There's no accounting for taste, but EMPIRE RECORDS sucks. I was in retail in the 90s, and EMPIRE is nowhere near as accurate about that kind of job as HIGH FIDELITY or CLERKS. And I'm surprised you think it's not popular because I see so many people online and IRL who love it, so I figured it was a cult classic.

@@Theomite Empire Records is a great film. Who cares how "accuate" it is? We just reacted to a film where Stan Lee gives emotional relationship advice to random college kids because their friend asked nicely, then casually strolls all over the mall un-accosted l. Empire had a LOT of stars before they were stars. It isn't popular, primarily because it was a sleeper film that many still just have never heard of. His movies do connect, and not just by being set in the same part of Jersey or having Jay and Silent Bob show up. The contestant played by the same actor who played Dante in "Clerks" is called Gil Hicks, which is also Dante's last name, so he's implied to be his brother or at least a close relative. The girl who drowned because T.S. called her fat is the same girl whose funeral Dante and Randall attend in "Clerks," and so on. Characters in his movies tend to know each other or be related in some way, such as one of the main characters in "Chasing Amy" being the sister of Trish, the girl doing the weird sex study, and also of the girl in "Clerks" who hooks up with the guy who claims to be gym trainer and calls Dante fat and out of shape.

Why did I never think about the fact that Earl and Randy are standing side by side and doing this movie together ? Who knew that they (Jason and Ethan) would end up doing the hit TV series “My Name Is Earl” together, 10 years later? Shanelle, you have no idea how deep the history goes with the cast and Kevin Smith. Some of the extras in both this movie and Clerks were on the TV series “Comic Book Men.” Which, by the way, was a great show. To name a few: Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Brian O’Halloran, Mike Zapzic and Scott Mosier, Kevin’s right hand man and producer plays some parts as well. Everybody is invited and there is a long ass history.

And when the credits rolled and I saw I shared the same name as that absolute weenie from the dating show I just about collapsed on the floor laughing😂I do like quite a few of Kevin Smith's movies, but I've only seen them the once, so I'm not a die-hard fan. And so when I'm online, every so often someone will make a Clerks reference that'll go right over my head. They'll shout out "37!" or "I'm not even supposed to be here today!" at me and I'll be dumbfounded at first. But then it'll hit me about a minute later, and it always brings a smile to my face😂 "In a row?!"

Continuity wise this takes place the day before 'Clerks'. Julie Dwyer, the girl who died in the pool was one of Dante's ex-girlfriend's and Dante and Randal go to her wake in 'Clerks' (not we see it.) Randal also mentioned his late Cousin Walter with the implication Randal and Brodie are cousins. Brian O'Halloran who played Dante Hicks in 'Clerks' plays Gil Hicks ('Suitor #3') here, presumably Dante's relative.

Glad to see you go further in this series. Here's a couple of bits I don't think you mentioned after the trivia section. Brian O'Halloran played Gil Hicks, whom they joked in the DVD commentary was Dante's identical cousin. Also, if you ever want to rewatch this, I recommend trying to find the DVD/Blu Ray as the commentary tracks are awesome. This was one of Stan Lee's earliest movie appearances. He would of course become known to the younger generation for appearing in all of the Marvel movies. Of the final scenes that Lee shot before passing was in Captain Marvel. As you noted with his cue cards in this movie, Stan had trouble delivering his few lines. Smith was able to provide audio from unused takes from this movie to clean up the audio. Kevin Smith was dating Joey Adams when this was made. So Silent Bob accidentally seeing Gwen naked so much was more funny. There is another cut of this movie that is about 45 minutes longer and has an entirely new (well, old) opening scene. It didn't test well, so the movie was rewritten and some shots were done late to make a new cut. I look forward to Chasing Amy next. I used to say it was in my top-3 movies of all time, but it has slipped a bit and I'm curious to see how you'll enjoy it.

You liked it! I love it, even though I admit that aspects of it haven't aged too well. The next movie, Chasing Amy, is even worse in that regard. There's honestly not a good guy here, even Brody and TS aren't the best boyfriend material, but at the time, that's what a good guy looked like. Less bad than Affleck's character, who is a real bad guy. He's the Biff Tannen of Mallrats. Brody's kind of like Randall, funny on paper, but if you were friends with them in real life, they'd both be a negative force of chaos. And the end where Brody's being really inappropriate and the crowd loves it so much he gets a late night gig, that part kind of throws me out. I can't suspend my disbelief that much. But even with all that, Kevin Smith is such a good dialogue and story writer that I don't really care. He has a really excellent sense of humor. I just saw Clerks 3 in the theater and there's a rumor of Mallrats 2. I'd watch anything that Kevin wrote, I'm ride or die for that dude.

Joey Lauren Adams started dating Kevin Smith after this film and their break up of sorts was made into Chasing Amy, which he had her play the lead and her character of Gwen will later be mentioned to have had a connection with Alyssa from Chasing Amy 6. No this wasn't based on any comic books, the Producer was friends with Stan Lee and asked him to be in it (Lee's first cameo was in Trial of the Incredible Hulk). 7. The Superman dialogue is what got Smith the writing job for Superman Lives, an unmade Superman sequel based on Death of Superman 8. Susanne does return 9. Seth Green was brought in to audition for Jay as Universal wanted a more professional actor, but even Green said he'd rather have Jason Mewes back and botched his audition making sure Jay kept the role. This is the film owned by Universal so we'll likely never get a complete box set and Smith has wanted to do a sequel called Mallbrats. Some elements do return in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot after he failed to get the sequel made. There's a director's cut that is completely different and actually flows better in my opinion though this is still great.

In Stan Lee's final MCU cameo (Captain Marvel), he's actually on the bus on his way to film his Mallrats cameo, holding the script and practicing his lines. Kevin Smith provided cut audio from Mallrats to use for Stan's voice in Captain Marvel.

I just stumbled across your channel this afternoon on the way to other reactions. I love what you got out of the two Smith films so far, and I just finished watching your Back to the Future trilogy. 5 reactions in and I’d like to share with you: I hope you keep chasing your ambitions. After seeing your love of the BTTF films, and how they touched you, I want to see your heart on the screen. You have obvious knowledge about how this film stuff works, yet still allow yourself to be moved by beautiful things. I think this makes a lovely combination which I want so much for you to share with us through your own creative efforts. Good luck!!!

Get ready for a post Good Will Hunting Matt Damon. Chasing Amy is such a period in time piece now. I genuinely feel like that movie is a piece of the nineties. And I honestly love all of Kevin Smith's work that I've seen. The only films I've missed out were his horror films which I can't tell you why I haven't. That being said I also have a few of his Evenings with Kevin Smith DVDs as well and those are incredible to watch and be entertained by. It's him on the stage being himself, who is this incredibly verbose and charismatic dude from Jersey. He's a credit to the shift in embracing nerd culture as a whole. Counter culture in a weird way too with his very sex positive and marijuana positive inclusions. Can't wait till you get to Dogma!

This is supposed to take place the day before Clerks. The girl who died in the swimming pool doing laps, is the girl who's funeral Dante and Randal went to. In Captain Marvel, Stan Lee is seen reading the script for his part in Mallrats.

Kevin Smith's movies really connected with me, for a large part due to the fact that he displays a world I know, with references that are from my generation with a humour that is mine, even though I grew up in an entirely different country.

I forget how old I was (prolly adolescence), but my best friend back then gave me a birthday gift. It was a collection of Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy, all on VHS. That was my introduction to not just movies, but film. You know, it was during a period in my life where I can distinctly remember my tastes changing, like going from Disney to "grown up" type stuff LOL. Even though we now live in different states, we still have a mutual love for cinema and geek out over what we've seen lately whenever we catch up with each other.

You missed the obvious "I love the smell of Commerce in the morning!" as per Apocalypse Now "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning!" by Killgore Robert Duvall's famous line. I was not aware of Kevin Smith prior to this movie I bought it because it was cheap DVD bargain bin. Now I am hooked and have all his films up to Jay & Silent bob Strike Back, I've seen Red State and Jay & Silent bob Reboot but on rental. Oh, and Clerks 2 on DVD also.

Note about the View Askewniverse: Mallrats takes place the day before Clerks, then Chasing Amy takes place 2 years later (my Criterion edition of Chasing Amy comes with a handy guide including a timeline and a chart of who went to high school together). Note about Silent Bob speaking: there's a pattern in his dialogue, in that he gives good advice during odd-numbered View Askewniverse films, but not-so-useful advice in even-numbered films... I first saw the View Askewniverse films out-of order (Clerks, then Dogma, then Mallrats, then Chasing Amy, then Clerks II, then Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), so for me Mallrats didn't feel like a letdown the way it did for many people who saw his films in order (although it did seem a bit of a "filler" movie compared to weightier films like Dogma or Chasing Amy, which grappled with more substantial themes).

This movie takes place in the same time as Clerks, The girl who dies swimming is the same girl that had the funeral they went to on clerks. Lots of cross characters. more in Chasing Amy. Quints and Brodie, are named after two of the main characters in Jaws. Till this day I still say, "Tell em, Steve Dave!". TS's twin brother was the one in Dazed and confused who was dating Joey Adams' character. At the end Silent Bob is parodying Luke Skywalker in the Wampa cave reaching for the light saber. And when SB spoke at the end, he quoted Yoda. I learn alot from the trivia in IMDB. Yes you have to watch "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back".

I think he tells the story somewhere. You've got to remember that comics were very much a niche thing back then and movies based on comics were virtually non existent. I think the only major studio comic film was Batman Forever that year. The only other comic movie was Tank Girl I think. Marvel nearly went bankrupt not all that long before they had the idea to make their own movies instead of loaning them to other studios for virtually nothing. So Stan Lee was only known to hardcore comic book nerds in 1995. This was still a Kevin Smith film but it gave him a little more exposure. His cameo in Captain Marvel was a nod to Kevin Smith for putting him in Mallrats.

Stan Lee just always wanted to do Movies, so when he was asked through various contacts he went yes. It started a friendship between Kevin Smith and Stan Lee that lasted years, with Stan always asking when he would do another Cameo. The really fun part of the story is, when Stan saw the script his only concern was that he didn't want to give even in a work of fiction the idea that there was a 'One who got away' he was happily married to the great love of his life, so they added the extra scene where Stan reveals he was making it up. (Who even resembled the woman, that before didn't exist except in his head, he had been drawing for years long before he met her)

In Captain Marvel, Stan Lee's Cameo is him with the Mallrats script rehearsing his lines. That made Kevin Smith cry as that made him a part of the MCU.

-Smith tells the story of “Snoochie Boochies” in the 1st An Evening with Kevin Smith. Basically, Jason Mewes said something which evolved into something else which evolved into something else and became. “Snoochie Boochies.” -This story was not the original story. If you watch the scene where Julie is explaining what happened to the girl who was supposed to be there, it was reshot in a warehouse because of it being redone. -I loved how Captain Marvel used this movie for the Stan Lee cameo.

Thank you for continuing to watch Kevin Smiths early work. I know you get people asking/ pushing for movies all the time. But I think you would enjoy Oscar. Most of the movie is like watching who's on first. Sylvester Stallone, Marissa Tomei, Tim Curry and many others. I think it is underrated/forgotten. Truth... I usually just watch others reacting to movies I like, but have come to appreciate your channel. Take care and hope you enjoy whatever movie you watch next.
