This week started with Indian social media and the TV media anchors, both, finding a new “enemy” to hate on, as they campaigned against Maldives.
It started with the dear leader’s visit to Lakshadweep, after which speculations began that it was a message to Maldives. Then, following derogatory comments by three Maldivian ministers, the Indian social media erupted with anti-Maldivian sentiments.
Our usual suspects on TV news were no different. They dedicated a generous part of their primetime to hating on Maldives. Republic Bharat’s Syed Suhail and Times Now Navbharat’s Sushant Sinha stated that it is laughable that a nation, “as small as Maldives” in size, is trying to take on India.
Meanwhile, CNN-News18’s Rahul Shivshankar used all of his herculean vocabulary to ask the most basic questions. While all this was going on, India Today and Times Now invited Sherlyn Chopra and Poonam Pandey to discuss the geopolitical situation.

Hello Manisha ji - Greetings from Juba - capital of South Sudan the youngest nation that most Indians may not know of. I love your shows and what you said here about our myopic understanding of the world and our attitude towards our 'small' neighbours.... When will we understand that many of our smaller neighbours are able to attract and earn a lot bigger incomes than India from tourism?! Also honestly, let us introspect on the cleanliness that is now being thrown at us! This is honestly a real issue that many of us may not want to acknowledge, but a true fact! Please let us wake up - go round and see what is the level of hygiene our South East Asian neighbours have maintained in their services - I have not been to Maldives, but can only vouch for places I have been to - and see how we can reach there before ridiculing or thumping our chests! I know for a fact that even 3rd tier towns/ cities in our neighbouring SE nations the quality of hygiene exceeds our first tier cities - and at a fraction of the costs. Please wake up and not be defensive - surely it galls when responsible people like ministers of a country make such comments - but then as you say this is a miniscule country - in Indian parlance - this could be like a ZP councillor making some rant - yet - take it seriously and see that a tiny country like Maldives can earn so much in revenue by just selling itself as a tourism spot that even a relatively poor country like India can provide the 11% of income through their largest revenue earner. Learn and Respect - not Envy/ Resent and retrograde.

Respect is not given, it is earned. The current Maldives government came into power by spewing venom against India from day one, they were using derogatory language for Indians and Indian culture. They even make fun of our Religion. The previous Government was friendly with India and no Indians said anything about them even our Film stars promoted Maldives in India. And India throughout history helped the Maldives in various ways, During COVID we sent free Vaccines to them, when there was a drinking water shortage in the Maldives, India stepped in and provided drinking water and there throughout history India helped them in various ways. You are not an Indian that's why you don't feel the disrespect we felt, maybe you will understand when somebody else will disrespect your country and your culture.

Good piece of work but was expecting more from NL on how Maldives too is important for India , on Indian Ocean Region and Geopolitical crisis may occur if Maldives and China deepen their strategic partnership.. as china has already invested huge sum on infrastructure in Maldives . It's just not about tourism between India & Maldives. Mainstream media must refrain from making much comments until GOI makes such official notification.

Do they realise how difficult it is to go to the Lakshadweep islands? It's not like the Adamans because you need a very hard to get permit to go to Lakshadweep. Also. You can go to only a few islands open to general public. Also, there's no alcohol permitted on the islands aside from one or two resort islands. The other islands aren't meant for tourism at all, it's just regular people living their lives. Also, that nonsense about Maldives and their Muslim population is comically ironic in this context.

@@somnathpaisa As I said you can only got to one or two resort islands. And the cruise is also confined to a few islands and you can't actually stay on the islands. Also getting permission to go to Lakshadweep is very difficult/time consuming. At least that was the case in 2018.
