Fun fact. People used to put onions by points of entry into their homes to try to fight "plague miasma." In some cases it actually worked. Because it deterred rats.

The "suction cup" support in that bathroom was more dangerous than having nothing. The tile had visible depressions in the pattern and they also installed over the grout line. That suction cup would have never supported weight for very long, which would have caused a fall.

.. and even if it works on *flat* tiles as intented (not on grout lines), it could still rip the tiles out when the person using it put a lot of weight. @soniccookie655 Жыл бұрын
@@iwill9131 There are a few things he said that make it seem to me like he didn’t realize it, it’s been a couple weeks now since I saw the video so I don’t remember them all, but in particular putting the bra in the freezer. He just said something like “I guess if you’re too hot, that would work?” whereas it’s specifically for breast pain from pregnancy and breastfeeding. I don’t think it would work all that well, but it’s a semi-viable hack (just using cold cabbage leaves or something like that would work better). He is a doctor, but he’s specifically a general practitioner/family medicine doctor, so he’s very well versed in a variety of medicinal information on stuff like sprains, but probably just has a lot of textbook knowledge on pregnancy, because you would usually discuss all those problems with an OBGYN instead of your family medicine doctor. I’ve noticed Doctor Mike will also occasionally not notice obvious details (while seeing specific information other people wouldn’t), I think it’s an endearing trait though. :’)

@Illiminator31 Жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity, since I didn't know that there is a medical profession called podiatrist, what's the difference between an orthopedist and a podiatrist? And is that an American thing (like MD and DO)?
@avail2114 Жыл бұрын
@@Illiminator31 a podiatrist is a doctor that specializes in care of the feet and ankles where as an orthopedist is a doctor that specializes in the general care of the entire musculoskeletal system. I believe both are categorized as an MD in the United States.
@lindavanina9420 Жыл бұрын
@@avail2114 I'll add to that that an orthopedist "only" focuses on the muskuloskeletal system when they're treating ankle/foot, whereas a podiatrist takes care of the whole "area" ( skin, nails, nerves, vascular etc.). I'm based in Switzerland, so here things are a little bit different: we are not medical doctors (meaning we can't perform surgeries nor prescribe drugs) so we basically take care of nails/skin ailments (such as calluses or ingrown nails, to give easy examples) and we perform gait analysis and other exams in order to treat "gait disorders" (that's a very broad definition). We make cutomised foot orthoses (insoles) ad well.
@avail2114 Жыл бұрын
@@lindavanina9420 wow what kind of certification does that require in Switzerland then? In all my experiences podiatrists and podiactric surgeons in the US are licensed to perform nail avulsions as well as Achilles repairs bunion excisions and plantar fasciitis surgery. The double sock is actually legit for some purposes. When you're hiking/rucking long distances it's great for preventing blisters. If sweating becomes an issue you can either change your inner sock or apply foot powder!
@HappyBeezerStudios Жыл бұрын
But it isn't a solution to wholes in socks. If you have another sock to put over it, why not just use that hole free socks instead. And either throw out the broken one, fix the wholes, or use it as a rag.

@@HappyBeezerStudios it has nothing to do with holes in socks. It's for alleviating blisters.

That spiky ball massage hack is actually physical therapist and podiatrist recommended (at least mine recommended it to me) for plantar fasciitis because it helps roll out the inflamed muscles and stretch the whole plantar fascia. It’s especially helpful in the morning when the muscles are extra tight. You do have to be careful though because hitting sore spots in a non-gentle way can hurt a lot. Be gentle with the pressure at first and apply more as the muscles stretch.

Dr. Mike, my daughter absolutely loves your videos! She’s thinks you’re fabulous and talks about how you’re a doctor like “mommy’s doctors”. I work with DO students. ♥️ I have a question/favor to ask. I know you’ve mentioned in previous videos how you enjoy when some of your patients (usually the younger ones) know you from your social media. Well there are some horror movie trailers that come up on your video ads occasionally that really freak my kiddo out. I didn’t know if you could set or request age appropriate ads, but figured I would at least mention it. Thanks for your wonderful educational videos, and for bringing a light to our FANTASTIC DO physicians!
@justsomeguy1275 Жыл бұрын
The horror ads may be due to search history or other factors, the best way in my opinion is either turn off targeted ads or a trusted ad blocker
@deebee0225 Жыл бұрын
I agree, as someone with anxiety he's made my trust in doctors get so much better. He's a wonderful man. Oh and about the ads, he can't choose what ads get played. I believe when uploading a video KZbin checks the video and sees if it's KZbin appropriate and places random ads after that. Cause with old videos you never see old ads. He if could choose they would stay the same for years and years.
@madison8663 Жыл бұрын
Maybe have bigger internet restrictions because certain ads come from search history, or things that you watch online
@CM09575 Жыл бұрын
Ya, I agree. The scary ads are from what someone is watching. They say Big Brother is always watching. Stuff people search up creates adds. Halloween ads should only be during Halloween.
@KelliOlson79 Жыл бұрын
We’ll I’m not sure how because I don’t watch horror anything, so I don’t know why I would get horror movie ads. Nine times out of 10 when I’m watching KZbin my daughter is in the room or could walk in at any moment so I watch things that would be appropriate for her to see. She may not LIKE it but it wouldn’t be bad, even the one time she isn’t nearby, I don’t watch horror videos of any kind.

I’m a home occupational therapy practitioner (the ones who go into the home and make accessibility/safety recommendations like the grab bar by the toilet). Glad he co-signs, however I’ve gotta say I absolutely HATE those suction- cup bars and wish they weren’t even produced. They fall off at the slightest provocation and in the event of actual loss of balance, counting on something that lets loose can be more dangerous than trying to get up without any equipment at all.
@mehere8038 Жыл бұрын
hmm good point. I use them at a local spa, click them onto the wall, so I can actually stay there, not float off, cause I can't use my legs like others do & they are fantastic for that. There are some other uses I find for them too, for grapping & pulling my wheelchair around, but yeh, I learnt a long time ago, NEVER rely on them in any setting where doing so will result in a fall! I hadn't really thought about standing people using them, REALLY good point though. I do like that they are made, they are useful when used right, but yeh, they probably should have a safety warning or something on them saying they are not suitable for weight bearing. Just their availability probably causes problems with landlords refusing to allow screw in bars too I'm thinking. & btw, I actually like the "dent removers" with just 1 suction cup better for my use, so totally possible to sell them, but as something that doesn't suggest they can be used for weight bearing for vulnerable people, since the ones I buy are from the hardware store for a non-disability purpose anyway ($2.80 for dent remover, $25 for "disability grab rail")
@rtracy1216 Жыл бұрын
All your uses and points are excellent! For what your needs are the ways you use them make total sense. Mostly I see people who have had a change in function due to illness, injury or surgery. I recommend FIXED grab bars for most showers to help in stabilizing during transitioning in-out and for stability if standing (although I usually also recommend a shower chair or transfer bench). When families opt for those ones rather than a fixed bar - because it’s specifically meant for weight bearing - it just drives me nuts.
@rtracy1216 Жыл бұрын
And also yes, as soon as “accessibility”, “disability”, and sometimes “elderly” is tagged onto an item description the price skyrockets. It’s gross and awful.
@DrachenGothik666 Жыл бұрын
It was one like that I saw was the cause of a poor elderly man who was brought into a hospital with a *massive* slash across his back. He'd had it on his bath-tub wall, and it let go as he was either trying to get up or down, and he fell into the door of the tub stall, breaking the glass, shattering it, laying open his poor back into the muscle. Yeah, they suck. They aren't meant to take the weight of a full-grown human.
@TSIRKLAND Жыл бұрын
It can also really depend on the surface. A suction cup relies on a completely smooth, clean, solid, air-tight seal. Glass is best. Very large tiles with a completely flat surface, with a glossy finish is second-best. Any tile with a wavy or bumpy texture, or small tiles with lots of grout lines: will not suction. Whatever kind of wall treatment was on display in that video was definitely NOT suction-cup friendly. Or maybe if you happen to get it to suction *just* enough to hold the weight of the handle itself, any additional weight- such as a person- will break that suction immediately. Suction cups are nice for putting a little stained glass hummingbird in your window, or maybe a toothbrush holder on your mirror. Most phone-holders for cars that rely on suction cups are quite unreliable; maybe they work for a while, then they fall off at the most inopportune moment. I would NOT trust my health to a suction cup, especially if I'm already in a poor health situation where I need the help.

As a twin mom I can confirm: Relaxing on a thing, that makes room for the prego belly is very comfortable. I doubt that one can sleep all night like that, but it is very nice. I think the unicorn part is for comical purposes. And I really dislike 5min craft Plus: As a pregnant woman EVERYONE rubs your belly without asking! EVERYONE! I made it a habit to place my whatever before my belly. Very annoying. And just like that, when you are not paying attention for a sec: A hand on your belly. Because obviously pregnant women aren't human anymore, just public property to incubate new humans And the pants hack is dumb: I was pregnant with twins, like I said, and the pants would have slipped, but I wasn't prepared to buy new pants every week or so... So an elastic band and a belly band it was. It worked just fine And many women experience swollen boobs in pregnancy and after and everything that helps is welcome.

Poor Mike was SO triggered by these “hacks”. I will say that some of them you needed a woman who’s been pregnant to explain it. The lady walking up the stairs was so relatable to me. I had very loose ligaments in pregnancy and lifting my legs was excruciating. Taping my belly or using a brace to help lift some of the weight helped me be able to actually use stairs when I had to. I could see the scarf trick helping if you’d forgotten to wear your belly support brace that day.

The 'use a wet sponge as an ice pack' thing is something I've used before. If you're out camping in the bush, and you need to hold out for actual medical help, wetting a sponge, cloth, or paper towel, and waving it through the air makes it a very temporary cold thing (helps to have two going at once so you can constantly trade them off) and in places where you have limited water, it's a good way to start to cool off burns as you wait for further help.
