A year painting with watercolor I noticed I use certain paint colors and opacity. I also found I like a certain style in my own paintings which I need to develop. This took over a year of playing with paint and finding artists I like to watch that have a unique style. I also read tutorial books of artist who's style I gravitate towards. I am a beginner painter and have not done art since junior high school.

This has made absolute sense and the EASIEST way to understand how to develop my new style. You've also confirmed what I started to do, by pulling what I love from each of my favorite artists. Thank you for sharing!! New subbie!

Thank you so much,! Yes! I love when other artists do this and stop saying "your style will just happen".

Great advice! I have a problem of like contradicting techniques in different artists (for example.. soft blends in some art, and hard lines in others), so it's hard to pinpoint my style. Your suggestions on how to breakdown the artist's work should help! Thank you! Subscribed ❤️

Oh I totally get it! I definitely play with both sometimes and have noticed over time I naturally will gravitate towards using hard over soft. Thank you so much!!

Really great suggestions, Mallery Jane!!!! I am a year into studying abstract acrylic art. You've provided such an organized approach. I am going to try this! It's still interesting to me how the type of abstract art I enjoy the most--energetic, organic brushstrokes--is actually done quite slowly and analytically, as was the case with Joan Mitchell, who is one of the favorites that I will be analyzing with the structure you've shared.

Thank you so much! That is exactly right! I recently have been studying some new artists that I’ve been admiring and have found a lot of new techniques of painting I wasn’t doing before. I think analyzing is a huge part of growing as an artist and I’m so glad you’re already doing it so well!

Great thoughts! I'm just starting out in mixed media and learning some watercolor and acrylic stuff. Where is the best place to study artists, ie KZbin, Insta, TikTok, FB? And when you search for the artists, what are your filters to help narrow down the results? And do you include drawing artists into the study? Thank you, Mallery!

To be honest, I'm still frustrated. I found artists whose styles I like and they are very different. For example I like painting animals and nature, but sometimes I want to paint those animals very exact with watercolor, with almost every single hair showing, and sometimes totally loose with watercolor like the renown hummingbirds and butterflies with all the colorful splatters everywhere, and at other times with lots of paint and colorful with strength in every movement on the canvas with acrylics. I also do abstract with almost everything but oil for mostly recreational purposes. In addition, I want to illustrate some of my children's books. I know exactly which style I am going for here, and it's in watercolor, but still need to practice some more to be good enough I think. So I am practicing every day to become better with watercolor and the composition for children's books. And it really stresses me that I can't find *my* painting style for paintings to sell. I sell the paintings I make, probably I will say in the future that I should have asked for more money. The people in town know me and whenever I present a painting, it's sold within a week, sometimes two. If people I know personally ask me about a painting, I give it to them for free. I know I shouldn't do this. 🙈 But I find it very difficult to ask for payment from people I know and who I make happy with my gifts. Two of my sons are setting up their two internet related businesses right now. One of them will set up an online store for me next year. The other one will sell my printed paintings as merchandise along with his projects. So I am really under pressure to find my own style. 😢
