I see many people in the comments asking the planes to be taken back. But wouldn’t china take advantage of this situation and put forward their own aircraft and also offer to train and lease them ? China would gain another foothold in the region if done so. I find this more concerning than the fact that the Maldives are facing problems which was bound to happen. China will find a foot hold in the region using debt trap it will lease its aircraft and pilots for a fee.

China will not do it for free. And if they allow Chinese military to operate Chinese planes instead, then they will lose the next elections on 'China out' campaign. So the current govt will never allow Chinese military to enter Maldives.
