Something that really helped me not fall when getting off the lift was to look up and where I was going. I don't know if it was just me or others do this, but I would always look down at my feet waiting for the right moment to get off the lift, and even when I stood up and got off the lift I would still keep looking down when sliding off. One of the lift operators told me to look up and where I was going when getting off the lift and this has significantly reduced the number of times I fall down.

One big beginner mistake is trying to break your fall with your hands. I learnt the hard way. Just tuck your hands in whenever you fall

For a second year rider, not staying on flat ground too long is one of the best tips. I was getting frustrated catching edges until I moved to a slope, realizing I simply didn’t have enough angle on the flat area I was learning on.

100%. My first week snowboarding, I was doing well, but on the last afternoon, we has to traverse loads of cat tracks. My experienced buddies were fine, but spent the whole time on my own and stacking hard. Nearly ruined snowboarding for me!

My first day on the slopes, I was trying to rush my toe to heel turns, meaning I kept catching my heel (luckily at slow speeds on shallow slopes). Learning to be patient and let the board come round naturally was a huge help

And last on the list is not getting outside your comfort zone. I have a 14 y/o son that’s been snowboarding 2 full seasons and all he’ll do is leaf fall his heal edge all the way down the mountain. He’ll even go down black diamonds this way, but he refuses to put in any effort and learn how to make and connect turns. His toe edge wax is in perfect condition after a full season so you only ever have to wax half of the board. Meanwhile my 12 y/o daughter who has the same amount of days on snow is far beyond linking turns and is even in the park with me hitting boxes, rails and jumps.

So he doesn't do the falling leaf on the toe side as you have written; explain to him that he has no turns at the present! Start him on some toe side diagonals slips which will allow him to drop to the knees for comfort and it will teach him to open and close the ankles. Also get him to transfer weight to the front foot. There many different ways to skin the cat!

@@dannyz1975 hopefully your son is having fun. I don’t believe mine is. He spends probably more time in the lodge than on the slope as he is bored after a few runs. I guess I would be to if falling leaf was all I did for 2 whole seasons. All I know is I would have killed to be given the same opportunity by my parents as a kid. The only snowboarding I got to do growing up was hiking hills in flat country USA around town and 3 time I made it to a resort until I grew up moved out and took myself. It’s tough when the closest bunny hill is 3 hours ways and the next closest places are 5 plus hours.

My biggest issue is toe sliding. Haven't touched a snowboard in a long time. Went today in Whitefish. Fairly empty which was great but using my toes to carve I was avoiding it. Watching your videos tomorrow. I will implement what I have learned watching your beginner videos. Thanks Kev!

Today i had my second ever snowboard lesson and after that i continued snowboarding for d about 2 hours, but i do something in my turns that i don't know you're meant to do. Before every turn i first brake a lot, then i turn, my friend said you shouldn't do that but idk. I'd like to know ofc.

I feel like I have the fundamentals down and can find my way thru the mountains, but I always have a problem with speed control. Always end up on the side near the trees, defeated. What can I do to avoid that or better myself when going down a more steep slope?

I have the same problem. My snowboard teacher told me to press down more on the front foot. Your front knee should be bent and should lean into the mountain. That way you kinda even go UP the mountain for a bit if you exaggerate it and that slows you down. Hope that helps

New snowboarder question… if I ride with me left foot forward to start, should I avoid turning so that my right foot ends up forward? My body has a tendency to switch, even though I’m more comfortable with my left foot forward (which is how I start). I’m assuming this is “wrong” and that I should attempt to always lead with the same foot?

From my humble opinion it helps to load your body the way you want to go, lean on your downhill foot and use the twist in your body to kick the back foot back into position. Also, your downhill foot has twist into which ever way you want to turn. I.E. if your riding left food forward and you want to start turning to your right, twist your left foot forward and the right foot back the opposite way. Likewise to turn left dig your left foot heel in and your right toe in. Hope it helps!! I've made huge progress with those!!!!

Unless you are planning to learn switch from the start I would advise trying to always keep your left foot forward. Hope this help!

Am I the only person that sees the inherent danger or potential risk of injury for a child that size at those speeds. I'm all about encouraging my kids to challenge themselves, experience life and all its adventures but it's up to parents to exercise good judgement, just because your youngster can maintain her balance at a high speed does not mean she should be allowed. My 12 yo can drive a 4 wheeler fantastic, he's been driving for years. He's great and responsible for his age he could probably out maneuver at high speed most adults any day of the week , do we allow him to drive like that Heck No because we exercise good judgement .
