My mom never liked geek stuff until Marvel movies. She grew up poor in a poor city in Brazil, and to this day my family lives paycheck to paycheck, so going to the cinema requires planning but we make an effort to watch the marvel movies. Now I know the disney/marvel model brings a lot of problems (specially for national movies) but it also brings joy to this special woman and helps me connect with her. That is why I get a little bothered when directors seem ti ignore this aspect to look down on the MCU

Marvel films are incredibly dominant and that’s not changing anytime soon and certainly not cause some filmmakers make (extremely legitimate) criticisms of them. I’m sure those filmmakers have considered the fact that ‘people enjoy them’. That fact absolutely does not mean their criticisms are somehow wrong or limited. These movies are absolutely everywhere, all the time, they dominate the industry to an absurd degree, billions upon billions of dollars are pumped into them. must they also be universally adored, including by people who have spent decades working in the medium and have every right to ‘look down’ on them, for you to be content?

I really didn't like Tobey McGuire as Spider-Man, like, at all. I thought the stories were great, but the lead actors were just not right for me. Funnily enough, I quite liked whatsherface (I'm drawing a blank) until the Raimi Spider-Man movies. And then I didn't in or after the Raimi Spider-Man movies.

I think it’s a losing battle whenever interviews force directors to have an opinion on the marvel movies. You ask a director not known for making general audience crowd pleasers how they feel about movies made for the widest audience possible there’s no good way to answer it. Just leave them alone so weirdos can stop getting mad at directors with movies they’ve never watched
@milliondollarmistake
@milliondollarmistake 2 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying but 1) these directors rarely just say "oh I'm not a fan". Usually they dismiss the movies as something for children or whatever. A lot of people asked that often take a pretentious sounding stance on the matter rather than simply stating it's not for them so of course people are gonna say "wow Scorsese sounds like a dick". And 2) the MCU has been the biggest thing in Hollywood for over a decade at this point so it makes sense to ask others in the industry what their opinions are on it.
@MicoDossun

Your wife don't just want to sort LEGO. She wants CONTAINERS to sort them into. Little drawers. Little boxes. Everything in its place. She wants the satisfaction of seeing all those parts, all those colors sorted. She wants to zone out separating them, visually itemizing her hoard bit by bit. You are denying her dopamine fix. Get her some tackle boxes and various Rubbermaid shit and let her have at it. Keep sets together in Ziplocks with the instructions or sort by color (and like by Wheels and shit) if its already mixed up. Bigger colors like grey and black get bigger boxes and sub-categories. Tackle box with adjustable sections for the purple and turquoise. You have a chance of actually finding a piece you need if you actually decide to build something or rebuild a set that got assimilated. Throwing them all in a bin is like saying "Well, I will NEVER use you again." You'll just end up shuffling them around for ten years and then donating them.

@@ThreadBomb Yea I mean that was one of the main focuses of the show Gotham. And was one of the best things about the show was Robin Lord Taylor performance as Oswald. Cory Smith was also a great Riddler and then Cameron Monaghan was probably the highlight as Jerome/Jeremiah. Honestly though I won't mind it to much as long as it's Colin as I really enjoy him as an actor. But if its not him and they are just casting someone else then I will have very little interest in it.

Don't worry about skipping around Jeremy Parish's Work series, they are all incredibly self contained. The ones specifically dealing with the NES Launch in the US, and the Super Mario 1 and World and 64 videos are amazing. The GameBoy series is a bit daunting and the games tend to be samey, but really just browse his and find videos on games that seem interesting. If you were to watch a series from the beginning, watch NES Works - the leaps in game design and culture over the course of the series is lovingly well documented and captures the moment in game history astonishingly well.

a random theory i have of phoebe waller-bridge's character in IJ5 which idk if i want to be true or not is that she is rene belloq's daughter. When crystal skull came out there was a book about belloq's unnamed child (who is not even gendered in the book) doing stuff behind the scenes and saying they want revenge on indy and are gonna do something after he and marion got married. I am pretty sure they were at least throwing the idea around of belloq's kid showing up (and maybe being a nemesis to mutt) and i wonder if it's possible the character has survived....

DO NOT SORT LEGO BY COLOR. I am a massive lego collector. I've worked at the lego store. I've learned the hard way. It is much easier to pick out an orange piece from other parts of different colors than to pick out a specific shape of piece from the same color. Sort all the colors of the same shape together.

I'm not a big fan of horror flicks either, but when you went into spoilers for Malignant it just completely reminded me of 80s horror series "Basket Case" about the main character having a malignant tumor twin brother that he had removed & he keeps in a basket & that kills people and shit. The malignant shit kills his girlfriend out of jealousy and he literally sews his twin brother back to the side of his stomach, where he was cut from and kind of goes crazy or whatever...IDK. Whenever a director comes out trashing Marvel movies, it's clearly because they feel threatened by them or that their own work is thought lesser because Marvel is doing so well at what Marvel does. That's unfortunate. I live Dennis' movies, and I like Marvel movies. There isn't need for conflict. The multiverse is big enough for both styles. Martin Scorsese on the other hand can stuff it. the idol at the start of raiders is a lady idol i can't believe indy has been doing gender studies all this time. on a more serious note, the indiana jones rumor is absolutely silly and i can't understand how anyone is taking it seriously. i do believe they are gonna make new ij movies at some point but if they did have someone else take over not only would that happen in the 70's but it would be a different character? there is no connection to indy it's not even some kinda jedi situation where he gave the role of some... mystical thing to an another character so they can continue their work it would be the adventures of someone indy thought was cool i guess? It could be possible she is indy's (biological) daughter he wasn't aware of, part of me sorta hopes so to keep the idea of indy having a daughter from the 90's tv series sorta but i don't think she will be in any way the next indy?? my money is on her being the villain tbh I do think it would be cool to have something about indy's impact on younger characters but maybe something through his teaching job and how he has inspired the next generations If they did a short round thing I think going back to 40's or 50's even would be the best bet... They are either gonna do that eventually or recast indy, maybe with cgi to make him look like ford and do more adventures in the 20's and 30's That being said indy coming out as a trans woman and drinking from the other grail would be great and just like my fanfictions

Clearly the next Indiana Jones movie should be a crossover with his grand daughter, Bridget Jones (set in the modern day - Indy hasn't aged much due to drinking from the grail). Wacky hijinks ensue as Indy interrupts one of Bridget's dates to look for the Necronomicon. It's a sure fire hit!

@@johnpotts8308 hey I would watch it. TBH what I want from any new IJ stuff is for it to be interesting. That was the downfall of kingdom of the crystal skull for me. I kinda wish they would have just gone with george lucas's ideas, he wanted to make it much more like the 50's B scifi movies, but Ford and Spielberg were not on board with that and thought it would have been too dumb. (Also IJ as a series specifically is about wallowing in nostalgia but the original trilogy did that for the older serials, IJ4 did it for the indiana jones franchise itself)

The MCU has meaning for everyone. I love it as a story ten years in the making. Disney enjoys how much money it gives them. Other studios aspire to make a multi-million dollar franchise just like it with even less work Critics who applaud it focus on the ten year journey to making vastly popular films, as well as keeping a fresh image. Critics who ridicule it- "to them i say, 'it's fine and it's cool but you're wrong. it's fine that you feel that way, enjoy what you want, but you're wrong.'" agh! James! Get outta here! this is my essay! Anyways, I think the critics are wrong about Marvel being unoriginal. When they topped jumping a submarine in muscle car by jumping the planet in a rocket car, well, I just can't even imagine where we go next on the Fast and/or Furious rollercoaster. Ooooh, maybe they'll jump a submarine planet with a vintage rocket rollercoaster!

How on earth is Malignant cookie cutter? No studio would fund this is Wan hadn't made a billion with Aquaman.

Malignant was weird, but funny and entertaining. Has accidentally to outright pro-choice themes which surprised me.

Saying Marvel movies follow the same formula sounds like saying “all roller coasters follow the same general formula.” Yes, but it’s a proven formula and it’s clearly good/popular. So what’s the deal? He just sounds bitter (or maybe jealous) that these cookie-cutter movies are making all the money. “I make art but they don’t, why are _they_ the more successful ones?”

As with most quotes from a headline, that's not the entire quote. He goes on in that interview to say that its not a bad thing and he's not necessarily against them, he's just saying there's a formula they all follow and he is right. I love his movies but I also love Marvel movies. I understand why he feels that way, he's a very meticulous director and doesn't really do "fun" in his movies lol.

Directors that talk down on other movies always come across as very pretentious. They seem very full of them selves.
