I was going through some statements by mall REITs. Lots of optimism based on 70 to 80% returns in foot traffic in some malls. I'm sitting here thinking "If, under normal circumstances a mall lost 20 to 30% of its traffic it would be a disaster...". I think there's a lot of undue optimism right now because people just want to get back to normal, and are willing to ignore a lot of the negatives. Unfortunately I think this is going to lead to a lot of bad decisions being made...
@JHarding974 жыл бұрын
You're 100% correct- and that's a reason that I've been super cautious in buying more/ slimming down existing commercial and mall REITs that I hold in my portfolio. I have however bought a significant amount of Simon Property Group- the reason being that, despite this drop in traffic, they're still priced for the mall-apocalypse ($70 vs their usual $150 region). That and David Simon said they would be only slightly cutting their dividend signifies at least SPG and some other commercial REITs are holding stronger than expected.

With how many retail chains are in (or soon will be in) bankruptcy right now, only the head-in-the-sand crowd can be optimistic about the future of malls (especially the B and C-tier malls). JCPenney is the big one, but many of the storefronts of bankrupt store chains won't EVER reopen, or only do so for liquidation sales for a couple months. After that, it's all falling dominos from there.

We'll my daughter turned 10, so we ventured out this weekend, doning our masks, in hopes of finding her a new bicycle. After checking 3 local big box stores, it was a complete bust. The shelves were literally empty, & the clerks had no idea when they would be getting some in-stock. As for masks, it was 50/50. Some people wore them, while others did not. We played it safe, & kept our distance as best as we could. With the intensity of the heat/sun, there were times, where we lowered the mask to breath, but kept this to minimum, and only when away from others. In the end, we bought a rebuilt bike, from a locally-owned shop. It wasn't what we planned-on, but it was our only choice. Maybe when things settle down, retail will see more normalcy. At least that's the hope. Now back to our bubble of safety.

Before that, you'd just have little slips of paper with the remaining amount of tickets you had, and then you had to make sure not to lose them. Or if they faded or something, then they couldn't use it to access your ticket credits, and that kinda sucked too.

In the England (with one of the highest infection rates in Europe and still high, R number above 1 in some areas), "nonessential" stores and malls were allowed to reopen on Monday, although some stores, especially department stores, have not yet reopened Entertainment venues (all kinds), gyms, Hair/beauty salons/nail bars still closed (target date of July 4 for Hair etc). Restaurants, Pubs closed except for takeaway (May reopen soon for outside dining and very restricted inside). Don't know about mall food courts. Essential stores like supermarkets, bakeries etc., takeaway food, some hardware, some car repair opened throughout. Churches etc. also reopened this week but only for private prayer, not collective services. Because of this and closure of some government offices marriage is very difficult to achieve; restrictions on funerals (including cremations). Slightly higher mask wearing rate, although masks generally mandatory on public transport. Nonessential use of public transport (i.e. not workers, health appointments, essential shopping), especially for longer distances is discouraged. Two of the major mall operators (intu, Hammerson) are struggling financially; not many "dead" malls or retail parks in the UK at the moment (but that may rapidly change, 2-3 of the department store chains are in various difficulties, and even the most solid, the "employee owned" John Lewis chain, is treading carefully). Re the turtle: a couple of years ago, one of the oldest malls in the UK, Brent Cross, celebrated its 40th by temporarily reinstating a climb on "wooden" caterpillar (inside, Brent Cross doesn't really have an outside other than parking, some of which is used periodically for travelling funfair, circus, summertime "city beach" although none of this is currently possible). Brent Cross proposed to get a "housing driven" extension/redevelopment in next few years, will be interesting to see if this happens especially since it would need some of the "anchor" stores to move to new building. There is some very close by "off campus" retail with various stores one of which is a now long defunct Toys R Us (empty building at present), and there was also a Borders (occupied by a chain furniture shop). The devolved governments of Wales, Scotland are taking a little longer to relax restrictions, will be about 2 weeks after UK. And different times/rules also in place for Northern Ireland

I explored my local mall, the Northridge Fashion Center in Northridge, CA the other day. The mall was not too crowded. A number of shoppers wore masks. The mall was a mixed bag. As you said about your local mall, the mall was not dead, but it did not seem alive either. Some stores were open with restrictions such as wearing a mask and the number of people who can patronize the store at a time. Some stores such as Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Body Works were closed temporarily. I saw some empty storefronts. What was once a Sears was boarded up. I could not get in there if I wanted to. I rolled around the parking lot where the shuttered Sears was. The area near there was blocked off with a chain link fence. There must be construction, and I wondered what the mall owners were going to do with that. From watching many of the Dead Mall Videos from you, Ace’s Adventures, Unicomm Productions, and Sal’s Expedition Log, an anchor closing its doors for good does not bode well for a mall. What can a mall owner do with that?

Our mall was 1/2 converted to all medical offices. Heard the rest of the mall may be converted to a convalescent home. I haven’t been to the mall in many, many months.

The malls around here all looked that way at around that time and i got the same feeling you did, kind of like i wasn't allowed to be there, really skyrocketed my already pretty bad social anxiety and i haven't stepped foot in a mall since though i have heard that they're starting to pick up again

As someone who has asthma, I feel that masks hinder my breathing so I try to not wear them unless I absolutely have to(crowded areas, hospitals) so I don’t see people not wearing masks as a negative. As long as there not in a crowd, more power to them!
@erinsabs4 жыл бұрын
Started wearing a mask at work on March 17th, 8-9 hrs daily in office setting, occasionally popping into the warehouse. Every so often I have to break the seal and let some air, but for the most part I just slow down, especially when talking, just go slow. I have asthma as well, 6 meds daily to control it, can easily aggravate it with laughing, yelling, drinking anything cold (ice cream is a hard o for me). I prefer to wear the mask.

Do you think Arizona's High C-Virus Numbers are so high because the Navajo Tribe is included in those numbers? Most of the reservation in in Arizona. The Navajo Nation alone had the highest cases per capita in the US...

They're more effected by it because most of them are unhealthy and I've met a lot of them that drink. It's really sad to see. Plus they test twice here so I'm sure that boosts the numbers. I've only met one person in AZ who's gotten it and he never showed proof of his test so idk why so many people are scared.

@@CaptiveBred This statement is false. I live on the White Mountain Apache Reservation here in AZ, which has a high covid count at the moment, and have alot of friends and family whom are infected and none of them drink and are infact very healthy. We are on lockdown at this very moment. One household can contain up to 12 family members living under one roof. If one person gets sick they infect the whole family. Most have recovered, but it's the elderly that are dying. I also have family and friends infected in Scottsdale. It's all over. Most have mild symptoms, but people just don't care and are visiting friends and family thus spreading the virus.

The big question concerning mall food courts is do you think that you should take you mask off to eat, even if masks aren't required for entry into malls?

I work at a mall in AZ and its just as frustrating as you think it is. This video basically sums up how I feel seeing majority of people not wearing masks before it was mandatory. Now it makes me even more upset seeing people STILL not wear masks in the mall. Although it is a smaller number and less people in general are there, but it only takes one maskless person to cough or sneeze then it spreads. On top of that, half of the people I help don't even wear their masks properly. Makes me hate the general public. Anyways, I just wanted to vent. Great video, I finally subbed after lurking for a while.

The malls near me are re-opening in a very similar capacity to this one. Sea Life is opening with limited hours and Legoland Discovery Center is re-opening the retail section since it would be too dangerous to re-open the play areas yet. The arcade in there isn't open yet either but that's a Round 1 and they're a huge company based out of Japan so I'm not too worried about them, but they show the guidelines they're using on their site, including sneeze guards, increased washing, temp checks for employees and turning off every other coin pusher station.

There are only 3 or 4 open B&BW stores around the Phoenix area and most of them are at outdoor shopping centers. They limit the number of people in store so people are waiting in super long lines in this hot-ass weather and ofc there’s no social distancing 🙃

Texas has reopened. I try to avoid the malls on weekends though. Went once and they are just too busy here on the weekends. On the weekdays especially early in the week they are dead. So for me thats the best time to go very easy to social distance. I will admit at those times I will have a mask on but down as I am not really around anybody.

The fact that people still think that the virus is fake...and people who have gotten sick by it are "paid actors" sickens me. Especially knowing people that have lost loved ones to the virus.. And seeing so many people in stores/malls not wearing masks or keeping social distance when businesses strongly suggest these things...is it any wonder the country is experiencing a resurgence of the virus?

Odds are pretty good if there isn't a temporary closure notice on a storefront it's already a goner. There's so many retail "dominoes" that are going to fall over the next 12 to 24 months - the loss of a JCPenney alone is going to doom many malls! Add in the other chains that are, or soon will be, bankrupt and there will be a breathtaking amount of vacant retail space soon! P.S. If you still want to do a video on JCPenney's bankruptcy your best bet is the Christown Spectrum location - I saw it's one of the 154 stores on the immediate chopping block.

Omg it's so different! I moved to the East coast yrs ago but I worked there after HS as did my then BF. My dad has worked at Fletchers too. My kids just started piano before Corona and now do video chat lessons with him:) I have a pic of that slide- it was awesome! I'm even watching this on my phone that still has a PHX area code that I got from the kiosk near my old job lol! Thx for the videos and trips down memory lane. I live in a moderately sized Southern city and haven't been back to our mall. I had my youngest's birthday party there though so it will kinda be a huge pre-covid touchstone for us. The malls here were so lame compared to AZ but then I realized it wasn't as necessary to escape to a large AC bldg half the year! How's Scotsdale Fashion Square doing? The socio economic contrast there was always insanely fascinating.

Or are the big name retailers so out of money that they can't afford to reopen until they think more people will be shopping in the mall? Why have employees standing around doing nothing or helping only a few people a day?

I visited the Toronto Eaton Centre yesterday and about half the stores remained closed while it looks like 30% might close permanently. Very sad. Thankfully the Lindt Chocolate store had big bags of Easter Chocolate for 90% off which was good.

I work at the biggest mall in the US, Mall of America in Minnesota. Our mall closed on Tuesday March 17,2020. That morning Mall management went to every store to let us know we were closing for 14 days because of the covid lockdown. They gave us a packet with signs that said temporary closed to put on our door and a checklist for things to do before leaving at 5 pm. I think the signs that you are seeing that say Temporary closed is probably handed to them to put up when the lockdown happened. I know some stores are closed temporary a bit longer because they arnt able to accomidate for the Covid requirements from the CDC, WHO, Mall, and company. Like See's Candy. Its towards the end of October and not alot of people are still not wearing masks.

The mall I go to was in trouble before the pandemic. Visiting the other day I saw it was even worse. At least four shops had shut down and cleared out. Great American Cookies shut down its 25-year old space. And the cherry on top: JCPenney was beginning the liquidation of its location. On the plus side, no worries about excessive crowds. There’s not much left to do, so no reason for people to visit.

Okay, I love your channel, I've been subscribed for a long time. One reason is because it's based on a pretty neutral subject matter and nothing you cover is very controversial. Another reason is because it offers a bit of escapism whenever you take us back to the 80's and 90's and how things used to be. In this one video, I really don't appreciate the condescending preaching about wearing masks. You're free to wear a mask if that helps you feel safe and if you think it helps the situation, but other people are also free to believe what they want. People with differing opinions aren't just irresponsible or stupid even if you think your way is obvious. We have, what we believe, are very good reasons not to wear masks. I hope this is just a one time fluke and not a trend with your future content.

If this mall is like my local mall, the decision by many stores not to reopen takes into account profitability as well as safety. You can see how few people are walking around, so a store owner needs to determine if they're likely to make enough sales to justify paying their staff. My brother in law manages a store in a mall and the owners have decided to wait a few weeks because the traffic is so low there right now.

I would probably wait a little longer before I can shop at one of the malls near me. For residents of Arizona, did you hear the news about Metrocenter mall from Pheonix, AZ permanently closing its doors on June 30th 2020? A to Z retail just uploaded a video about it a few hours ago.

My state is starting reopen after a spike of cases. I been two malls in my state. One was so dead. I stayed at the under a hour. Second one I close to where I live was packed with people. I am waiting for my county open on Friday to visit the last three malls. To be honest the mall I currently visited there was one small problem with a few big named stores had a big line around the mall. It is kinda hard for me and friend to walk around the line. And try our best to not get close to them because some of the lines blocked alot the Alie way in the mall. Plus someone was selling mask in the mall as a small store which so convict for people that didn't have one to wear
