skated a lot in my youth and wake boarded. Now in my 40s and not having been on a snowboard in 20 years it really helps to understand these fundamentals. When you are young you can crash til you get it but us older guys really enjoy the specifics about how and why this works!

Aloha Malcom, Skied earlier (12+ yrs) switched to ski/sb in my early 40s. Boarding exclusively for ~15 yrs+. Took intermediate+ lessons in CO & CA (one instructor made video, really helped to see my own riding). Definitely heard from instructors what you are teaching here, BUT, YOUR explanations/DEMOS ON & OFF the hill are just spot on! I've sent it down blues & groomed blue/blacks. BUT everyone once in a while, I feel like I'm gonna catch an edge or I do; mainly on the FLATS = Slam! BUT now I believe the problem is I am not having my weight centered over my board at key times so when I do get to flat area w/slush the edge catches or board gets squirrely. I don't twist anymore & riding is decent but not progressing to more dynamic boarding like steeps & bumps. BUT, after watching this video I am planning to go back to the basics for sure - the posture, the edge control, balancing over board at the RIGHT time, the steering knee/toes (really helps). I have to workout away from the hill to keep up w/my own expert riding 37 y.o. daughter AND to continue riding at 65+ (female = less muscle mass & front "regular" knee hurts more now). Again, the time/value proposition of a busy motivated boarder person watching your videos are much better than most I've seen over 25+ yrs now. Thank you for doing such an excellent job of explaining the basics & more!! Mahalo...

I really liked how this video inadvertently shows how turning your upper body turns your snowboard via independent knee movement as you preach (you can clearly see how rotating your upper body pushes your front knee over the board edge initiating the turn) as long as you are using proper snowboarding form (which this video is trying to teach/correct). So many other snowboarding tutorials teach you to turn by saying your board follows your upper body but so far I haven't seen anyone really explain how this happens until it clicked watching this video (by rotating front knee/toe over edge). Now that I understand that is also becomes clear how bad posture and form can interrupt that process and leave you lacking control. Maybe you already have a video on this (I have only watched a few) but if not it would be cool to see one. In short a video on how a snowboard turns (switching edge by changing both edges at the same time or ideally by changing front edge first), how the most common methods taught (rotating shoulders/upper body) achieve this action and how common bad postures or habits interrupt this process.

I only started a little while ago, BUT after a few runs in the Bunny Park, the instructor I had RESET all my gear. he fixed & adjusted my bindings for me & then changed the lead leg. I thought I was goofy (right), turns out after his resetting my bindings and getting me to try left (regular) WHAT A DIFFREENCE. So yes, it could be lots of little things that add up to incorrect stance / posture.

Excellent video, it makes perfect sense the way you explained it. I have an unrelated question, when going on to my toe edge, should I be pressing my shins into the tongues of my boots? Or lifting my heels (like tip toeing)?
@robpalmer39192 жыл бұрын
shin into boot ( rising onto toes very bad habit )
@ralphybushman51842 жыл бұрын
As Rob said, press the shins into the boot. If you find that you're on your toes a lot, make sure that your boots are the right size. Big oversized boots will give you heel lift and force you to use your toes and 'lift your heels' to go toe side which is incorrect. You should be pushing your hips forward to engage the toe. When you're strapped in it should feel like the board is a part of your feet and moving your knees forwards and backwards should easily lift the edges of the board without much wiggle room.

I need to play this video when I’m on the slope. I’m trying to get over the complete beginner phase of sliding from top to bottom, but the moment I pick up a little bit of speed, my posture goes out the window. Mostly, I struggle to keep my stance centered (I instinctively throw my weight on the back leg when it gets steeper), but a lot of the things you mentioned here (sticking my arm out in front of me bc I’m all twisted, not having enough leverage to turn with my knees, etc.) I’ve also noticed recently. Next time I’m with my wife, I’ll steal one of her ski poles to do this drill.

I've always wondered why my trailing arm always sticks out. Now I know I'm unconsciously over rotating so I can work on correcting that next time I'm shredding !! Cheers.

hm, seems like most of the steering is done with the upper back and shoulder rotation. I've been using my legs too much. Not only that but it's a subtle twist. I also tend to put too much weight on my back foot to compensate for speed because I'm still not comfortable going too fast. This video definitely helped understand the mechanics of snowboardng better, thanks.

Hi, thank you for the education is the first thing I want to say. I find out that I have problems with my back. I can’t get my back straight when I’m on my board. I try to force myself to straight up my back but it feels uncomfortable for some reasons. Maybe I’m afraid of fall or there’s something’s wrong with my upper body? I hope you could give me some help on that. Can’t say thank you enough

Are you planning to cover more advanced riding tips like moguls, icy hard slopes, steep slopes < 35°, riding couloirs etc ? It would fill a huge gap in the "KZbin tutorial world"

Yeah, I will get onto that for sure, it doesn't necessarily fill me with pleasure the idea of finding the worst conditions on the mountain, but yeah, I will get to it!

Malcolm this was super helpful and will try it the first chance i get ! Btw maybe you did maybe you didn't BUTi feel that you are not compresing your videos the right way befoure uploading them, bacause the 4k is pixelated and youtube does that. If you are using vegas pro or premiere pro you should check the best way of saving videos for youtube, there are things you can do to maximize the quality especially for the 4k viewers.

Love the content and thanks for all the information Malcolm. I've been boarding for past 20 years and feel like an above average rider, but when of piste like in some steeper trees where the run has started to get bumped out, I tend to struggle finding the right position and control my speed. This leads me to break check hard on heel side and lose any flow. Could you speak to this at all? Much appreciated
