I am Maltese and remember my late Grandfather tell us the story of this event. He was one of many Maltese people who were enrolled by the British in the Royal Navy....he saw death many times and suffered a lot during WW2. Our generation neither know what war is nor have seen such suffering....it is a lesson that we should learn and never ever want this to happen again. Blessed be the people who suffered during this war and for their future generations, may the lord give them eternal peace in heaven and help us not to live such abysmal times.

My granddad Eddie Smith was on the Ohio and he is in the documentary. It seems very strange seeing him on TV in his strong Yorkshire accent, especially as he passed away a few years ago. It should be made into a film to celebrate all those brave soles that gave their lives and for those that survived.

Operation Pedestal, getting those vital supplies to Malta was the nail in the coffin for the Axis. They knew that if the '' Ohio '' got through, they were finished, it did, and they were. Although many Navy & Merchant ships were lost with many casualties, I believe this was their finest hour, which makes me so proud to be British.

As an Englishman, I honour Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. of America who built the Ohio. That lady was superb, I'm awfully sorry she got so bashed about and had to be scuttled, her back was broken, but she saved the day along with the others.

In 1977 I met a fellow Englishmen in North Bay, Ontario who had served on HMS Nigeria during Pedestal. His name was Bailey and so he was called Bill. He told me about being torpedoed amongst other stories and I asked him was he scared and he replied " Naaar, I was 19, we had a prayer...please god, get me to port so I can have one last leg over before I die.

After this Event the Maltese people were given the George Cross for such bravery and gallantry....it was on 15th of April 1942.....We endured a lot of suffering and lost many people due to the Stuka bombers. We were the most country bombed in the world per square mile and never lost heart. We must be thankful to the British soldiers and Grandfathers who served heroically although they were outnumbered, outgunned and most of all, low in fuel and ammunition.....

Anyone who likes this, and also likes older movies. should watch the original black and white movie about malta (as in hollywood movie), showing the malta story, during ww2...there are also documentaries about the townspeople. - Beautiful...this shows immense courage in the face of adversity!

Very moving documentary. Very well put together and all the more effective for the understated way in which so many brave men tell their story. My father was on HMS Victorious, one of the three aircraft carriers that escorted the convoy. It was the only one that survived more or less intact. HMS Eagle was sunk and the other carrier was so badly damaged it was sent to the USA for repairs which were barely completed by the end of the war. Its planes landed on the Victorious and were then pushed over board as there was no room for them. HMS Victorious had a direct hit on its flight deck but luckily the bomb failed to explode.

As for the Americans, merchant seaman had more fatalities per capita, than the American Army, Army Air Corps, Navy, Marine, or Coast Guard.

@devontodetroit No. Merchant seamen were not conscripts. They were not part of the military but did interact with them to work out the logistics and security of convoys. In the United States, because their work was critical, they weren't subject to the draft in World War II.

Once a ship was sunk and the merchant seamen went into the lifeboats, their pay stopped that day - how hard was that for them to take.

@@2394Joseph true. When I was 20, I met an American who had served in the merchant marine in WW II and had been sunk 3 times in the Atlantic. He was poorly educated, but he was a true hero after my heart.

My Dad ended the war on Malta. He always had very fond memories of the Maltese people. Took him a very long time, but he got back there before he passed away. Malta, was awarded the George Cross for their courage and fortitude, well deserved in my opinion. I don't think they'd have surrendered. Not the Maltese!

No the Maltese never surrendered, they were one week away from extinction, but she made it. Maltese are known to be tenacious and not quitters.

I am amazed Mr Prune (if I be so forward) that you haven't been knighted or very least made Air Chief Marshall. My Father took my mother to Valletta a few years before he passed. Had 3 ships sunk under him in the convoys to save Malta, and was first officer on "Pedestal but his version of events it delayed his getting own ship till 1943 cause he every time they sent him to Malta he had to find his own way back to Alexandria or Gibraltar...

Why is it that this story is not better known? It's one of the most crucial stories of WW2 and still very few people know of these men's bravery and sacrifice. Why has no one made a feature film of this? I wonder if Mr. Speilberg knows this story?

I remember my father , RMA gunner during the war, telling me of a workman unloading food from convoy ship, stealing a can of corned beef, getting caught and shot for doing that.

Read the autobiography "Destroyer Captain" of Lt Cmd Roger Hill DSO DSC. It is one of the 4 outstanding reads of the war at sea during WWII (the other 3 being "Unbroken" - Alistair Mars, "U-Boat Killer - Doald MacIntyre, and "One of our submarines" - Edward Yound). Roger Hill was captain of the destroyer HMS Ledbury who along with the destroyers HMS Penn, Braham and the minesweeper HMS Rye, found the stricken Ohio. For 2 days, they protected the Ohio from constant air and sea attack to safely deliver her in to Malta Harbour.

My father Capt Tom Symons decd. served in 'Pedestal' ... in fact made three convoys to Malta... best story I heard was of the only plane he ever shot down as Gunnery officer before he got his Masters Ticket was of shooting down an Itie torpedo bomber... to which he swore was flying backwards and that was only reason his gun Hit it.. as he swore his crew and he were incompetent. But he got a gong for it and the crew mentioned in dispatches, but his version was, it was the Itie pilots fault for flying backwards.

I am not going to be as helpful as I would want here - sorry. San Demetrio London is about Convoy HX84 from NS, Canada to the UK and primarily about the trials of the tanker MV San Demetrio and her crew. HX84 was the convoy action where the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Jervis Bay (7x6"/2x3" unarmoured) engaged the pocket battle ship Admiral Scheer and was sunk is mentioned in the film. The subsequent action where the SS Beaverford (1x3"/1x4" unarmoured) engaged the Admiral Scheer (6x11"/8x5.9" armoured) for almost 5 hours before being lost with all souls was not mentioned. Regarding the film of the Malta convoy. I thought Pedestal was a significant part of the Malta Story but reading Wiki I am now not sure and I cannot seem to access the whole film on KZbin to check. However, I am sure there is a film as I remember the bit where they sound the Alert as Ohio makes Grand Harbour.

At 1:21 you can see that a depth charge is being used against a cargo ship . I think this ship must be Japanese because using depth charges set to go off on their most shallow settings was used to great effect in the pacific . This one looks like the “K” rack ship launched variety . Many ships and barges were sunk by depth charges dropped from aircraft, videos often show the ships are attacked from the back at mast height dropping the depth charge just as they clear the ship right in front of it so the ship sails right over the explosion taking advantage of the mining effect and breaking the ships keel therefore sinking it . I only mention this because it is not widely known that ships were destroyed in this manner !
