From my experience working with leopard geckos I will say females are much more curious! My females love when I change their enclosure up a little more than my male leopard gecko. My male on the other hand is a little more chill and doesn’t come out as much!

I have a male and he is the sweetest little angel ever :). He'll cuddle and take naps with me and if I hand feed him he's always a LOT more careful so he doesn't hurt me. He's a bit more hostile to other people and has bitten when strangers try to take him from his tank but he's always sweet to me and that's all that matters lol

I’ve had my first leopard gecko (a female) for a little over 4 years now, and just recently got another baby girl. Both of them have the most lovely personalities. And while my little one (whose more juvenile/young adult now) hasn’t gone through ovulation yet, my other female hasn’t had any reproductive issues besides the typical going off food once every year. The thought of any reproductive issues occurring does scare me honestly just because I love my girls so much, but so far they’ve been nothing but a joy to have. I wouldn’t be opposed to getting a male leo in the future, but I also wouldn’t be upset if all I could have were females haha

Hi Jessica, great choice of subject for a video. I have both male and female Leos. My Females are more adventurous and will attempt to go off exploring because they are looking for egg laying spots. Once the season ends they become more sedentary. The same with the males, during the egg laying season they are much livelier because they are focused on finding that female who's sent they can smell. I haven't a preference based on boy/girl BUT I do have favourites who just have a personality that gels better with me. The personality difference is quite remarkable considering they have all been raised with the same husbandry. I have been bitten once for the very first time which took me by surprise. It was my fault. I had been handling my geckos and had put a juvenile male back in his house after his human climbing time. My mature male Leo had been pawing the glass wanting his turn and I opened the door to let him climb onto my hand and He tasted my hand and bit my finger. WOW are his jaws strong!! He would not let go. I had to gently pry his jaws off me. I was surprised He had managed to bite through the skin and draw blood. Totally My fault for forgetting to cleanse my hands between Geckos. Lesson learned. stay safe and well :0)

I only have experience with male leopard geckos, but I would love to own females in the future as well. My leopard gecko, Harry, prolapsed shortly after I got him and it freaked me out. I was still in the taming process and I was handling him flat on my hand and he just suddenly "death rolled" like an alligator would do and made a little squeak. I had only had him for a week or so, so it was quite nerve racking. I left him alone for around 30 minutes to see if he would fix it himself and luckily when I came back into the room, he was like normal. It has been over a year now and he has never done it again. He is quite active and explores alot, but he is also quite good with handling now. He knows his name, or at least knows that "harry" means food and will come to the front of the tank when I say it which is really cute and not something I realized leopard geckos were capable of before I got him.

We have a super hypo tangerine , carrot tail , baldy girl. She is also huge , over 9 inches and the last time we weighed her weighed was 110 grams . From the day we got her when she was tiny, she has been so chill and very calm.

I found the part of the males being more chill with the females exploring as far as handling goes really funny because my male wants to jump off of everything and look around and for the most part my female just chills If I’m by a wall tho she seems to think she can climb it lol

This is o funny to me. Both of my geckos (1 male 1female) are the opposite of what u said. Like my boy is my buddy he’s relaxed when handling but loves exploring and he’s quite energetic and outgoing loves attention (I’d let ANYONE handle him he’s so relaxed just loves the warmth of your hands) Whereas my female, well let’s just say she hates me and idk why she’s very shy very flighty HATES being handled even though I try to handle both my geckos almost everyday and has tried to bite me on multiple occasions also: this video really helped me ease my anxiety about having a female gecko, im glad to know more than likely reproductive health issues usually stem from poor husbandry and other disorders. I always get worried when she ovulates that she’ll get a vitamin deficiency or get too skinny or become egg bound so this really helped me

We only have a male and he is super aggressive. If you even stick your hand in to grab his water bowl or something he might bite you. We’ve have him 15 years and he hasn’t had any issues thankfully but I wish we could handle him. He can’t have been very old when we got him, but he definitely wasn’t a hatchling. I’d like to get another or a fat-tailed and probably will look for a female. Thanks for the info!

Kenji is my first boy of my own (i had another boy in my life; he wasn't mine but I was around long enough to be friends with him). So While I'm still learning and getting used to Kenji, Delta has been amazing since I adopted her. She didn't hide or anything the first day, She acted really happy and excited in her new home :). I want 2 more of each, I have Until Dawn names saved for them!

I have 16 leopard geckos all 10 females I have had totally have had some kind of problem at one point in time. I still prefer the females because like you said they have better temperament USUALLY. But both are absolutely amazing and I would say they are equal In there own ways.

My first reptile that ive had for over a year now is my male leopard gecko. I didn’t know his sex when I first got him bc he was too young. But it was like a lilo and stitch situation because I picked him out and he was screaming and hissing at the worker and she was like “are you sure you want this one?” And that just made me want him more lol. He’s been an angel ever since and has never had an attitude with me and he is a very good boy. (Also just FYI I didn’t get him from petco or anything it was my local feed loft and they take very good care of their animals and when I got him they were telling me all of the places they were researching to get reptiles from and none of them were up to their standards except for the shipment they had when I got my gecko so I felt good buying from them.)

I'm a bit biased but my female, Jasper, is honestly fantastic. Very chill, though sometimes very active (she will yeet herself very suddenly if she's tired of being held) Although...when my friend was going through a "oh god are they going to sell my house" issue I fostered their female baldy and MY GOD Sunny NEVER accepted me. She and I were well acquainted bc I would be over at their place weekly sometimes more and she knew who I was but something about the house humidity, smells, lack of their owner...she threw a fit. For two months she frequently went on small hunger strikes. She'd kill her crickets and leave their corpses to rot in hidden places. She'd ignore her worms. It was honestly terrifying how moody she was. She is 100% a female, no questions about it, but she's got SUCH an attitude. Meanwhile Jasper asks for food on feed day 😭

I only have one, a male, and he’s awesome. Dude was fine with handling on the FIRST DAY in his new home (this was before I owned him- I wouldn’t handle a gecko on its first day in an environment). He’s never gone off food, only bit me once (feeding accident), and is pretty active. He has an excavation project he’s been working on around a slate hide I made him. No clue what he’s trying to do, but he really likes to dig in that one specific spot. He also uses said slate hide to climb up to the door and hang there. Sometimes I open it for him to see if he wants to come out, but he always just looks around and then walks back into the enclosure. I’m getting a second gecko soon, it’s a baby so there’s no telling what gender it is, but I’m kind of hoping for female since every pet I own is male. xD

I have both male and female geckos and one thing I would have added to the list is a bite if it were to happen. In my experience the males bite does alot more damage compared female. All 3 males that I've been bitten by bled alot and have scars from each of them ( the bites were my mistakes in earlier days of keeping).

I have a male leopard gecko and he has never even attempted to or bitten me. I’d never feel worried he would do that, he doesn’t seem aggressive whatsoever. He is very curious and likes to explore but does have times where he’s lazy of course. Idk it’s weird he doesn’t really fit into the male personality you explained. I’ve always wondered if he’s potentially a little special but I’m not sure. He used to have a very hard time being able to strike for his worms and crickets (sometimes it could take up to 20 minutes to feed him like 3) but nowadays he does a great job eating his food. So I sorta just assumed he was going through something? I never really knew, but as far as I know he’s healthy and doing fine now.

I don’t have reptiles, but I have cats and I’ve always found it interesting how people will prefer one gender over a another. Personally it’s not really a factor when I’m considering adopting. Something funny is my best friend used to only like boy cats and my dad only liked girl cats. However now she has a girl cat she adores and he has a boy cat he loves on. Funny how easily those preferences can be altered lol

I got my juvenile leopard gecko in September. Jury is still out on what sex I have. Temperamentally it seems great, it knows I’m the bringer of food and comes out when I approach the tank for any reason. On the other hand, if my bf talks in the room it goes for hiding. I don’t care what sex I have just excited to know once it’s an adult. Soon I would think it’s tail is starting to grow 😊

so far i've only had one female, she was my first leo. she's still my favourite and I miss her every day. but I swear she passed because of follicular stasis. i didn't know about it at the time and had just thought she didn't want to eat as much because it was winter time. by the time I took her to the vet it was too late and she passed after a week of feedings :( now I have 2 males and they're great but when I have the space and money for another I really want another female

I have a male Leo and he is the sweetest, most chill boy. he has never bitten me out of aggression (he thought my hand was food tho) and he is very chill to handling. he has bitten an ex-friend out of defense when they handled him. I think its bc he wasn't used to being held by anyone but me. my boy is too big to fit in one hand. he accepts head pets and back pets very graciously. he also likes to explore when I take him out and I had to lightly restrain him to put him back in his cage (I just curled my fingers around his body). you forgot to mention another pro of females. its possible to successfully cohab them with the right setup and monitoring.

How do you determi.e the sex of gekkos? Secondly I just was given 2 gekkos that I know for sure are overweight , what can I do at home to help make them healthy. I do not have a lot of money . So for a beginner who hasn't gotten a leo but has been preparing for years (me), would a male be easier to care for? Obviously I would love to have a female because of the personality and docile-ness of her, but I don't have much money for lots of vet trips. I have been debating for a looooonnnnggg time and I can't decide which gender is overall better. Basically what I'm asking is, would a male or female be easier for an absolute beginner who has no experience with reptiles?

My first was a male, my second was a female, and both have cost me the exact same amount. If you have your husbandry down & get a healthy abled animal, you should be fine regardless of the sex of the gecko.

I love both mygeckos. Both are males which is kinda funny cause I thought one was female for the longest time so she has a female name. But I don't plan on breeding or anything so I don't think it matters if I call my gecko a she. They just don't get along when I have them out so I can only have one out at a time (they're both in separate tanks).

Honestly I prefer male leopard geckos because they are bigger so there less like to get injured and they are more chill ( I’m talking about older leopard geckos bc my younger boy cheddar who is 1 year old is just a hyper mess) both my females have bitten me ( my older girl dip has bitten me 6 times and my younger girl cheese has bitten me 1 time and both where for no reason I guess they just wanted to) but I kinda don’t like younger male leopard geckos because there to active ( but it is funny to watch them go into breeding season watching them try to raddle there tails) 😂

i def agree with u! my og leo waldo is a bridge troll he doesn’t like being handled and is super lazy while all my females love being handled and are super social. the only exception is our other male houdini he’s nuts he was loose in our local pet store for months and we adopted him after they caught him. we take him out everyday if not multiple times a day because he’s super energetic and social more social then any other leo i’ve ever met
