This week, Newslaundry turned 12 years old. Against all odds, we’ve brought you ground reports, podcasts, video stories, media critique and shows. And this week, we will dissect the useful as well as the most ridiculous aspects of the Uniform Civil Code recently passed by the Uttarakhand assembly.
As the BJP government tried to be a nanny state by introducing mandatory provisions to register live-in relationships, our usual suspect, Sudhir Chaudhary, explained to us what all women want when they are in relationships.
But that was not all. With the UCC in place in Uttarakhand, most of the TV news anchors remained fixated on how Muslim men cannot have four wives now, and not much else about the bill.

I understand it's a bit too early for"register every live-in" in India. Good to have it going and smooth out all the rough edges, especially the parts around subjective judgement by the registrar. Out in Europe, US, SKorea, Japan, etc where live in relationships are common, there are many cases of abuse, stalking and harm by ex partners. Because there are so many people in the line-in lifestyle, the govts have a tough time passing any laws that can serve as a deterrent for the abusers. UCC needs a 2.0, 3.0, etc etc. I'll bat for keeping it and more community consultation. The social mindset is at a tipping point.

The laws for in living relationships definitely seems to be very archaic in nature which seems to be preventing youngsters from practising live in and it definitely seems to be negative in their proposed UCC bill and it is worth mentioning and discussing to raise awareness Among the people so that these inconsistency can be rectified. But I also believe that some positive aspects of the bill should also be worth mentioning such as the inheritance law, legality of a child born out of wedlock, polygamy and polyandry ban, and the usage of terminology such as PARTNER instead of man and woman which seems to be a small step towards acceptance of gender neutrality. It is very true that the intention of BJP towards Muslims has always been questionable and the Muslims not accepting the bill seems to be justifiable. But there is one more aspect that should be considered, as you mentioned that even the founding fathers of our constitution wanted to implement UCC but were unable to do so in view of the Hindu Muslim tension at the time. But they believed that with time the societies will progress and it will be easy to implement UCC(this all is recorded fact by BR Ambedkar) But have the Muslim society in large progressed? That still remains the question. It can be clearly seen with the Shabano case that they haven’t really progressed even after almost 50 years of independence. Until they do so they might not be able to accept UCC and maybe a first step is needed somewhere to start it. You are a lovely channel and I have been watching your videos for quite some time now. Lately though I have observed that just like the Godi media is trying to work for a particular individual/ agenda and disregarding anything wrong done by that individual/ agenda, you are doing exactly opposite. You are working against that particular individual/ agenda that you are disregarding any thing right done by that particular individual/ agenda. Just a suggestion to improve your content. Awaiting much more engaging video in future 😊

I believe that there is no appeasement politics in this country, previous governments did this for Muslims and Current BJP government seems to be favouring Hindus which is also bad but there is no solution to this unless voters sidelines their religious biasness and vote for development of nation , employment, inflation.
