First off WALES is not in England. Got it! Moving on. This episode is 21 years in the making. I first visited the main locations in 2002 and have been back several times since then. Back in 2009 my good friend Paul Davis was working on the documentary Beware the Moon and had asked me to do an HHG episode as a bonus feature for the DVD release. Unfortunately the timing was bad and it being overseas was a massive project I couldn't get together on short notice. Instead he incorporated several of the actual locations into his documentary. All these years later we finally get together and do a proper dedicated location video for An American Werewolf In London and he joins me for the bulk of it. This one was a monster (pun intended) of an episode to put together. I hope you enjoy it!

Yes. There was so much talk and hype about it at the time. When I saw it first I was scared and shocked. A few years later I started to feel a bit let down about it and short changed. I was a bit older and less scared by tv and film then. They seemed to put so much into the transformation and it was incredible for the time. Then you never see much of the wolf afterwards. And the attacks are always cut away from, and less is shown than what you would expect of the film and subject matter and certainly compared to horror films today. So I started to think it felt a bit of a let down towards the second half, never living up to or topping that transformation scene from that part of the film onwards. The ending as well, always seems a bit abrupt. Its a great film with loads of atmosphere and scares and jumps and an utter classic and for good reason. But it always left me wanting to see more, and some more wolf action....limits of the budget and technology of the time I suppose.....
@sihop9220
@sihop9220 Жыл бұрын
@@Simon-xc5oy Precisely those things that you feel were its short falls were what made it great. The transformation scene has never been equaled imo because modern ones are fake looking cgi animations that are totally unconvincing, or like in the movies that followed AWIL they show too much of the wolf costume giving an aura of fake. The key is to show little bits and let the imagination fill in the gaps which the movie achieved perfectly which mirrored the same techniques used in Alien to make that monster so convincing.
@Simon-xc5oy
@Simon-xc5oy Жыл бұрын
Yes, true. I suppose I was and am greedy. I wanted to see a bit more of the wolf and the film to run a bit longer. The transformation scene is great. But most of the deaths etc after that are cut short or censored. Like the tube train one, its a great build up, you see the wolf for a few seconds then its from his camera viewpoint to the end. I sort of expected more blood or horror and I am not that much of a horror fan. It just often seems like they concentrate too much on some gore like the zombies and stabbing of Jenny's Nurse, then skip over other bits that you would expect to see. Sort of like Alien where you seen nothing much till the end, or Jaws where you dont see the shark much till the end. What does annoy me is the abrupt ending. I expected the wolf to get away from the Piccadilly incident with ease, then everyone to spend more time hunting him down, with a confrontation between him the Doctor and Jenny when he is still in human form, before more carnage. It just seems to end very fast like an axe blow. But that is just me, being greedy as I say and wanting more. Its a classic film and head and shoulders over anything they make today...

This was a great video and I enjoyed it. Here’s an education from a Scandinavian girl for those that don’t know. Wales is in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom comprises of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so saying that Wales is in England is technically wrong, but I know what he’s getting at. That aside, it’s great to see the filming locations, I appreciate the video and I enjoyed it and I guess that’s all that really matters. Well done!

I'm thrilled! I wasn't expecting this video. "An American Werewolf in London" is my all-time favorite horror film, and it's the first one I watched with my dad when I was little. This movie holds significant meaning in my life because it brings back wonderful memories and happens to be my dad's favorite too. I still recall the first time I watched it on DVD at home with him, and I'll never forget the terror I felt during the transformation scene from David to the werewolf. That's when my passion for horror cinema began. Even now, it gives me chills when I watch it. "Bad Moon Rising," one of the movie's musical tracks, became our special song. My dad is a huge fan of Creedence (another reason to love the film), and together we'd listen to that song repeatedly, creating delightful moments. I'm currently 24 years old, and I dream of visiting the filming locations someday with my dad. It's a dream I truly want to fulfill with him. Greetings from Mexico! 🇲🇽 and thanks for the awesome content on your channel! ❤️

What is shocking to me is as an Englishman and living in England just how much London has changed over the years. From my era growing up watching Doctor Who, Blue Peter, The Goodies etc there are a number of things that jump out at you straight away. When watching an old show or film from the 50s / 60s and 70s compared to London of 2023. The first is the amount of litter. There used to be very little, but all the fast food changed that. The second is the amount of people. Far too many people and over crowded now. The third is the amount of tourists, it never used to be such a big thing. And the last is the loss and erosion of the British identity. In that decades ago there were more red phone boxes, post boxes, royal coats of arms, British companies like the GPO (General Post Office) and Ever Ready Batteries etc and British made cars. Now every business is foreign owned, every car is an import or foreign made / owned and its all sold off to private enterprise / big businesses and just how many of those names have either gone entirely or changed beyond belief. The shots of Piccadilly Circus with the Sanyo signs and SKOL Lager back before Beer advertising was banned too....
@sergeantbigmac
@sergeantbigmac Жыл бұрын
@@Simon-xc5oy Since youre British and seemed to live through this era I have to ask; were there seriously porno theaters (and advertising for their films) just hanging right out on busy public streets? You can see the posters in the tube chase scene too. Im not prudish about that stuff at all, but those scenes have always been a culture shock for me as an American. If it was real there wasnt a worry about children seeing it or just incredibly progressive about it? Pornos and titties etc on display right there in a public square. The late 70s/early 80s mustve been a pretty wild time.

Yes I remember the first time it was shown on British tv. The announcer actually sounded scared himself when he was introducing it as the next program. It was on late at night but not that late and I had just got my first portable tv in my room so I could watch what I wanted, without my parents wanting to watch their "boring" stuff. I was terrified. Looking back on it now, by todays standards its very tame, and did not show much, constantly cutting away or jumping to something else. The bits that upset me most, and haunted me for months after was the dreams and nightmares he has. Normal stuff like being back at home, then horrible things happen. And he wakes up and it seems normal and you relax, then up pops another monster and he is still dreaming.....It was an old trick but I had never seen it done before. The other thing about it was it was the first time I ever saw a sex scene in a film and a couple...coupling....so it was pretty memorable....

Your early "old school" video that you shot in London all those years ago is, in itself, a time capsule of another era. Best KZbin video I've seen in ages. I love the effort you both put in. Seeing the original locations (love the village with The Slaughtered Lamb) and hearing about the work that went into the movie was eye-opening. When I first saw it at the pictures in 1982 it blew me away. I remember I nearly didn't go as the newspaper advert (no internet of course) read 'the funniest horror movie you'll ever see' (or along those lines), and I wanted horror only! Landis pulled it off so well though. It was unique. It received the first ever Oscar for makeup. Even the end credits rolling (accompanied by the fast version of Blue Moon) were different - "Any resemblance to persons living, dead or undead is purely co-incidental" to paraphrase. Seems like yesterday. Thanks for taking me back 40 years. Subscribed.

Great reconstruction at the actual locations. So nice that you've taken the time to get the correct angles and positions to recreate your footage. Interesting to note that in the 1981 film, both escalators were going up but when you went up the left one, the right one was coming down!

It all felt British to this dumb American. The important part is that I’m standing in the right place. I can live with getting a name wrong.

Wales IS British. But it's NOT part of England. Why is this so hard to understand? And you are making videos to share with people, so maybe getting the locations right is important. You think??

@@aranbuzzas8000 Well said. Getting a name wrong is one thing. But getting an entire country wrong? Wales is actually a country with its own flag. Of course, it's part of the United Kingdom, but confusing Wales & England would be like confusing United States & Canada.

This was excellent and so well done. I always thought that it was filmed in part in Yorkshire! By the way Wales is Wales. Please don’t take that as a criticism. My children have never forgotten how I allowed Them to see this film, traumatised forever! The locations were so interesting and informative. My claim to fame unfortunately Was going to a male strip club with the girls And undoing the boot zip of the stripper After he asked, undo me zip love! He was the one in the picture house that Jack was in. Best wishes from England, really enjoyed this.

Hes lucky some mad taff dint hear him say "Wales England" or he would never have got out alive. I think the signage is a clue it has 2 different languages he he, easy mistake for an American to make tho, they notoriously bad at geography.

Thanks for taking the time to show all the locations. what a cracking film. just a bit more info in case you didn’t know. in the bus stop scene the guy to the right of david is dennis frazer mbe. he was the chief grip on the film and is regarded as one of the best grips in the world. when clint eastward comes over to the uk he normally stays with dennis. i worked as an apprentice in the late 80s at his firm called grip house. there’s not much he doesn’t know about dolly/ crane work…
