Actually, it's just later generic European folklore. Iron being a weakness to mythical beings wasn't contrived until after Christianity became dominant; namely given "fairies" and "fey folk" were often the result of superstitions following the dominance of religious institutions, culturally the pagan gods had been reduced to small beings who played tricks; i.e. fairies. In many pre-Christian faiths, mythical beings were actually impervious to iron (and fire), which is part of what made them so fearsome. It generally required a "brave hero" figure to use pure brawn, since weapons were ineffective. There are also tales of mythical beings creating weapons and armor, which they couldn't do if iron was harmful to them. So if Maleficent is supposed to be an actual mythical being, iron would have no effect on her, namely weapons. But I guess Disney didn't wanna go pissing off their Christian demographic by depicting the king as an uber Christian man who had weapons deliberately consecrated to hurt fairies.
@ShirotoraGodsbane5 жыл бұрын
@@mallios13 The idea that fairies are allergic to iron predates Christianity in northern Europe. Most likely it comes from the Brits still using bronze weapons when the first iron wielding invaders came. In folklore, it was the gods that cursed the fae with several things that really just made their lives miserable. The allergy to iron was because most tools were made of iron or had iron parts.

In Maleficent, Aurora explicitly says (in the closing narration) that she was the one called Sleeping Beauty, but there's no reason why she would have gained that name in that setting. It's like making Chris Pine's Kirk the Federation's most senior captain in the Star Trek reboot - it's something that's only done because something similar happened in the original: of course juvenile delinquent Kirk should get given a starship called Enterprise - the original Kirk when 15-20 years older earned his way into being the youngest ever starship captain and was given one of a dozen front-line starships that was called Enterprise (and not even the best in the class). @@dezsong5457 - Maybe justification in Maleficent's demented mind, but no sane person would find deliberately attacking an innocent baby justified for revenge against someone else. The movie Maleficent also had some serious plot holes, among other problems.
