Okay using the term pregnant people is the mirror action of calling a tranwoman a person who can get pregnant. It's all based on a psychological condition. In other words hysterical.

@@MamaDoctorJones "Pregnant People" is a political term. There are no biological males capable of pregnancy. Lay off the political correctness that would only apply to about 5% of people who happen to have a mental condition. The other 5% are transmen who as biological women can, based on their sex, get pregnant.

Lmfao Neither pregnant nor people is political. And that term absolutely doesn’t include only trans women you obtuse ornament. If you think pregnant (women/children/trans men/enbys) aren’t people and want to hang out where their identities are ignored, have fun. That won’t happen here no matter how many little baby tantrums you throw with your daily wire talking point as a script.

The "when can you see a babys gender" question was interesting to me. Here in Germany it is illegal to tell the sex of the fetus before week 14 even though it's obviously possible to tell before that. The reason for this law is to try to prevent abortions due to the fetus having the "unwanted" sex. I can't wrap my head around the fact that this law was necessary to introduce but knowing people I'm sadly sure it's a valid concern.

This law was the reason, why I got my blood test results (I was extremely afraid of Trisomy 13 and 18) only in speech at first - it was before the cut off date and I have said I wanted to know the sex. So I only got it in writing a few days later. I’m also disgusted, that such a law is necessary. I would love to live somewhere, where a law like this is not necessary, because all children are appreciated the same.

Same in China, from what I've heard. China is very open to abortions and people get it and talk about it without stigma. However, because a lot of (especially rural and poor) families still prefer boys, they will not tell you the sex of the baby because they don't want to lead to an imbalance.
@ava_lavender
@ava_lavender Жыл бұрын
@@catinabox3048 Not only that, but China had a one-child policy for a while, so people would get abortions to ensure that their one child was a boy. The openness around abortions probably also has to do with that bc people would get an abortion if they couldn't afford to violate the policy.

In the Netherlands I think you can get a paid ultrasound before 14 weeks to determine the baby's gender. But you do not get the gender from the blood test, because of the same reason. They apparently really noticed more abortions because of it. I know in Belgium if you want to know they do inform what the gender is based on the blood test.

@Jellybeansatdusk
@Jellybeansatdusk Жыл бұрын
To be fair, the term “hysterical pregnancy” doesn’t equate to psychosis or loss of touch with reality. The way your particular doctor tried to use it was way off the mark, for sure. And I think it’s so ridiculous how doctors still in this day and age overlook PCOS and endometriosis in particular because they’re so prevalent and yet rarely tested for even when people present the common symptoms. Overall, healthcare needs to do better about listening to women and validating their pain (not to mention women are more likely to underrate their pain while STILL being considered to be overreacting, which is asinine). But for people who think it’s a way to keep women down, no, it’s just the medical terminology. Like “spontaneous abortion”. The words hysterical pregnancy aren’t meant to insinuate anything about you or the state of your mental health, only that your body manifested symptoms of pregnancy when you weren’t pregnant. It’s just what it’s called.

The allergy thing is why I’m an only child. My mom’s pregnancy triggered so many latent allergies that she had to go on an elimination diet while pregnant and weighed less the day I was born than when she first got pregnant. By some miracle I was still 7+lbs and full term (thanks Dr Sadie!). My parents decided it wasn’t worth putting her through that again. Gluten turned out to be the main culprit, and remember in 1980 people weren’t as obsessed with it as they are now. It took years for her system to completely reset.

I guess they do that in case you need general anesthesia. They would not want to complicate things further by having you aspirate vomit into your lungs. That's why they starve you in the ER too.
@Luthien_0
@Luthien_0 Жыл бұрын
@@lapislazarus8899 that is correct, but as mama doctor Jones pointed out, the chance of you needing general anesthesia and then aspirating is low. They only use general anesthesia in the case of emergency c-sections and often times it's not a true emergency (meaning they have time to administer a spinal block or epidural). I personally believe informed choice is extremely important, so one could present the risks and benefits of eating during labor to the pregnant person and allow them to make the choice for themselves.

Furthermore it was late at night, I was alone they would not let me leave the bed because I was on a magnesium drip. They said I would get nauseous and I could throw up. I had been on this drip about 20 hours and never had a problem. I was so starving I couldn't take it and there were no food services and they would not let me order Uber Eats or anything and I didn't have anybody there with me so I made a huge fuss and somebody presented me with a Lean Cuisine. I got 220 calories for several days in labor.
@OnsceneDC
@OnsceneDC Жыл бұрын
@@lapislazarus8899 yes of course. But this is one of the few situations where you as the patient have to work really really hard and calories are required to sustain this effort. Withholding food and drink only creates more stress on the mother and I just don't think is in her or the baby's benefit because it just makes the whole process a hell of a lot harder. But somebody should calculate how many calories you need to labor and give birth. Your body is also going through a lot of changes and has to also repair itself so it is requiring many thousands of calories per day. And in my case I was deprived of food for almost 2 days. That is just not acceptable

I took Lamaze. I would have failed the final exam. My ex tried to tell me how to breathe. I’m fairly certain I turned into a demon as I ground out, “Don’t you DARE tell me how to breathe”. I did get a great piece of advice, a couple actually. 1) there’s no trophy for giving birth without pain meds 2) don’t feel like a failure if you have to have a c-section. That is not your fault, it is for your safety and the safety of your child. (I didn’t have one but I wanted to note it.) and 3) after you have the child, when the child goes through a bad day where they scream uncontrollably and you can’t figure out why, it’s ok to put the baby into their crib or a playpen where they are safe and walk away for a few minutes. It helps prevent shaken baby syndrome. I only had to do it once, but it did help.

I saw a video today specifically from foster mother who gave tips on how to care for babies born with drug addiction. And they mentioned earphones. Aka to be able to attend to the frequently crying babies without driving yourself nuts and suffer sensory overwhelm. I found that a genius idea! It's important to attend to the child, but there's really no need to hear the crying while you're there and can confirm their state visually and through touch! Never getting kids myself, but it's fun information to have to hand out to any peers who struggle or in case I end up helping out in some emergency case by chance! (Just for the sake of 0 misunderstanding for whoever reads this: the advice is NOT to drown out the crying and be negligent and away from child, but to be able to attend and reduce the negative impact on the parent while doing so! Like safety gear for construction workers. Parents have a human under construction! :D)

When my baby turned one I did the math and realized I was in labor for about 68 hours and then had an emergency C-section. I saw my sil literally run and bounce about after a fast unmedicated birth, and I realized it's all dependent on individual bodies ND individual experience.

I know your comment is a couple weeks old but I wanted to say something anyways. I find it interesting and want to share. Did you know that generic testing can be done as early as a 5 day old embryo? This can be done when in vitro fertilization is used to assist with pregnancy. It's more commonly used to determine the chromosomes in the embryo and see if it is normal, abnormal, mosaic, etc. The testing is called PGTA. It costs a lot of money (in my country, Canada) to get it done but when determining if an embryo should be transferred to a patient it can be beneficial. It is also really helpful if either of the partners have abnormal chromosomes themselves or in their family. They do not tell you the sex of the embryo at that stage and you have to wait until after you are pregnant and at the appropriate amount of weeks. It's illegal here to specify the sex at that stage! Thought you might like this info since you seemed interested. :)

Important to note: in a subset of pregnant women with hyperemesis, or severe nausea and/or vomiting with pregnancy, B6 supplementing makes it SO much WORSE. I am one of those people. The days I took B6 either by itself or in the prescription drug Diclegis were some of my worst days and would push my nausea into throwing up days. I'm on an HG support group and while B6 can be very helpful for a lot of expectant mothers, it can make others a lot worse. Because HG wasn't complicated enough to treat...

I did the same, I was really afraid of trisomy 13 and 18 (I think I remember the correct numbers) and I just took the sex as an add on. In Germany doctor’s aren’t allowed to tell you the sex before it’s too late to get a „choice“ abortion (12 weeks I think), but they are allowed to give information about possible abnormalities earlier. When I had an appointment before the „allowed to tell the sex“-time and when my results were already in, I just got an „there is nearly no chance for the trisomies you fear“, but no paperwork or information on the sex. A week later I got the paperwork and the information on the sex.

That’s odd they can’t tell you the sex before 12 weeks especially if you ask. I don’t really understand that, but I guess every country and doctor/hospital are all different. I wouldn’t have been able to wait that long. I got the testing and sex at 10 weeks with a blood test and then they confirmed the sex at the 14 week appointment I believe. I could be wrong since it’s been almost 2 years since I had my baby lol

@@courtneychaos Germany has a rather high immigration rate from countries, where boys are „worth more“ than girls. So there used to be a higher number of abortions just because the parents to be didn’t want a girl. If you have a time limit on „choice abortions“ (is there a better term for „I just don’t want this child, no medical reasons“-abortions in English?) and doctors are not allowed to tell the sex before said limit, abortions because of the sex are out of question (I think the thought behind that was less on the prevent abortions, but on the „equality of sexes“ side, preventing abortions was just an added bonus). Then you only have the „I am not in the right place to have a child“- and medically necessary abortions.

If you aren't, it might indeed be better to play it safe. A quick Google search claims Finnish babies' first time in the sauna is on average at 4,5 months old.

Not a doctor, but a biologist. But this does actually happen in animals, most reported in road kills. If the body is in severe conditions of nearly dieing, it will push out the baby in a very last attempt to save the carrying animal and unborn baby(ies). So the might be born just before the animal dies. Also if the animal is already death the babies in the belly can still survive for a short amount of time, so an emergency C-section can save the babies if they are old enough, even if the carrier is dead. This is often done in endangered species but also in pets.

I worked at a cat shelter for a long time, and a lot of people think they need to give up their cats when they are pregnant. I wish more health care professionals would clarify that this is not necessary. Cleaning the litter box frequently and wearing gloves and washing your hands/arms really well are ways of avoiding toxoplasmosis. Additionally, I would hazard a guess that this is not really an issue for people who keep their cats indoors.

Actually they're just saying if they see an outie, no? Cause some have both. Some have none. So even that is rather wonky. Frankly, I never understood that nonsense. I mean I logically understand that it comes from societal pressures and later from things like "making name anf room decoration decisions" (aka "marketing"). But overall, the obsession of people over sex/gender in people is beyond me. We really need an upgrade where people are people and it doesn't matter much anymore, unless you're obsessed with "wanting to procreate with your & partner's genes only". Other than this and medical field, it really doesn't have to matter at all 👀 It turns out that a manure-ton of problems are based in people caring too much about it and clinging to those superficial boxes. I'd like to fast forward to the point in history where people are just people n most do a good job at balancing internal & external relations.

Apparently, a nerve in that area had moved into the joint as things loosened for my first two births. I also had a placental abruption at 16 weeks. It left me with scar tissue that caused a partially retained placenta. Thanks to the epidural, they were able to clean that out immediately after delivery, but it left me feeling like I'd been hit by a train more than the other births. The scar tissue is still there. Kinda sorta related to the hot tub question, I find the foreign take on hot tubs and saunas during pregnancy weird. In Finland, the official medical advice for that sort of thing is basically "unless you're having a very complicated pregnancy, go with your gut (and maybe don't go in an extremely hot sauna, like 100+ C). Honestly, the lipstick on your teeth is only visible to you! 💋 Pregnant with my first baby in 1986, I had HORRIBLE morning sickness. "Morning" my ash, it was 24/7, never stopped, nothing helped, no relief, no sleep... I lost 22 lbs 7 months into it and had serious concerns about my baby's development. I reported it to my doctor every single visit, but he just waved it off... "Some girls just have a harder time" was his usual response. Then, all of a sudden, he seemed to have noticed how much weight I'd lost and asked if I was still feeling any nausea. I sat on the exam table, stunned and speechless - excuse me, doc, weren't you paying attention all these months?? He casually suggested I try a vitamin B-6 supplement; the drugstore was my first stop on the way home. With the first tab, my nausea was COMPLETELY GONE. As delighted as I was, the fury at my doctor also kicked in; he delivered that baby since I was so close by then, but I never went back to him again.

As a grad student majoring in veterinary parasitology here to add something (and yes we do study zoonotic parasites in humans)! Toxoplasma gondii is mainly the protozoan (parasite) that we are talking about (in terms of species, Toxoplasma is the genre), and it's everywhere as long as domestic cats are everywhere. Toxoplasma is a beast in terms of jargon and trying to explain the super complex yet not-fully-studied life cycle. In terms of human infection, especially infection of infants in utero, mothers only transmit the infection to the developing fetus if infected for the very first time while they are pregnant. If the mon has IgG antibody during her 2nd pregnancy (and beyond), the infant is usually protected from the parasite. If infection occurs during the 1st trimester, the signs are usually the worst and can lead to abortion and hydrocephalus (accumulation of fluid in the brain) of the fetus. If infection occurs during the 2nd trimester, infections tend to cause mental deficits, neuromuscular signs, and blindness (abortion can still occur). If infection occurs during the 3rd trimester, signs are not apparent until the child is older or an adolescent, which may affect mental development and the child may develop blindness later in life (Dr. Jones please correct me if anything was incorrect above). In conclusion, if you have cats, you are pregnant, and you have a husband or boyfriend, ask the man to do the litter box for you (that's one of the smallest things a man can do for you when you are spending all your time and energy and everything to be pregnant and willing to give him a child. It's hard!).

I was eating but it was more small snacks. They did let me have bigger meals earlier in but after a while it was just snacks. I was in labor for 56 hours so they didn’t love the idea of me not eating.

Paused the video, did the quiz and got %73(😒😬😔😟🙁☹️😮😯😲😳😭😱) , ironically I got right answers in almost all medical questions and made mistakes in kinda general questions related to pregnancy even though I've never been been pregnant and I'm not in medical field!😁 @mama doctor Jones you ARE an excellent teacher 👏👏👍👍

Some men can get pregnant, but I guess the quiz is cishetnormative... which I appreciate you pointing out. I also heard that how pregnancy is counted is weird? It's from the time of ovulation, not fertilization? I was wondering why that was... might be a good subject of a video. Who came up with this system and why? It sounds crazy to me that one doesn't estimate pregnancy from fertilization...
@MomtoaFullHouse
@MomtoaFullHouse Жыл бұрын
Pregnancy is counted from the first day of the last period because that is an obvious and mostly consistent point in time. Most people would have a hard time pinpointing ovulation and it is impossible to pinpoint exactly when fertilization happened.
@dianagreene4257
@dianagreene4257 Жыл бұрын
Fertilization happens within 24 hours of ovulation. Pregnancy is counted from 14 days before fertilization when "normal" cycles are starting a period. (I have never had a 28 day cycle in my life, and refused to give the date of my last period when I went in for my first pregnancy appointment)

Great video as always, I love your sense of humor too!! Tbh I didn't even notice the lipstick until you pointed it out! I listen mostly while I'm cleaning and my quality is always around 360p where I'm at, and I'm sure the same is the case for many busy people 😂 you're awesome, keep it up 🖤🖤

I was induced with my second and at the hospital for 15 hours before she was born. The kept me on a liquid diet and I was sooooo hungry. I had an unmedicated birth and felt so weak from being hungry. I should have had my husband smuggle snacks 😒

My neice, who was a national gymnastics competitor when she was a teen, did a handstand on the beam when she was 8 months pregnant. Holy cow, it was the craziest thing to see. She held a nice pose with her legs and she held the handstand for more than 30 seconds.

I didn't notice the lipstick on your teeth! I love your comments and explanation of what a surrogate is vs the person who carries the person(s) genetic baby to term (see? I already forgot what that term is?!). But thanks anyway even for me who has to see info several times before remembering the terms! Okay! I watched video again and the term is "gestational carrier" is current term for a woman who carries a baby for a couple and it is their genetic child, not hers. Got it. What if....the surrogate uses her egg and the sperm donation from one of couple to get pregnant? Is she a surrogate or a gestational carrier in that case?
@MamaDoctorJones
@MamaDoctorJones Жыл бұрын
If there’s any genetic relation to the person who is pregnant and the pregnancy was conceived intentionally for someone else to parent, then surrogate is the term 👍🏼
@laartje24
@laartje24 Жыл бұрын
Think about it like this: It doesn't really matter to the genetic relationship between the carrier and baby if the sperm is from her partner or another man. They will still be 50% genetically related to the baby.
@tinkeramma
@tinkeramma Жыл бұрын
@laartje24 I suspect the biggest concern (legally) is that the surrogate is more biologically related to the baby than the intended parent(s), leaving open potential family rights issues. If the surrogate is one of the intended parents' sibling, they're still biologically related to the baby, but not more so than the intended parents. This becomes additionally concerning if delivery occurs (planned or not) in a place that does not have legal surrogacy.
@tinkeramma
@tinkeramma Жыл бұрын
@Mama Doctor Jones Is this still true when the surrogate is a sibling of an intended parent when the egg and sperm came from the intended parent? I.E. if my sister carried an embryo conceived with my egg and my husband's sperm. She'd be biologically related, but not as related as I am.

I actually thought allergies decrease during pregnancy. The sister of a friend is normally allergic to dogs but wasn’t during both her pregnancies, so I thought it’s normal because an allergy is just a hyperactive immune system that gets toned down so that moms body doesn’t attack the „half foreign“ baby cells.

I had an allergic reaction to our hypoallergenic laundry soap we had switched to a few months before delivery. I think we’d used for a month before I had the reaction. I got itchy splotches all over and had really swollen eyes. Kinda looked like a raccoon, but it was pink. That was the weirdest feeling ever, and it was itchy. As soon as we switched laundry detergent, it was gone. Pre pregnancy, I knew I’d had a reaction to some laundry soap before. I wish I knew what exact ingredient it is that I’m allergic to, but I don’t. It’s only happened a couple of times so far in my life though, and I’ve tried several common different detergents and have had no trouble.

Just to clarify; I'm now 58 years old. So everything I'm telling is decades old . lol .. I've given birth 3 times. 1st son, was born before my diagnosis of Sarcoidosis (aggressive). He was born very premature. Nurses said " your Just Having a miscarriage " . Labor was 6 hours. He lived for 4 hours. 2nd birth, I got very lucky that I had a doctor that knew what Sarcoidosis was. My daughter had difficulties throughout her gestation. Ended up being hospitalized several times and again during the last 30 days. She actually died during the 2nd inducement but came back on her own.2 weeks later( before the 3rd was scheduled) she was born. My doctor had clear instructions on my chart and they were ignored! I ended up without him and the on call doctor had me in labor for 21 hours; pushing for 10 hours!! Then finally did an episiotomy that took nearly 30 minutes to sew me up. But she lived!!❤ 3rd birth; different doctor, different place. (Military hospitals). My 2nd son was born , premature and took a breath then died. The doctor had already written him off as miscarriage. I didn't even get a death certificate.

Congrats on your little one. My advice from experience as a patient who medically struggles with fasting is to be upfront with your OB and ask when the absolute cutoffs pre-surgery are for solids, liquids, and clear liquids. When I had a procedure most recently (non-OB), I was told to ignore the "midnight" standard and given the number of hours from my scheduled procedure for each thing. If birth becomes an urgent or emergent C-section, just make sure to be clear with the anesthesiologist about what and when you most recently ate. They prefer to avoid aspiration risk but because urgent and emergent procedures cannot be scheduled in advanced, they are prepared to manage the risk.
