It is up to us to keep the memory of Steve Goodman alive. at some point those of us that listened to Steve while he was on this earth will be gone and it would be a shame if his talent didn't live on.

And his generosity to local musicians is known far and wide. These things explain why Steve Goodman was not just an entertainer that people liked. He was LOVED. And if you can't write poetry on your feet, Mama don't allow no Goodman imitators.

Looks like the type of jam a Stevie describes in the song “You Better Get it While You Can.” Epic!

I sure loved Stevie...I got to know him the year of 1975, when I was touring with John Prine....we had many a performance together! He and Prine were both managed by one of the greatest guys who ever lived, Al Bunetta!!

I lived in suburban Chicago in 1972 and had the good fortune of hanging out at the Earl of Oldtown. Steve Goodman was a regular as was John Prine. Arlo Guthrie released a song Steve had written. The City of New Orleans became a huge hit and Steve turned into a star himself. It was great. I was at Earls early on a Sunday morning when Prine showed up with a bundle of Chicago Tribune newpapers that he had likely stole from a street corner where they were intended to be picked up by the delivery crew. Prine had obviously been drinking a lot. Prine interrupted Steve's performance as he tore open the bundle and pulled out the entertainment section. On the cover was Steve's photo. The Trib had given Steve an award. Everyone at Earls was clapping and shouting. It was great. That memory will stay with me as long as I live. Steve will be missed by many for much longer.

What a great story. I would hope that the Tribune would have had Steve's photo somewhere when his beloved Cubs won that baseball thingy.

Steve was listed as the inspiration for the Eveready Bunny in his long commercial carreer. But the Bunny couldn't keep up with him. I was at Telluride in 1983, probably the best ambiance for a music festival I ever knew.

Damn he was good!! He could write, he could sing, he could play--boy could he play, he was sweet, he was funny--and IMO, one of the sexiest men on the planet. I saw him live in one or two small venues in Ottawa. I used to drag one of those big old cassette recorders into live concerts--I think I still have a tape of one of those concerts somewhere.

Just stumbled on this - thank you so much for sharing it. For nearly 40 years now I've loved Steve and his music and over all those years have continued to love and listen to the album Jessie's Jig & Other Favorites which over that time has become sort of holy to me; few albums age so well. I was lucky enough to have seen Steve perform at the Bottom Line in NYC before he passed away, for which I will always be thankful. There was no performer like him and he continues to keep me humble when it comes to guitar playing.

Too funny! He happened to know two gracious, or one gracious and one vociferous gentle lady who disallowed live playing of instruments except parlor organ hymns on Sunday, and when he visited there as a young man by Sunday dinner, I am told, you would think he had Parkinson’s or Tourette’s or something, and the friend he was visiting would have to sometimes get him outta there so he could breathe.

What fun.... who is the woman? I know I recognize her and I'm sure it's someone I know but I can't figure out who she is. OK, I scanned down the comments and found out.... she's Estrella Berosini and I didn't know who she is.
