A little known World War II shelter opened its doors in the small village of Attard, Which is part of the three villages, surprisingly found by mistake some years ago during renovations, of the parish center, Not opened very often I explore the underdepth of many corridors and handdug complex, it must have saved many lives during terrifying days of the war and its a snapshot into the conditions it must have been during the terrifyingtimes of that period in Malta !

"FLORIGERA ROSIS HALO 🌸" - ATTARD's traditional motto in Latin. (🇬🇧 I perfume the air with my blossoms). Such motto, as you said Steve, was because of the number of gardens and citrus orchards in the area. Those narrow streets must have channelled the scent around the village 🌸 🍋 😊. Can't believe the size of that labyrinth of 'communal WW2 shelters" 😲. It shows how affluent & noble the residents were. What an accidental awsome discovery. THANKS STEVE 🚶 🎥 👏 Cheers 👍 🇲🇹 ♥ 🇪🇺 ™

Steve the shelter was dug in 1941 after the Illustrios Blitz, and it was not found by mistake. It had various entrances from the street level and from the restaurant which was a private residence (can now bee seen through a glass flooring) at the time so it was not hidden for hundred years. The last room (dark room) where you passed through the window ends up at the bottom of a well that had an entrance to it from one of the villas at the back. In the last room on the right marked as number 1, there is an engraving on the wall showing 1942. The found by "mistake" is that the entrance to the shelter from the Parish Centre was only accessed too when excavations for the foundations for the hall where dug up. Attard residents knew of the shelter and one entrance at street level is next to the lotto office, and one on the pavement next to the Parish Office. The shelter is open when there are book sales or Bazzars or by appointment.

Good morning. I am currently the curator of the Malta Railway Museum. If was founded in 1985 by my father and exhibit consists of a model of the six main stations together with photos and other railway items. The building houses also a large mechanical crib which is over 55 years old ( done by my grandfather ) together with a series of exhibits depicting the traditional Maltese trades. My father passed away in 2019 and since then i have been doing some restoration on the building itself and the Malta railway exhibition ( which i intend to open for the public later this year. ) Since i still work, time at my disposal is quite restricted that is way it took me so long to reopen the building. I also need to do some restoration to the Crib itself. A small note on the building itself, the original building was constructed in the early 1700 and used to serve as a bakery for several years. Over the time there were four alterations done to the building as it stand today. In the early 1900s, it served as a comunity theatre until 1935 where it was converted to a timber storehouse ( in fact we refer to it as "il-Mahzen" ). The hump on the front wall was added to the building in the second world war as a support since the builing is around 6m high. Regarding that villa with the bridge to the garden, that used to be the house of the late Grand Master of the order of Saint John - Fra Andrew Bertie. He used to live there with his mum and i recall they were very exquisite persons and even when he was elected Grand Master, he remained with his mother and remained humble and friendly as before. Regarding the gardens and fields, housing started to erode its beauty in the early 80s when the government started issuing plots for couples. I was born in 1968 and remember well St. Catherine's Hospital ( now home for the elderly ) isolated from the rest of the village. Also the Red Tower of Lija, could easily be seen just going up the road from the US Embassy residence. I recall Kananea street ( joining the Red Tower with Attard ) used to be a path amongst the fields where only horse carts could pass.

Any stone / masonry can be painted with the right preparation wire brush first then a couple of coats of stabilizing solution helps paint to bond. Then use the weather shield paint system that can be mixed to match up to any colour.
