The best decluttering advice I ever heard was "don't feel guilty about decluttering gifts because they have already served their purpose. They were given and the emotions from both parties was felt. If you don't use it or love it that's not a jab to the person who gave it to you. And if they ask about it then give them a wishlist of gifts for the future. Be connected to the person, not what they give you." But if you love the memories something sparks then for sure keep it if you want it. I am horrible at decluttering sentimental items. Even digital pictures! I feel like I'm throwing away memories

With kids' artwork....We have a pretty large family. Every month we, with child, would pick 1-2 pieces, and store in a Rubbermaid bin. End of the year (we do every June end of school year), we go through the year's save work and pick the most special pieces in there from that year to save. Just saving 3-7 pieces a year in a bin is easy to store. When they get older and get their first apartment, like with our 2 oldest, I take a couple that mean a lot to me and they take their bins with them to bring a piece of their childhood. It's a treasure for them. My daughter can't wait to show her own future kids, have them hold hers and do the same projects with them. Don't just do the 'take a picture' thing for all. The memory and what makes it special is the holding the item, feeling the item and even the smell of the paper. It brings them (and us) right back to feeling that moment and is priceless. I have friends who just took pictures of all the work. They all regretted it. Their kids grew up, looked through pictures once and had no use for it. It's not the same to just see a snapshot, & doesn't give the feeling of the memory. Just set up something for each. I let them decorate their bins, which is also fun when they're grown. Going through picking the few to save each time is fun and gets them talking about those memories of the month then year all throughout too, which becomes a nice tradition/memory in itself. ❤️

Food magazines (and books) is why I’ve started going the route of screenshots of recipes, since I usually only like one, maybe two recipes out of a whole pile of them. I upload them to my desktop, and have started making sure there’s a name attached to the file so that it’s easier to look for what I’m looking for. I also love Pinterest and have many boards, broken down by category. I’ve moved a couple of times, and have found that one never truly knows how much stuff (“junk”) one has until moving.

♥️A fun thing my parents did for me and my brother was create a “life book”. It has art work, pictures, Milestones from school to learning how to ride a bike , report cards, and other personal things in it… that way we have these things to look back on. I was a foster child and then adopted so I think it’s something one of our case workers recommended idk lol but I cherish it! I have things from when I was 5 through my high school years all in one big big binder/book. Something to maybe think about doing when going through their art work and school stuff. Of course keeping everything would fill the whole house up 😂 Xoxo ♥️ Praying for you and your family! All the love!

I wish there was something we could do for you to take away your pain. Because you shine so brightly for us. I haven’t lost a sibling…💔 but… I did loose a close cousin a few years back. Every year her mom and sister celebrate her life on her birthday and we (the rest of the family) join them. They say that it never stops hurting, but it really helps having family around. So my prayer for you is that you and your family stay close and lean on one another, to remember the unique amazing soul that is your sister.

Declutter before moving is one of the best feelings !!! Btw, I just saw you are holding a donut baking tray in the intro, and let me tell you a story that I got up extra early last week to get 2 donut baking trays like that from Aldi. They only sell $2.99 in Aldi whereas in some fancy baking shops is $24 for the same tray. And because of COVID, Aldi couldn’t get enough stock,and those donut trays are very popular. So long story short, I got up extra early and got 2. And I still haven’t used them yet haha . Typical me
@brilliantbutblue3 жыл бұрын
Hi Catlady, ld love to know what Country you live in because Aldi and this situation has absolutely nothing to do with "due to covid" you see they advertise a special which they are only required to have one of to push a marketing campaign, you get to the store, the items supposedly "sold out" and you buy a whole bunch of other crap you never went for!!! It's a very very clever marketing tactic but also very devious, they have been doing it for years and at times have been fined considerably (Australia) by our ACCC for "false and misleading" specials. I remember they advertised heavily for a $50 flat screen large TV hundreds of people lined up hours before the store opened and they had only one in each store as a "leader" special, that $50 TV cost them a million dollars for that stunt, short story long l avoid the place like the plague!! Glad you got in early and got your donut pans though win win for you👍
@catladylion51863 жыл бұрын
@@brilliantbutblue hi , I live in Australia too :) I have seen or heard so many people run into the same issues. Which makes feel more and more anxious when I see things I like in Aldi and I often wonder if I could get one on the day or not. Luckily I haven’t had any desires on any special buy this year except these donut pans. I have 4 Aldis within 15 mins drive around my house.

The change.....Oh I feel you sister! My husband always comes home and empties his pockets and has change! Where the heck are you using cash?! Kids artwork = Get some shallow storage bins and make those your "artwork bins" for each child. When you get artwork that you think you may want to keep, you put it in there. Then when it's full and you want to add something new, you take out something that no longer makes the cut. When they are older, they can do the sorting and deciding. And for pieces that are super special, you can do those same storage bins and make "memory bins" for each family member. I'm working my way through that too, but it gives those things a home and a container limit. I absolutely love watching your channel, and I love to watch you declutter!

Thanks for the motivation Kim👍. I'm going to run around the house and see what I can find in 20mins as soon as I have finished drinking my coffee and watching this😊. You need memory boxes.. Then you can have your medals in your box (if you don't want them on display somewhere).. I go through my kids artwork with my kids.. They know everything has to fit in one of their memory boxes.. So they choose their favorite ones. Then I photograph the others they still want a memory of. The rest gets recycled. I put all my old photos and eg concert tickets, cards etc in photo scrap books of my life (until digital cameras came in). I have them in a cupboard in the livingroom and love looking through them alone or with my kids. Since digital I am crap at making photo albums.. That is on the list for next year to do for my kids so the have their childhood in small year books, which I will put in their memory boxes... If things are digital.. You never look at it! Looking at photobooks/albums on a cosy day with a hot drink and music is lovely🤗. Great declutter👏👏... I rip up all of my photos of people (especially my kids). I don't want anyone getting their hands on them in the trash!

Every time I see that gossip table in your videos I've thought "it's so pretty I want a closer look at the detail" finally the day has come lol It really is lovely You should keep your holiday cards for the kids arts and crafts.

This morning I got super motivated 20 minutes into this and have been cleaning all day. 🙌🏻👏🏻💙 which apparently just meant putting up the piles of laundry all over the house (I’m changing out clothes from warm weather to cold, and it’s been chaos), but you know, it’s something! Thanks for being my motivation station, Kimberly!!! 💪🏻

Thank you for this one. It was very motivating and freeing to see you toss things that I would have voted to keep. I really appreciate the kick in the pants

I love the Dr. Teals Foaming baths! I didn't become a "bath person" either until a recent move. My new bathtub is much more appealing for some reason. 10-20 minute bath every 2-3 weeks. The Epsom salt does the body some wonder.

Hey Kim I have an idea for you you know all those drawings that your kids do that you just totally adore but they’re taking up space. What I did was I took pictures of all of them had them printed In a photo book each book with their names on it. Less clutter and you still have the pictures of the drawings and the artwork.

This! I've been taking pictures of my kids art and making pages of just art in my digital scrapbooks as I do one for each year. It is so fun to see how they've grown in their art over time this way, too!

I’m also in the middle of a ruthless decluttering of my house, not moving though, unfortunately, lol love watching you do it too, so I can think in my head Kim would get rid of it!
