I think we Canadians should thank you and your fellow railfans for the great restoration job that has been done to the Dominion of Canada. The last time I saw her was about 20 years ago in one of the back storage sheds at the Canadian Railway Museum (now ExpoRail). She looked pretty sad stored away. Bravo for the great job! 02:35 AM EDT

And we want to thank you in advance for recognising one very important thing: It belongs to us. Not that the Canadians are willing to admit it. Because we'll never get it back in the immediately forseeable future.

I think why Mallards record is recognised worldwide is that it had an accurate official measurement car on the train and 7002 was based on only 2 separate time measurements by two separate observers over a short distance and was much more difficult to verify. Thanks for watching and commenting and making that interesting point.

Nice video Allan, It will be nice to see them on Tuesday this week. When I was out and about yesterday at the Stainmore Preserved railway in Kirkby Stephen I was told it had been renamed from the Great Gathering to the Great Queuing because of the numbers trying to get in. Cheers Jason, yes Hornby were sponsors of the event. I think they could have used a variety of headboards on the different A4s to show the traditional train names that were about in the golden age of steam hauled services. It was disappointing the see the headboards all the same for an event like this and not relevant to the old era.

Mallard is, And always will be, the very first steam locomotive to go 126mph on the slight downward grade of Stoke Bank on 3rd July 1938. She broke the record and has held on to it since. She is the fastest steam train in the world and will always be whether you like it or not!

It was a magnificent do. Was there on the 3rd (afternoon) and 4th (morning) - I was almost in tears. For 40 years I'd dreamed of this, never thinking that it could ever happen. Oh, I realize I am spitting into the wind. Rail enthusiasts at the time debated it at length. Even into the 1970s, British writer Patrick Whitehouse gave credit to the DRG Baltic type. However, people prefer to believe the legend when it suits their purpose. And who will defend a locomotive in Nazi Germany?

Wish people would stop criticizing the headboards & sponsership though, it's the sponsers that make this possible, who paid to get Dwight and Dominion over here???. I would like to take this time to make a couple of very important points: 1. Mallard IS the fastest steam locomotive in the world, not that German thing. The gradient and load doesn't mean shit. 126 MPH is faster than 124. Stop being so butthurt about it. 2. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada rightfully belong here and here alone. They were saved from scrap, yes, and for that we are grateful, but what we're NOT grateful for is their refusal to give them back permanently, and just shoving them in a shed to rot, or being stared at by bemused Americans. When the Harry Potter people couldn't have Olton Hall, they made do with a remarkably realistic wooden replica, and I'm disappointed the same logic wasn't employed here. Rant over, thank you for listening and I apologise in advance for any offense this causes. Matty :)

WHY MALLARD'S FEAT ISN'T THE SPEED RECORD: The feat was assisted by a considerable downhill grade -- 1 in 50 (0.5%). A grade of that magnitude not only cancels out normal rolling resistance but also provides a positive push. (There is still air resistance to contend with.) Speed records MUST be made on near-level track. The world steam speed record was set in Nazi Germany -- which is why the British and rest of the world want to forget it. 124.1 mph on level track by a streamlined 4-6-4.

Rail record have always and always will be counted on grades, that's the way it always was done, this loco in just one attempt beat the german record and had to slow down quite sharpish due to a temporary 15mph limit it had to content with. It was also hauling 7 coaches when it beat the previous german record, compared to 4 by pulled by the germans.
