My wife and I work with "Angels Among Us", an animal fostering group. We recently fostered a female Pomeranian. Actually, I should say foster failed her. Once we had her for a couple of days, we fell in love with her and couldn't let her go. I was never a small dog person but this little girl just worked her way under my skin. I should say I'm an ex-trucker and weigh, well, let's just say I'm over 200 pounds. This little ball of fur just knows how to melt me into a puddle. I've never known a more loving creature then our little "Belle Ami", French for beautiful friend.

Thank you so much for sharing. I love your story. I've thought of fostering Pomeranians but, I fall in love too easily and would end up keeping them all. Pomeranians are special and can turn the lease likely person into a small fluffy dog lover. My uncle who has would in construction his entire life just lost his beloved Pomeranian that he had for over 15 years. That little guy when with him everywhere. Pomeranians are some of the best friends I've ever had.

I know what you mean. I used to foster dogs and they asked me to foster a kitten. Game over. That kitten is now 4 years old and she thinks she runs the house. I told them I couldn’t do cats because I would end up with a house full of them. I would be the same with poms too. 😂😂

@@frmdaway Lookup rescue groups in your state. Even if you can’t foster you could donate or volunteer. I’m from Arkansas and because we have so many rural areas we have a big problem with dogs and cats needing homes. So we have several rescue groups here. Alot of people in rural areas don’t get their pets spayed/neutered and they let their animals roam free so once they have babies it’s not uncommon for them to put them in a box, come into town and drop them in a parking lot or on the side of the road. It’s so sad.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a best friend like this is one of the most challenging things in life. It can sometimes make you question if putting yourself through the pain of loss is worth it. It always is though. The years of love and joy that these little fluffy buggers bring is worth it. The stronger the bond and love is the harder the loss feels. Healing and grief takes time and never completely goes away but, remembering the good times helps and will start to overshine the sadness. When you are ready a new fluffy friend may also help you heal. Thank you for sharing.

I'm so deeply sorry for your loss. I lost my 11 year old black greyhound Revan on 12/28/22 and it broke me in more ways than I can explain. He was my child. His two brothers, Tyrion and Gendry, both greyhounds, kept me going through the hardest of it. My fiance and I decided to get a pomeranian puppy, Inder, who was born three days after Revan passed. He's a black pom with a little bit of white, exactly the same as Revan. He brought a bit of Revan's light back into our lives. I hope you meet another dog one day who will remind you of your beautiful pom. Revan is in his spot in the sun, in a beautiful urn, with his pawprint and fur as well, surrounded by an indoor garden. They're never really gone, not if we don't let them go.

I took my little pom baby fluffball at home last year as a 13 weeks old puppy. It's a cute little boy, now a flyweight with 6,6 pounds and with the most perfect birthdate (22/2/2). He's cuddly all the time, playfull, sassy and he can ignore me very good. But the good thing is that he doesn't mark everywhere and he's not humping around. He is a very healthy tiny fluffball and the best and cutest creature that could happen to me. After many years of suffering in my personal hell, destiny gave me a new sparkle of life that I can care for and make my life worth living. My 3 lb boy is the biggest love bug. Doesn't want anything to do with other dogs period. Just wants 24/7 365 being with my wife or myself. Demands accompany us everywhere. Loves car rides cause he gets to be with us. He is a crazy guard dog afraid of nothing and guarantee would give his life protecting us. He is an absolute fantastic gentle loving dog with anyone outside the home. So calm and gentle. But you step foot in his yard or near his family or home and he goes batshit crazy. He sounds terrifying. Love this little guy. He literally looks like a stuffed animal when I carry him around. Poms are awesome but need need need your constant company and bark at any little micronoise that is bothersome. I had German Shepherds K9 s my entire life and they were smart af. But I swear this pea brain is tons smarter. It has a vocabulary comprehension better than me. Learns new words instantaneously. So smart that it hurt it's leg one day and loved the attention so much it carried on pretending after fully healed. How I know? Because the slippery bastard got busted one day hopping on wrong leg and we told him. So he switched up to other leg. Never thought I admit it but love this little chicks dog.

Omg! I love the story about him faking his leg injury to get more attention. He sounds similar to big cream boy Murphy. Super loving and needy as well as being major watchdog. He comes across as a dufus at times but, then can read body language clues about simple things. He can understand the words camping and camper if we say them he starts to lose his mind and climbs up on the windowsill to see if the camper is outside. I think people can easily underestimate how smart Poms are still they look like stuffed toys. They are awesome dogs! Thanks for sharing.

Of all my dogs and my few horses, thse 2 were my closest "fur babies". God willing, and I pray He is, I will somehow be able to get another pommy in my life. Isn't it funny how each dog is different but, there are so many similarities among the genders. We have found two of our dogs from the AKC marketplace. It looks like Oregon currently has two breeders with pups marketplace.akc.org/puppies/pomeranian/oregon?location=Oregon. The state of Washington has some too. marketplace.akc.org/puppies/pomeranian/washington?breed=201&location=Washington&page=1. Good luck with your puppy search. Also, be open to other states. My husband flew to NC and NY to get our last two pups (we live in florida). The price for the trip and puppy was less than if we had gotten one in state at the time. Prices can vary drastically to around 1500 to over 5K.

I have a male and female siblings. I agree with your assertions. The male is so clingy and would sit on my lap all day every day. Sometimes I have to lock myself away just to get a little space! Honestly, it’s like having a toddler all over again. Except my male is much smaller than the female as he was the runt. They were only two and three pounds when I got them but now they are 12 and 15. They are way too fat and I can’t seem to get them to lose weight. These are the first dogs I have ever owned. My husband passed away 4 years ago and I got them. They are very spoiled and only want to eat treats and will only eat their food when I hand feed them. I have tried every different type of food and they don’t seem to like anything. I am older, but not as old as one might think, being a widow- as I was widowed at 55. Meaning I am quite capable of walking them, which I do every day. But they tire quickly and are unable to walk very far. Although the breeder told me not to walk them the for the whole first year. I am wondering now if that was a mistake and added to their obesity. If I don’t give them treats or hand feed them, they just refuse to eat. When they are hungry they get so hyper, I always give in! Ugh, I’m at a loss at what to do. They need to lose weight- it is not healthy for them. 😢
@allaboutpoms Жыл бұрын
It's tough since they are such tiny dogs to begin with. I think like people every dog does have a different metabolism. Two of our dogs gain weight so easily and our biggest boy Murphy is always very slim. They are definitely not like big dogs when it comes to exercise. I agree that they will tire quickly and depending on the weather it can be challenging (too hot here in Florida for a lot of outdoor exercise). We have many people in our house, so they are slipped extra treats and human food which adds to our issue. In your case, my suggestion is to try a couple of things. I would measure out your dog's food and slip that amount up throughout the day. depending on your routine. Generally, Adult Pomeranians should eat a quarter (1/4) to one-half (1/2) cups of food per pound of their weight per day. I would double-check with your vet on what each dog's ideal weight should be to make sure it's the right amount. I wonder if they would enjoy puzzles where you hide the food and they try to get it out. For exercise, I would try getting some fun toys to try to get them moving. I have one dog that will chase tiny tennis balls when I throw them in the house. Even stuffed toys can work if they will chase after it. Even if it's for a couple of minutes you can do it often throughout the day to get your pups moving. When your dogs are hyper use that time to play and get them moving before you give them their food. I hope this helps a bit.

I have a crazy black mini pomeranian. He was gifted to me when a friend was stationed to Germany. I had just lost my toy poodle of 10 years to some nasty infection that drained my account. She was worth every penny and would never had stopped. But I was so down. My buddy came from Maine to drop My new pup off. I could tell right off bat I was in for a completely different pup. He was my first male. So there was that. He was hiking his leg often. Had to walk him ALOT to make sure he was empty and teach him no marking or pooping. In a month he understood. But man. He would mad mark to show me we had an issue. Lol. He was ALPHA dammit. It was him vs me. He was so bad my God but he was so strange , SMART AND CUTE. After a year which made his second bday he became much better. He is a routine pup and has to have his way. I suck I guess at trying to be Alpha but he knows. We have an arrangement. He wouldn't be happy anywhere else. I had to give a little as he showed some separation anxiety. I waited too long to fix him as his parts never dropped. Got that surgically removed and he was still doing his occasional marking if anyone else came in room. Lol. He's a barker too. Anything that moves. He can see and hear better than anyone or anything on earth I swear. Super Roooooo. His nickname Roo. I love him so much. My Lil pain in the ass. Lol. He is about 6 now or so and now has began the worst shedding season. It's almost cleared up. This winter he will likely be super fluffy. I wake up with fur in KY beard and mouth so I shave. Lol. He can catch and fetch too but he rather catch it and return 4 times and it is his. Lol. Anyway. I love dogs. He and I are inseparable..."Or else" (Roo) lol❤

Poms are also so unique but, they are smart, loyal, loving,stubburn and the best buddy you can ask for. My Murphy does not leave my side and when I am not here he looks out the window for me. My boys had issues off and on with the marking behavior. Getting them neutered did help, we also did it later than normal. The boys are more cuddly than my girls. Moxie the smallest and youngest is the brat. She gets away with bad behavior since she is so cute. She is hard to get mad at. You scold her and she slinks over looking so guilty. She is so sassy. @allaboutpoms Жыл бұрын
You honestly can't go wrong with either. The are all amazing! How old is he? If he is under a year old his coat will go through many changes before he reaches his adult coat. Really young puppies only have a single coat of fur by the time they are a year old they start to grow in the adult coat and lose the baby fur. Most Poms look odd during this time. If your guy is older than a year old it could be that his undercoat is less dense than other dogs. My dogs Murphys coat is like this. His coat isn't nearly as dense and fluffy as our other two dogs. The good thing is his coat doesn't get matted as easily. Go for the one that you are most drawn to. You wont regret it.
@marylandsworld3428 Жыл бұрын
@@allaboutpoms I got him!! I definitely do NOT regret it. He’s been so amazing, no accidents in the house he’s 3mnths old, he’s learning so fast. The first day he didn’t use the bathroom or eat or play the whole day... finally after 12hrs he peed n pooped outside and then slept during the night slowly he’s been playing more and more we have gotten a ton of toys and he plays with them all lol so the poms need a variety is right. Then being more intelligent is apparent. He is the best puppy ever. The reason I believe he’s a papillon Pom mix is because his ears are pretty big and stick up, he also is less dense in the fur department, also his nose is pointed a bit... however his mother has a more Fox like face, and her ears are not found but they are also not as prominent(plus the breeder breeds both breeds). Anyway, good luck with your babies and thanks for helping me guys, totally see why ppl have multiple. They were too intimidating for us at first but it’s wonderful!

If you neuter your males at such a young age, I expect them to never fully mature... in my experience over decades of all sorts of dogs, owned and just observed, it is important to let the dog 's brain mature before neutering him. Unwanted behaviour must be kept in check, of course, which can be done with training, but the males I have known that were neutered too early remained child-minded for their whole lives so one can never fully depend on the, to do the right thing. Any other experiences, please?
@allaboutpoms7 ай бұрын
I've only had un-neutered males or have waited a while to neuter them. The two boys I have now weren't neutered until at least almost two years of age. We only did it because they were started to mark around the inside of the house. One would do it and then the other would cover it up. This behavior did stop after they were neutered. I'm not sure about their maturity when it comes to their minds. I would love to hear others experiences too.

male poms are a bit clingier, want attention 24/7, female poms come with an attitude, please don't forget throwback and partial throwback Poms, the partial throwbacks will weigh 8-13 lbs, any over 14 lbs are throwbacks, which is the size they were before Queen Victoria downsized them after 1890, the throwbacks come in the same batch as the toys,, my sweet 14 lb black & tan boy was twice the size as his sisters. i got him for free because person that adopted him thought he was a mutt, he ended up out living all his sisters by 4 years, living to 15.

Yes, this is exactly what we have experienced. Our boys are super clingy and cuddly. Our ladies have attitude, especially Moxie. She is super sassy. Willow is the enforcer when there is something "questionable" going on. Besides that she is actually very quiet and sweet. Very independent though. My boys are on the bigger side. The are 8-10 lbs. Murphys parents were never intended to be a breeding match but, dad jumped a fence and the rest is history. I hope my crew lives to 15 years. These dogs are the best. Thank you for sharing.

Oh wow! I wonder how big or small the litter mates are and other dogs within the bloodlines? Both my boys are on the bigger side at around 10lbs each. Thanks for sharing!

"In the wild, it’s the females that rule the packs. Females determine the pecking order, keep the peace and provide for the pack. This natural behavior does extend into our domesticated dogs." I was referring to wild wolves which are the ancestors of our current domesticated dogs.

Btwn 4-6 months of age is WAYYYYYYYYY too young to neuter out spay a dog! First of all, you are removing the factor that cuts off their growth when you fix them that young, so a dog that is fixed before it's fully grown will grow taller and bigger than it would have if you had waited until he was over 1 year old and fully grown! And I don't know ANYONE who wants a Pom that is bigger! There is literally no reason to neuter your dog when they are that little!!!! 🤬🤬🤬

When and if to neuter or spay your dog can be a controversial topic and a personal decision. As always, I would advise anyone to speak it their vet before making any serious and life impacting decisions when it comes to their pets.
