What I learned is that finding your temperament is incredibly important. If you have no patience, chances are you won’t love to paint detailed realism in oils. If you like things done quick.. maybe abstracts using mostly acrylics topped with oils would work best. I’m finally learning what works for me by learning my temperament.

It's funny you mention that, especially patience. It's odd for me personally, I always think of myself as so incredibly inpatient but I've found myself just so deeply in love with realism and portraits lately and have been doing then in color pencil mostly (the slowest medium ever hahahahha). But I don't know why, it's the only thing I ever don't mind spending hours and hours over weeks on. Anything else, I'm just soo adhd and inpatient I just can't do it if it takes more than 30minutes to finish something nowadays. Hahahaha

@@unboundbytiffany I'm the opposite, I'm usually quite patient but not for art, and I love lots of details... so, I doubt I have many artpieces finished, though many abandoned (usually in a very quarter-done state).

​@@goldenhours7you don't need weeks to finish an oil painting! I work in the Alla Prima style, and all my paintings are done in one sitting (3 to 6 hours). I used to draw w graphite and its waaaaaaaaaay more time intensive! Never again lol! Oils are just so expressive and free 😊 Check Alex Tzavaras of you haven't already. I found my art style at 29. Now 33, still lots more to learn. Just wanna say, don't beat yourselves up if you don't find it as soon as you want. It takes times. Lots of times. Mine was like just had fun with trying all styles I was interested in and see how it goes for like 3 years straight. When I felt like any particular style doesn't fun to do, I can't keep doing it, or made me too anxious, it seems not what I was looking for. But even so, there still are some elements that I can pick and mix and improve what I like to do. Being patient helps me a lot.

Thank you for this. I’m still struggling to stick with a style after years of creating. I just love everything!! It’s so hard to choose. I feel like I’m putting my creativity in a box. I see so many artists paint the same thing over and over again which is awesome! But I can’t do that. Which I feel I should to be successful. To be honest I don’t like the unspoken “rules” of art. I just want to create! Even if it’s not the best avenues to take business wise.. I just want to paint.

You don’t need an art style just draw what you want and if you like something keep adding it. Your own art in itself is an art style.

I’m with you on all your points, and I agree with you. I am laughing at myself because I misheard you say “totalism” as an art style so I was googling while your video was playing because I had never heard of it. And I found some results but they didn’t seem to be what you were talking about, then I realized you were saying “tonalism” lol. I am a retired graphic artist moving into being a fine artist. The lack of direction and deadlines is really difficult to adjust to, so I have been setting assignments for myself just like you were talking about. And emphatically “yes!” on the granular observations and goals.

Another great video Kelsey, I agree with all the steps that you mentioned. I think the one thing that makes it difficult for some to find their style is the pressure to find a style. Often the style sits right in front of your eyes, but you are stressing so much it doesn't come across that obvious. Again great video 10/10.

The master studies have beeen one of the thing that helped me the most when I was learning landscape art, it's such a wonderful tool, and you can choose exactly what you want to study, the shape language, the brush strokes, colors and light, the composition, you name it, you can make a ton of studies just from one piece. Great to see how have you go about in your journey!

I’m not an oil painter (love it, tried it. No patience haha but love to look at it), but your videos help with any art/medium I believe. I have embarked on many styles and mediums over the years. Currently I am about to embark on digital 3D modelling and this is basically the question I need to answer before during and after the year long task I’m undertaking. The question is posed slightly differently: “What is my identity as a creator? How will this show in my work?” So your video came at the exact right time, thank you 😊

Thank you for this video, I started in watercolor because I loved the ethereal beauty of it. The last several months I've done a HUGE shift into impressionistic chunky brushwork, bright bold colors, and have been painting mainly in gouache and matte acrylics. I've been worried about my "style" doing such a huge change, your words give me much to think about and basically I need to just enjoy the process for now. great video and you really isolated all the points in a great way that I tell beginners and students a lot (I'm a concept artist and students/younger beginners often ask about finding style or confuse lack of foundations/skill with "style"). You know, I've been on the same path recently. I like doing abstract art and the thing you said about getting hung up on details and not working efficiently is a thing I've been dealing with. I'm learning that, for me, for abstract art, I really can't go in with too specific an idea. If I do that, I wind up fighting the piece. I need to let stuff just flow more. As always, this was a very good video!

You can totally sell a painting and sell prints of a master study as long as A, the artist has passed away a minimum of 70 years previously and B, you make it VERY clear that it’s not an original Van Gogh or whichever but an homage and a study of their work and signed in your name. Otherwise you risk a misunderstanding and fraud charges since there have been artists who have made fraud copies and claimed they were originals masterpieces of master painters and sold at big ticket prices.
