True story: I started my first period at a friend’s house (in the 80s!). My friend had her mom help and later the entire family INCLUDING the brother that was 2 years older and popular (die) came into my friend’s room to “welcome me to womanhood”. The embarrassment 😊.

My sex ed in 1995 in Texas ( 13 years old) was just them giving us a care pack of pads and deodorant. I became a mom at 14. I can't believe their sex talk didn't help lol. Teen pregnancy was so prevalent in my smallish town that they had a school just for teen moms that had a daycare in it. I started that school when my baby was 6 weeks old. Edit to add: they also told us about abstinence, even saying we would die if we got pregnant. I was extra terrified when I got pregnant 😢

This was the video I watched in 4th grade. I remember the pancakes. I do remember that once I got my period at 14 a lot of women told me about their first period. My poor grandma had never been told about periods. She got hers at school and snuck out and walked home because she thought she was dying. She was living with her grandparents. Her grandpa was the only one home and had to tell her what was happening. He was really kind to her and explained she wasn't dying and sent her to the store to get what she needed and put it on his tab. The lady at the store showed her what to get and how to use it. This was in the late 1940s. I was so glad I didn't get mine at school.

This sounds horrific! I genuinely don't even remember getting my first period, except a vague memory of my mum explaining that the brown discharge in my knickers meant it was coming soon. Then, my next period memory is discussing them with a friend about a year later. I think it was probably the fact that I actually had proper information from school before I started, so there's no traumatic incident embedded in my memory. Although, I did have some horrific periods later on so maybe they just overshadowed my first one! 😂

I had no sex education in my public school. If I ever asked my mother, she’d tell me to read the Life Cycle Encyclopedia. It was treated as something embarrassing and to not be discussed. It was a totally different story for my daughters. My periods were so awful that I was grateful for menopause.

When the dad said congratulations when the girls walked in I thought he was congratulating her one getting her period like the mom did. I was dying inside for a moment for the girl, lol. I liked how in the end she was excited to tell her mom. I was horrified and did not say anything and bleed everywhere as no one had talked to me about periods in any detail. You mama Doctor Jones are going to be that mom at your child's party if one of their friends gets her period at your house. So glad those guys tracked down your video. It is so funny that some poor soul out there who collects pancakes videos is going to look at that and be mortified, so great!

Plus she might not want him to know. It doesn’t matter if it’s normal, not all people want their business being told to everyone without even asking permission. If I were the mom, I would’ve offered to let her use my phone to call her parents or tell her I’d call them (or text them) if she would rather that instead. And I would most definitely let her tell the people she wanted to tell. I wouldn’t have told her friends even if one was my own daughter, I’d let them have their own convo (like they did in this video), and if I wanted to tell my husband, which is her friends dad, I would’ve said, “Is it okay if I tell Mr. Drexel?” (Or what have you.) Menarche is a complicated time for a child with a lot of hormones fluctuating and emotions, and so much. I would want him to know only if she wanted him to, or I had permission to tell him, seeing as he’s the friend’s dad, and not her own father. Even if things are normal, some people would rather have their business kept private especially concerning something new or possibly sensitive to them, and some people prefer to tell others things themselves- they wouldn’t want people talking on their behalf. It’s better safe than sorry. It’s also just the respectful thing to do, especially when you don’t know if she has past trauma, etc. Not everything needs to be shared with everyone around them/every person in the same house as they are/every soul within a 25mi radius, the second it happens 24/7. Lmao 😂

For the most part I agree with you. There's only one friend's mom I who was open about talking us girls about womanly things. She was an RN at a ob/gyn and would make sure we knew at 13 what not to do to end up pregnant. I didn't even feel comfortable talking to my mom about this stuff. Learned most things from my older sister.

I got my first period days before I was to visit my best friend who moved up north. I almost didn’t go because I was embarrassed and didn’t know how to handle it. Her mom reassured me she would help take care of me and helped me get necessary sanitary products when I ran out (I was with them for about a week and hadn’t packed enough). I’m so thankful for her mom and mine for encouraging me and being there for me during such a vulnerable and big step in my adolescence. If I hadn’t gone on that trip then I would not have been able to make our last life long memories together before she passed.

i started puberty really early (aged 8) and although i'd read up on it and spoken to my mum about it, the whole thing was mortifying to me (and i had a lot of bad experiences surrounding my period at school), took me into my late 20s before i was comfortable discussing it with anyone. once i was staying at my grans house overnight, and got my period, so i'd left a little blood on the sheets, but i was too scared to say anything to her. but obviously she saw it, and she very kindly took me to the bathroom and showed me where she kept her pads, she didn't have period pads, as she was in her 80s, but she had these bigger incontience pads, and she said i was welcome to use them whenever i wanted. this actually turned out to be really useful, because my periods were so heavy, normal pads were basically useless, so my mum would get some of my grans pads, and that made things to much better. but it was so nice of her and she didn't make me feel guilty for dirtying the sheets or anything. my gran was a lovely woman anyway, but this made me love her even more.

Oh my gosh, using an incontinence pad as a menstrual pad, I have a similar thing, but the other way around. My periods are relatively light, but my bladder leaks more when I'm on my period, like I very rarely leak when I'm not on my period, but when I'm on my period, I generally have at least 1 day of bladder leaks. I have legit peed out a full bladder's worth of urine into my menstrual pad before because yes, my bladder leaks sometimes just get that bad on my period. It absorbed it all and I of course changed it right afterwards. So my menstrual pads, which aren't really designed with fast flow in mind, double up as incontinence pads.

Knowing your own body and that it's made for making and carrying children should be enough until you are old enough and have life enough to be doing the deed. Menarche signals that a body is now a maturing body, and one that will be able to soon support life soon, or at that moment (some people have gotten pregnant before their first period, because they just happened to have sex during their first ovulation, where if they hadn’t of had sex, they would’ve had their first period two weeks later.) People mistakenly think you cannot get pregnant until you have already had your first period, due to this outlandish myth. But anyways, the only thing PROVEN to prevent teen pregnancy is to teach where babies come from, teach them about puberty and periods and changes in one’s body during those, teach about male and female sex hormones, teach them about reproductive health, teach them how babies get there (not just that they get there BUT what is needed to occur to create life), teach them about birth control and birth control methods and the efficacy of each one, teach them about safe sex and how to prevent STDs/STIs/pregnancy, tell them where they can go to get free condoms, teach them how to properly use a condom, teach them how to track cycles/periods so they can easily keep track of what’s going on and see an issue when it arises or maybe be able to put two and two together especially if they have other symptoms as well, teach them when they should ultimately go for testing for sexually-transmitted anything and where they can go, teach them about women’s health and cancer screenings and when the first one should be for each unique situation (what age) and all that, oh and that there’s also 3 holes down there (on average at least-barring something congenital, etc) and which hole is for what… many women say they had no idea they had 3 holes til they were an adult! Which is absolutely unacceptable. Do you like misinformation? Do you like teen pregnancies? Are you pro-life or pro-choice?!? If you’re pro-life and think that cut and dry about shit, then you’re an evil person. What, do you wanna withhold info hoping people get pregnant but they cannot abort bc of laws, so then there are babies popping out everywhere instead of proper sexual education being taught?! Because abstinence is a joke. You’ve heard about soaking, which is something within the LDS church and community, right?! That’s the lengths these kids to thru. Smh. Sex is normal. My mother was brought up to think that talking about sex and the bodily systems that are involved was a mortal sin. It made discussions on those issues incredibly stressful for her. I learned about menses from an article in "Young Miss Magazine". It was really interesting and informative. I left my copy of it in the bathroom open to the beginning of the article for my mom to find. She read it and came scurrying up to me, telling me to read it and to come to her with any questions when I was finished. (I wanted to know what a menstrual cup was. They weren't readily available in 1972.) Within a couple of months of having my periods, I declared that menopause couldn't come soon enough for me. My flow was ridiculously heavy, and I had terrible PMS before it started and migraines afterward. Thanks for the video, MDJ! It was a lot of fun! ❤

They actually provided many more tool than you gave them credit for. They demonstrated how to broach the conversation with an adult who isn’t your parent, with friends and with a parent. These are often conversation young people find themselves unsure about how to start. Of course it depends on how the topic is relayed to them at home or school, but it is nevertheless still very helpful.

I got my first period at a sleepover with my best forms at my grandmother's house, so she barely had anything, just one ancient bulky pad. I had gotten PMS-like symptoms about a month before, so my mom thought it was coming then and had talked to me about it, but she hadn't gotten me supplies to carry around yet. I remember it was so much "blood" that it actually woke me up from how uncomfortable it was My little sister on the other hand, used tampons right away and didn't tell anyone that she had it for months because she saw all the fuss made about me getting it and she wanted none of that lol

You know, I think the most important thing this video teaches is not any of the actual facts it presents about periods. It's the attitude the characters have towards them. The teens and parents are so casual and open about them, and treat it like a normal part of life, because it is. They know they don't have to be ashamed or feel gross about it. This is great behavior to model for kids, and I'm glad this video took the time to make itself feel nonchalant instead of big and scary.

I started my period while at a hospital out-patient appointment back in about 1969. I was with my dad & the only toilet paper in the hospital was Izal which was like tracing paper! I told my dad & he gave me his unused hankie which was cotton. Luckily for me we had always been able to talk about stuff so I wasn't embarrassed. He made it all alright.

I had a book called The Care & Keeping of You from American Girl. It was the perfect way for me to learn about periods and body changes because I didn't have to ask someone my questions. When I got my period, I just grabbed a few of my mom's tampons (the kind with no applicator, that was a learning curve).

I got this for my oldest daughter after we'd had a lot of conversations about periods and puberty. She really appreciated having a trusted source to learn more and it covers all sorts of things from hygiene to mental health. There's even a part 2 now for girls who had already started their period. Yup, that was a large part of my sex-ed/puberty education. Of course my mom was super casual about things and we had previous conversations about puberty, periods, and how to use sanitary products. So I felt pretty well covered. Then endometriosis announced itself and things got complicated all over again. And I had to educate myself on that, which was much harder.

Ps, mamadoctorjones, it was your videos that made me comfortable enough to get my recommended preventative treatments and I just had a radical hysterectomy due to cancer. So, good job! Also, camping in the actual woods by a lake, I was 12 I think, I woke up middle of night to my mom yelling, our dog barking, i was dead tired I thought she was yelling about squirrels. I walked out of my tent with a flash light, she’s pointing to the trees where a 3 foot long trail to the beach is. I walk to the head of it, and at the other end of 3 feet was a bear. I looked at it, saw it was just getting into our cake container, and I turned around, told my mom, “it just wants the cake, it’s fine.” And went back to bed 😂🤣😂🤣 I am now 28 and have 19 rescue animals of various sorts. Me and nature are one 😂

I waited a few months because my periods were really light the first 3 months. The first normal period, i told my mom i had to buy tampons. My daughter started using tampons right away, she actually practiced inserting a tampon months prior to getting it...despite me telling her not to. She switched to a cup a few months in.

The closest thing to this video I remember seeing in the 90's was an episode of "Blossom" that I think they had a cake where they drew a uterus on it and talked about 1st periods.

as a conservative Christian, I think the main problem with a lot of abstinence based sex education is that it doesn't go into the biological, pragmatic or statical detail of why sex outside of marriage is bad and kinda just has this single-minded sex is bad and don't do mindset that leaves alot of people confuse about sex and they end up making bad mistakes out of ignorance.

I started in the 60's. No one talked about it or told me much, if anything, about menstruation. For years I missed everything my first day as I flowed so hard nothing could contain it. I was told this was normal. I joined the military at 18 and was placed on the pill to regulate and lessen the flow. Then I underwent test to make sure there was nothing wrong. By the time my daughter went through puberty we had a plan but she never had a problem. I do believe she saw this video in school.

When I was in 6th grade, we had nuns teach sex Ed. Which meant they had us watch a film that was scientific and yet not really telling us anything. This was in the 1960s. Wish I'd had your videos during my teens and early 20s. Keep up the good work!

This video was maybe a bit light on the more biology/science side of explaining periods but it was definitely great about making it clear that it's a normal thing and you don't need to be embarrassed or keep it a secret. And the dad buying pads so casually along with the rest of the items was really great to show it's not just a "womens" or "girls" thing to manage, needing menstrual products is as straightforward as needing more maple syrup and nothing to get worked up about. I know in my school, when we watched these types of videos, we were always separated into girls and boys which only served to reinforce the idea that knowing about our periods was not something we should ever subject a poor boy or man to.

I feel left out. My schools didn't really have any sex ed videos. I vaguely remember learning about eggs and sperm and the uterus, but that's kind of it. My mom gave me a 4-book set of books about puberty that HER mother gave her when she reached puberty (literally the same books passed down, not updated versions of them). She gave them to me around 1988 I think. She got them from her mom around maybe 1972? They included a reference to period belts that used to be used to hold pads in before they had adhesive to stick them to your underwear. They were SO out of date! You know what I never learned about in any form whatsoever until I took an anthro course on human sexuality in college? The existence of the c l i t. My anthro class was the first real sex ed I ever had.

when I was 10, in 5th grade, we were supposed to have our first sex education, which would be exclusively about puberty, no "sex" or intercourse mentioned, similar to this, but my very conservative grandparents (whom I was raised by) refused to sign my permission slip, because they believed it was going to be graphic and "expose me to sex" (little did they know someone under their roof, someone I was supposed to trust, was doing that already years prior). So I ended up missing out on that. not even a full year later I got my first period (i believe the medical term is "menarche") and I legitimately believed I was dying, because while periods were mentioned in my home, they were always brought up in a mocking tone, and with no real explanation of what they are, so I had absolutely no idea what to expect, or that they were normal, or what happens during them, until I went into the school bathroom thinking I needed to have a bowel movement and saw blood all over (I have been a heavy bleeder from the get-go). I only found out what a period really was from the school nurse, who made me feel like an idiot, and was chastised by my grandma who also made me feel like an idiot and shamed me for ruining my clothes. This is what happens when we "leave sex education for the home". Vulnerable children get abused, uneducated children get traumatized, and studies show that lack of sex education also causes a rise in teen pregnancies. We can't "leave sex education for the home" when so many homes will refuse to educate in the first place, and many just don't know how

I GOT SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW YOU POSTED THIS! This was the video they showed us in elementary school. I remember beforehand one of the girls started going around saying how their sister had told them about a mysterious "pancake movie" they were gonna make us watch and it was like this big deal to everyone. Like "I wonder when they're gonna make us watch the pancake movie. How gross do you think it'll be? What do pancakes have to do with anything???" lol. This really brought me back. Also yeah I think they did give us a period pack after watching this. In our school at least. I remember having a little box like that with tiny pads in it and a booklet about puberty. And the only thing I remember from the booklet was a section called "Hair, hair, everywhere!" Which became kind of an inside joke with my siblings for a while.

Yeah, Proctor and Gamble were responsible for those kits. I also got the kit in 2000. This is the only sex ed my district covered. That and pictures of STIs in high school health. New York State doesn’t mandate comprehensive sex education so my ultra conservative district had the viewpoint that “sex doesn’t exist” and therefore didn’t cover anything beyond puberty except for HIV/AIDS (that was a fun one for them to explain without mentioning sex). We also had a teen pregnancy problem while I was in high school.

I wish I had this video growing up. I went through all of these changes on my own because it was taboo in my family. I wasn't even comfortable talking to my sister about this (I taught myself how to use pads). The basic information would have been so helpful in making me feel like what I was going through was normal. For those just starting their periods if the pain isn't manageable with normal pain meds please see/talk to a doctor. I have endometriosis (causes heavy bleeding and cramping) and it took 15 years to figure out because I didn't say anything and had no medical history of period issues.

I don’t think they started teaching us about male puberty until the following year, but apparently some of the girls in my class were already starting their periods. But yeah. Uterus pancakes. You should check out "Where Did I Come From?" (1985). This video was infamous in my high school. ( They show it to the Juniors every year. ) awesome example of chaotic 80s/90s sex ed. (Which was still being used as curriculum when I was a junior in 2001/2002)

I was at school & went to the nurse cause I thought I was dying as well😂I was younger than the age this is taught so I was clueless. One of my favorite authors and her books were so realistic Is “are you there God? It’s me Margret” now it’s in a movie so recommended for girls & boys at this age. The only reason i didn't panic when i got my first one at 15ish was because some of my younger sisters got theirs a year or two before me, it was also confusing why mine never became regular but theirs did. when i was 17-18 i ended up hanging out with a childhood friend who was home from college for the summer. we'd always been close growing up so her mom was no stranger to me. i ended up getting my period and they had to take me to the store for supplies since they'd both switched to menstrual cups! i'd never heard of one so it was really cool to get other peoples perspective on how they deal with their own periods. i can't use one all the time (thanks pcos) but cups are now my preferred method.

I remember my first sex Ed video in 5th grade when they separated the girls and boys. The very next year, I started my first period. We had to have our parents sign a consent form which my mother did. It was good info. The teachers answered our questions and my mom followed up with me too. I started educating my daughters when then saw me changing my pads etc in age appropriate terms. They started asking at 1 so my pads were Mommy diapers and my tampons were Mommy bandaids 😅. My oldest is 6 now and she will just say, Mommy is on her period. I'll get her pads and tampons. ❤
