You did nail it with the whole “no more monsters, no more slashers, no more aliens, no more actual characters for Horror movies” it really did feel like we went through an entire decade of nothing but paranormal ghost movies to the point where it was just, “is this all we have now?”

Tbh Hereditary was technically unique, and imo a movie doesn't need to be original. In this day and age it's very hard to do so, so it's a great challenge to make something unique out of existing ideas. On my top 3 horror movies Hereditary is number 2 so it's powerful.

Something....new? I can give you a couple of close reference for each scene or detail, but I'm sure it has already been done. The movie was somewhat entertaining but saying it was new shows a serious knowledge of "classics" (which doesn't require taste for old or pedantic stuff). Please go dig IMDB cross referencing of similar movies going back in time and have a blast looking for stuff and watching them. I mean...just watch this video.

I think you forget, Cordery, that the classic horror movies that we all love were rejected by the major public when they first released. So complaining that the mainstream horror movies suck and people are rejecting the good ones, is not exactly valid when er... yeah. That's what happened to most of the original horror movies too. So there's no real point declaring it the death of horror when this is pretty much status quo for the genre where it matters. Time is the best critic 🤷‍

25:50 you're also forgetting another very important genre of horror: Lovecraftian Horror. Movies like Annihilation, The Thing, The void are great examples of this ( even though no movie managed to use both halves of that type of horror to the fullest and hit the ending with a nice little bow. ) The only piece of media that did this was Bloodborne tbh that's a huge feat. Also, slither was a "lovecraftian" movie that fits the same genre as Malignant, also very fun and cool movie

@@jordanpeakofficial it was decent indeed, but unfortunately it failed to capture the tension and pressure that the buildup to the climax was supposed to bring... One Halloween I printed out a bunch of tiny Babdooks and put them in various windows as decorations and created a Babadook mask that I put on a dummy next to the door. After trick or treating with my kids, while they were going through their haul, I quietly left the room put on the mask and hoodie that was on the dummy, crept back, and then jumped into the room with a loud "arrr!" They jumped up screaming, ran to the bathroom and locked themselves in.

I had a blast, especially towards the end. Even though I kinda knew what the twist was, at the same I'm like Nah, there's no way it's going in that direction....oh....hahaha. All right, let's have some fun. So I guess James Wan was busy watching some Frank Henenlotter films. It reminds you of the Dark Half as well. Yeah, the characters weren't the greatest, I guess Leigh Whannell should have worked on the script instead. Still, it was nice to see James Wan going towards the Raimi horror style and taking risks. And I get it, it's not for everyone especially if you're looking for another Conjuring type film. And some people hate the Evil Dead films as well, I have shown them to some horror fans who love conjuring and paranormal activity films....they thought the Evil Dead trilogy was garbage. I guess, they never heard of horror comedies, oh well.

I really enjoyed it, it made me think a lot about it afterwards, and I'm really looking forward to getting it on DVD / Blu Ray when it releases. I loved Malignant start to finish! I've watched it twice now and I'll watch it again, happily! When I watched it the 2nd time with my roommates, they mentioned the acting, and said they didn't like how Sexy Asian Cop played everything with such a straight face. I thought it was such a weird take, and pointed out that he spends most of the movie looking EXTREMELY CONCERNED. Also, speaking purely as someone from Seattle, it was really nice to see some of my hometown represented as the "sunny and colorful suburban edge of town that mashes seamlessly with a shiny, high-tech downtown" it really is, instead of "everything is depressing and blue-stained with wet air" that some people mistake it for. The Underground Tour is a real place/thing to do in Pike Place Market and it's a fun and informative time sink. ALSO also! Washington state really DOES have a gothic castle hospital, it's called Pacific Medical in Beacon Hill. I can actually physically confirm that it is terrifying to see it rising out of the mountain from down in your car on the freeway. It's HUGE! And it looks haunted as fuck! I'm gonna go to Rotten Tomatoes and give this movie full marks!

Honestly tho, I do think we're actually seeing the beginning of a better era of horror. They may not be mind bendingly original, but movies like Hereditary, Midsommar, The Night House and The Lodge are actually being appreciated and we're at least starting to see the generic copy and paste pg-13 haunted house movies fade out to give way to some genuinely well made and effective horror movies. The jump scare ones are always gonna be around now, but I think general audiences have gotten tired of those as well and though they may not have been ready for malignant, I think we're getting there slowly but surely.

I like the violence, look, and goofy tone of the movie and it’s more unique than most movies that released this year, but in terms of an actual plot and characters, it’s kinda bad. Now I love campy horror films. Films like Braindead and Slither are some of my all-time favorite, but I feel like those movies have a more interesting cast and bizarre stories. This movie definitely gets crazy, but only around the beginning and at the end. The second act is pretty meh, and while that might be the point, I was sorta going on autopilot when it came to the mystery elements. It also doesn’t help that the characters aren’t really that memorable aside from the main character and her “alter ego.” Overall, had a nice time with it, but I kinda dread this movie suddenly getting like 20 sequels milked out the ass like most other James Wan movies.

(2020) Bloody Hell had me rolling and grossed out in equal measure. (2015) Hell House LLC was pretty creepy for a found footage. For the big screen, I'd recommend the reimagined (2018) Suspiria . I have a place in my heart for Argento's version, but it's more for it being a visually stunning piece. The later one had a far more interesting story and the gore was amazing.

S1 e1 of ash vs the evil dead has a deadite with her head twisted 180 degrees. The deadite then moves and fights in the exact same manner as Malignant until it gets killed.

We definitely want new and original horror films, and this one had potential, it was unique so I give it that. However, it was poorly written, poorly acted and the camera work and plot points were silly. Overall, it seemed like a parody most of the time and I could never tell if it was being serious or tongue in cheek.
@OccultDemonCassette

@@Jordansparte completely outlandish scenes being played straight and serious is a classic trope of 80s horror, man. The film is a love letter to old-school VHS rental horror fans without any of the modern pretensions, and that was blatantly obvious from the very first ridiculous scene in the hospital.

As someone else who loved having no idea what I was in for and was thoroughly entertained throughout the film. I wholeheartedly agree with pretty much everything in here. It wasn't so bad it's good. It was just enjoyable. Good ol fun. I so much want to see what Wan does next. And somebody PLEASE give him the reigns of a new Power Rangers movie!

Original doesn’t always mean it’s good. And I think Malignant is the perfect example. It also had horrible marketing. It should’ve been marketed as a horror comedy

I think a lot of people loved this movie a little bit more than what I expected was because of the fact that you pointed out, Hollywood is bloated with so many dogshit horror movies currently that this feels like something new and unique, it gives us something to talk about instead of just going "Yeah, good watch" or something. I personally liked it, but I don't deny its flaws. Good video as always man

I was not confused. I had some of the same comments to the characters. However I just watched it and went along. It wasn't bad. I appreciated it was somewhat original. I appreciated it and wish more films would adapt unadapted written material or be original. I'm also sick of jump scares. Now I wonder about him trying again. Also I had the twist spoiled prior to watching because I didn't think that it would be a twist (surprise) and I still was satisfied.

I loved this video and appreciate your perspective on it. I watched it twice, and while this simply isn't a movie for me, I appreciate something different came out. But I feel that's the main way to appreciate this - it's different considering where horror is right now, particularly mainstream horror. This just isn't a good movie in terms of characters or story or acting, so it's doubly sad if something like this turns off even more original horror content from being released, which it probably will.
@Mmmmilo

I couldn’t disagree more. Using “it’s different!” as an excuse for a badly made, terribly written movie is just a cop-out. First of all, it’s NOT different. It’s a slasher flick with a demon possession. The demon part of which, by the way, is inexplicably never explored (why on earth can Gabriel telekinetically destroy lightbulbs and talk through radios?). Shooting everything in wide-angle was half-cool in Aquaman; here it is absolute nonsense. The fight scene in the police station was as boring as it was self-congratulatory. The acting is truly shocking. Not schlock; just horrendous. The dialog is so cringe, I was hiding my face in my hands half the time. Plot threads are completely abandoned for no reason. Plot holes make this movie completely incomprehensible. James Wan made a fantastic mainstream horror movie with the conjuring. And apparently, that got him stuck so far up his own ass that he thought this movie was a good way to burn millions of dollars. Either that or it’s a prank, in which case I congratulate him. Bottom line is that not everything is subjective. Doing a 360 orbiting shot doesn’t make you a good filmmaker.
