One of best off the slope excerise that can give you a feel of carving is by straping into your snowboard and have a chair in front of you so you can catch yourself when doing a toe side turn when you lean forward. Same goes with a heel side turn, have a chair behind you so you can get a feel of doing a heel side carve. Just make sure you and the chair are on carpet, or a rubber mat, or some kind of anti-slip surface so you or the chair doesn't slip/move out when you're doing this excerise.

Don't get too caught up in that. It is partly based on the conditions (first run softer groomers with no bumps), skill, but mostly on the type of board you're on. I am an expert boarder and there are some boards I have where you cannot do this no matter what. The tails on many boards will wash out long before you get that low.

Teaching myself , I finally got the hang of it. My biggest issue I think is that I'm turning to much and loosing speed so I end up not being able to make it down.. I would have to unstrap and skate to get to the next downward hump. Also, when I try and turn it seems like I'm slowing down too much instead of actually just turning and keeping speed. Not sure why.

Good tutorial homie. My only point of disagreement is making it sound like you can carve on a reverse chambered board. I ride a T.Rice 2011/12 board that is reverse chambered and love the turn response on it and carving on it. I've road cambered and reverse cambered and carve with no prob on either. If you have the technique down reverse or full cambered shouldn't be an issue. I did like how you pointed out to newbies to demo some boards and see what they like. Love your channel and for teaching people through vlogs. Lotta channels just showing there snowboard adventures, which is still cool but, mad love for you teaching people.

Hi Tommie, hi everyone, I am a girl (beginner to) intermediate snowboader with 173 cm height and about 53 kg body weight, shoe size about 37-38 (Europ size). I want to improve my riding, and lern to carve, better turning, maybe press and try some butter later and to ride powder. My question is: will a Ride Warpig 2020 with 143 cm (XS) better for me or a 148 cm (S)? Thank you all! And Tommie, I really like your videos and learned and still learnning a lot from them:) Thank you!!
@anawara
@anawara 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the warpig but I don't know if it'll be the correct board for the style of riding you mention. It has a rocker/flat profile which is better for things like riding in powder. It might not be ideal for carving and flat land tricks as a traditional cambered snowboard would be since it wouldn't have the same pop. It all has to do with the physics of a turn and how the shape of the board works to make that turn happen. Honestly the best thing for you is to try and demo different kinds of boards before you buy a particular one. Different profiles will help with different riding styles. It also depends on the kind of conditions that you'll ride the most. As for length, you should check the sizing chart. You can probably ride either lengths. The shorter board might feel less intimidating initially. But the 148 has a wider waist width (26cm) which is useful when carving so you don't boot out. Hope this helps!

I was actually teaching a young girl to skateboard the other day and was actually using the drill that he showed bleeding off speed by going uphill slightly on each carve. All of these rules and tips also apply on a longboard skateboard on a hill. I was actually using the same techniques on my longboard as I do on my race board on the snow. All of the weight distribution was the same and you can use a skateboard to practice carving. Treat the edges of the skateboard like the edges of your snowboard, just keep in mind you can't do skidding turns ;-)

@jacobiwolf77
@jacobiwolf77 3 жыл бұрын
Change what you're doing with your toes as you go perpendicular to the fall line, if you're toeside, pick your toes up, vice versa for heelside. Also pay attention to what you're doing with your knees, pulling them together for toeside and pulling them apart for heelside. This is happens pretty subtly as it is but over exaggerating the movement can give you an idea as to what it does, you can turn the board by doing that alone
@anawara
@anawara 3 жыл бұрын
How sharp your turn is will be a function of the angle at which you tilt your board, and the sidecut radius of the board. A higher tilt angle, means more the pressure on the board. More pressure will flex the board more hence leading to a tighter turn radius. That tighter turn radius will make your turn way faster and sharper than it would be if you had applied less pressure. Imagine drawing a circle with your board in the snow by tilting it on edge. The sidecut radius of your board is the maximum length of radius of that circle you drew by applying the least amount of pressure. For example, a board with a sidecut radius of 8m cannot draw a circle with a radius bigger than 8m. But it can draw smaller circles by putting more pressure and flexing the board more. So if you're turning too fast, you might have a short sidecut radius. Try to demo a board with a longer sidecut radius and see how it feels. I recently went from 8.1m to 9m and I could instantly feel a difference in my turns.

@anawara
@anawara 3 жыл бұрын
Whenever this happens to me, it's usually cuz I don't have even weight distribution on my edge with more weight on my front leg. You don't really need to use your shoulders to turn with carved turns though. In fact, you can grab your board with your leading hand while doing a heel side carve and the sidecut will still turn your board! It'll be a relatively wide turn depending on your sidecut radius. If you need to tighten it, you can do down unweighted turns or push-pull turns. Make sure you squat, and as he mentioned in this video, lift your toes up on both feet. Even weight distribution. Forward lean will help too! The weird thing about it is you'll basically be squatting with your back downhill, riding the downhill edge for a bit before the sidecut engages and starts turning you. Feels scary especially cuz if you catch that heel edge, you'll fall backwards down the hill. Unlike toe side carves where catching your toe edge will send you flying down the hill but at least you'll be able to see where you're going 😅

@@melissaerdmann8177 try doing a mute grab as you do the heel side carve. Grab your toe edge with your front hand. You can start by grabbing closer to the nose and the progressively moving the grab until it's between your feet. This will keep your front shoulder from opening up in the turn. The reason opening the leading shoulder can lead to skidding the turn is that that can take pressure off your back foot, which then reduces the edge engagement and make it more likely for the board to skid.

@@anawara Good advice. Most people don't squat down & deep enough. Usually, squat backwards so weight is behind the board & they wash out. BTW, it helps if your quads are in good shape.

@SuzN Suggest experimenting so you can dial in what works for you. I tried aggressive lean in angles, but found it uncomfortable. Use either neutral---most upright or a little forward. It's really a personal choice. Half the fun is learning what works best for you.

When carving on groomers and you start getting lots of chop while in a carve. What is the best skill to help feel more secure and planted or is it possibly the board?
@AlanLamb11
@AlanLamb11 3 жыл бұрын
It can be the board edges are super dull or even rusted if the groomer is somewhat iced up or the board is possibly too small for your frame or the reverse camber thing they mention but most likely you just need to push into the carve harder with your legs. The more chop and pushback you get the stronger legs you need so after doing a couple runs like that your legs can be really shakey unless you are boarding 20+ days a season or keeping in really good shape off-season. Pushing into the carve is not the same as leaning, you can lean if you have enough speed and can stay under control but if you don't want to follow the fall line (line down the center of your turns) and stay with more gentle S turns then you need to push into the turn and maintain body stability with your back arm extended out towards the tail of your board and front arm aiming towards the direction you are turning. You ideally will be aiming with your shoulder but when you get anxious it can be easier to think of aiming with your hand as that will pull your shoulder where you want it to be and keep you more centred over the board. I see a lot of people waving their arms around or counter-rotating when they get into chop trying to keep their balance because they are letting the board bounce them around on the crests of the chop. Push into the carve and trust your board, the only time that will fail is in some spring conditions where there is mixed rough chop with wet slush and pushing into the carve will spin you or flip you around so going light and feeling the snow with your board and timing your turns for the slush is usually best. Or just rely on quick reflexes in those conditions. ;-p

Hi! I’m confused on the difference between carving and turning from left and right? Besides the fact that the board is making that line mark when you carve.

I can do sharp and clean toeside turns, but i can't get aggressive heelside carves without sliding. This is a big problem for me because i do boardercross racing, and on some tracks i have to do very sharp heelside turns, but i end up skidding and losing speed.

How do you handle this when the snow is scraped away and you end up with compacted snow that's slick or ice?
@FierceTable
@FierceTable 3 жыл бұрын
Lock in the edge and try not to change direction abruptly while on ice. Keeping your knees bent allows your body to absorb little bumps while keeping your board in contact with the ground...if your legs are stiff at all any little bump can knock you out of the carve taking away all your control. Other than riding flat across ice (which isn't practical most of the time and leaves you at the mercy of the fall line and going too fast) you will have far more control carving across ice as opposed to skidding.

what are your thoughts on carving with a rocker board compared to camber? i am brand new (3 days on a snowboard so far) and bought a used board not knowing anything...turns out its a true twin rocker (aperture spectrum 158 MW)...i have it set 15, -15 with rear binding center, front binding 1 slot back...having a blast so far but i dont even know what i dont know...ya know? ;P
@jacobiwolf77
@jacobiwolf77 3 жыл бұрын
Pure rocker boards aren't great for carving, they are good to learn on because you're less likely to catch an edge but consequently they're harder to get the edge to engage on the snow. The stance you have is pretty good for riding switch but if the bindings are set one place back from center you just have to be careful about having a little more edge length behind you when riding switch

Can u make carved turns on black runs or steep blues ? Or is it to steep and the turns are only skidded? Trying to achieve this

Same! But I think you need crazy edge hold and a pretty short sidecut radius to make smaller turns so you don't get too fast.
@jacobiwolf77
@jacobiwolf77 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, just make bigger turns bring your board across the fall line to control your speed. As you get more comfortable you can stay in the fall line and make shallower turns but beware of the speed this gives you. If your black runs are bumps, they are a different monster, but there aren't many mountains that have bumps like my home mountain. If your blacks are groomers the principle is the same, you just need to get comfy with the steep
