Well, we finally did it. This is the third and final installment of the iconic Dr. D series. Pour one out for our favorite biology nerd and sex ed teacher, Dr. D. In this final episode, he teaches us all about babies - all the way from the cursed combination of Emmy Lou Egg and Steve Sperm to “initiating birth sequence.” Will we ever get these visuals out of our scarred brains? I know I won’t. But at least there was some excellent learning along the way!

You know, I was worried about my psych meds (amphetamines) would hurt the baby during pregnancy. My baby stopped moving around 35 weeks and had to be removed via emergency C-section and due to the guilt imposed upon me by so many people who I told I was on medication, I was terrified I had ruined everything. Turns out, they tested the baby (who survived and is doing well six months later!) and my placenta and much to my surprise, NEITHER tested positive for amphetamines! And he was the right size for his gestational age. I really wish people wouldn't shame pregnant women for doing things like taking medications that are necessary to remain mentally healthy enough to be safe during pregnancy. You can't know that it's going to hurt the baby or not. Don't feel shame if you need help during pregnancy and don't let people make you feel bad about it. Obviously you need to take it as prescribed and be monitored throughout the pregnancy, but again, don't let people guilt you about taking care of your mental health.

People talk about how it's SO RISKY but there's not really enough data out there to back that up, and there are real risks to the pregnant person and the developing baby to the person stopping their stimulant medication. I've been really lucky to be supported by my GP, my midwife, my psychiatrist and the public obstetric team that my midwife consulted who all supported me staying on concerta through pregnancy and breastfeeding. My boy was a week overdue and is a delightful happy healthy 5 month old now, sitting around the 80th centile for weight.

There’s a difference in taking prescription amphetamines and taking street drugs. One is carefully prescribed, studied, and monitored. The other was acquired and sold out of who knows where and the people selling it couldn’t care less if it causes harm.

@@karencamp741 Freakin' ridiculous not to educate young people about birth control. Different jurisdictions have different laws, but I recall it was rumoured in my friend group that a certain doctor would provide birth control if you asked without telling anyone, and it worked. Thanks for the comment about HG. I had HG, I lost 30lbs, couldn't keep water down, spent weeks hooked up to an IV and baby boy was absolutely chillin in there. Doctors and nurses were constantly reassuring me that even if I was barely surviving, baby could be thriving.
@frickfrack7075

I am at 12 weeks, finally, and I've had dry HG . Where I'm extremely nauseous but don't vomit. I lost about 10lbs the first 8 weeks, until I was put on 3 meds to help. I didn't lose anymore weight, but I have yet to gain any. I have been feeling so weak and awful for so long. However, I have noticed that I'm feeling less intense nausea. I have no appetite, and still feel pretty weak, but I'm happy to feel better a few days out of the week. I'm hoping as the weeks go on, I'll continue to feel more and more better. I've had 2 other children, and neither of those pregnancies affected me like this one. Both of those were boys, so everyone thinks this one will be a girl. I hope! The guilt you feel, or at least that I have felt, for not getting the proper nutrition has been weighing on me so much. I haven't been able to take my prenatal either which has also deeply affected me. Being so ill all of the day every day has weighed immensely on my mental health and has been incredibly isolating. My husband has been very helpful , and I'm very appreciative. But, it's still isolating when it's only you experiencing it. There's an OB shortage here in the US right now and my area has been greatly affected. So, I'm having to see my GP for ob care until I can get into an OB office in October. (Which I'll have to travel over an hour to) Luckily for me, my GP "caught babies" as an obgyn for 30 years before becoming a GP. So he's knowledgeable and helpful where it's needed. He also explained that I wasn't harming the baby, and he was more concerned with my health. He told me that not taking the prenatal right now wasn't a big deal right now, and to just ingest whatever I could tolerate. I'm so thankful for his words, because the guilt can be so heavy.
@frickfrack7075
@frickfrack7075 9 ай бұрын
Also, most ob offices, at least in my area (in a 2 hour radius) will not accept any patients until they're at least 12 weeks. Forcing everyone to see a GP for ob care until they're 12 week mark. Due to the shortages, most find it hard to even get into an office by 12 weeks, and are going over half their pregnancy before getting ob care. Some, in my area *most*, offices are even refusing to take on any new patients because of the overload of patients being funneled into these few offices. For instance, in my area of West Tennessee, we've had probably a dozen offices close. Forcing everyone to travel 1 1/2 -2 hours to visit an obgyn. I got lucky, and the day I scheduled my appt with the OB they had a cancellation in October. Otherwise it was going to be late November before I could be seen. That would've put me well over half my pregnancy before being seen. I've been told that several other offices have stopped taking new patients. Funneling all pregnancies into one or two offices. It's so insane. I'm also high risk, and the office I'm going to be seen at is a high risk ob. So that's troubling considering how long you have to wait to be seen and their work load.

@@frickfrack7075, I'm so sorry you are going through this. It is just awful that the legislators don't know what women face and the hardships caused by their ignorance. When I was pregnant with my first, there was a very high malpractice insurance crisis and local OBGYNs weren't taking new patients. Women had to travel across counties to get care until the legislature allowed doctors to practice without insurance as long as they posted that. Good luck with your baby and I hope you feel better soon. The work you are doing to build a human is so taxing and not really appreciated by society the way it ought to be. You are a warrior for humanity and I stand in solidarity with you.

@@j.n.sloane man I really appreciate all those kind words! It's a very real shame what they're willing to do without, for money. Especially given the fact that they've made abortion illegal, so what are women supposed to do when they can't even get proper ob care. It's really ass backwards. We're speaking to our state rep, but this is a nationwide issue so there's not much we can do at the moment but hope for the best. It's very dangerous, risky, to have pregnant women traveling over an hour away to deliver their baby. This is my third child, once I go into labor, it will progress quickly. Luckily, I've only had c sections, and plan to this time as well, but that doesn't mean that I won't go into labor before a scheduled c section. It's incredibly dangerous to leave that up to risk, given how far we have to travel to deliver. I can't imagine how much scarier it must be for anyone risking an unplanned labor and delivery.

Aside from the fascinating exploration of the placenta during my ob/gyn rotation, getting to learn dilation and effacement measurements was my favorite thing (aside from the actual delivery). The human body is just so intriguing in how it accommodates pregnancy and birth. I guess that true of any animal. But being human myself, most days, it's simply a wonder and I'm glad I got to experience it from both sides - as a patient and as a nurse. Teachers spoke to us honestly about STDs, condoms, puberty, etc. One time a teacher put on one of these false education vides and said "I'm being forced to put this on, pay no attention to it." So, most people just scribbled in their binders. I watched, and at the end I asked if it was satire and asked if we were supposed to laugh at it. The teacher chuckled, but, didn't respond.

Lmao my 4th (and last baby) practically launched herself out when she came 😂 I went from my water leaking and being almost a 3, to a 6, to pushing in about 5mins and the doctor and nurses were anything, but ready. My husband told them I was pushing and they didn't believe him 😂.

My mom had to stand at the desk to ask to be put in delivery room for her 5th kid because she seemed so composed. She said, "if you don't put me in a delivery room now I'm going to have this kid right here...💁‍♀️ I know how I deliver already 😎" Of course she was right, nurse just went to check the cervix and was like "I feel the head?!?! 🤯😱" and went rushing out for a midwife who I believe was kind of busy with another delivery 😅

Sounds a bit like my mum's 3rd labor. She had a home birth. It's a familly story that the midwife said "Just a minute", and was still setting up the gas and air machine when my brother arrived!

My 3rd baby was also a fast labor (about 2hrs) once they broke my water to start thing. I had too much fluid so nothing would start, the doctor didn't believe the nurse lol. I went from a 3 to a 5 in seconds and less than 2hrs later I was a 10 and my body was evicting a baby who planned to never come out lol I pushed her out in 5 pushes or less. At least they were actually set up that time. You would think people would believe you when you say baby is ready, I'm pushing.

Ugh yes with the gestational age. I knew exactly when I got pregnant (ovulation testing) and the nurse doing my intake was gonig off my last period and ignored me when I said "but I'll be a week behind that, i ovulated on day 21, not the default day 14". She entered it based on the usual and sure enough, when I got a dating ultrasound, I was right where I said I'd be.

I thought that babies would feed off the ‘yolk’ of the egg until the yellow body implants and develops into the placenta, which takes the majority of the first trimester? So when the mother is having bad ‘morning’ sickness, the baby is fine to grow, and it’s more about trying to help the mother keep *something* down, and the healthy eating can come in the second and third trimesters, where most mothers don’t have the sickness.

hi doc, as a teen I am curious about sex and stuff and the country I come from is really conservative about such topics and its changing but there's a long way before that, anyway schools don't have sex ed classes ever and parents are very awkward and shy away from these conversations, even period is a taboo here and generally we are not taken to gynaecologists to help us understand this stuff, so it would be very helpful to get that understanding about sexual activities, diseases etc. from a trusted doctor so that a lot of people like me are not completely clueless as we involve in sexual activities and stuff. thanks :)))

MDJ, id love to get your input on the shortage of OB care here in the US, due to Medicaid. I've personally been affected by this, and at 12 weeks still have not been seen by an ob. Even at high risk, i cannot be seen until I'm 12 weeks, and i scheduled my visit at 5 weeks but my appt isn't until October. Which will put me closer to my half way mark. In my area, we are being forced to travel nearly 2 hours to see an ob or women's center. Which is putting more burden on the centers that are still open which is causing them to cease accepting new patients, in turn causing patients to travel even further for care.

Hello! A possible helpful topic for a video: low testosterone in women. I have had my testosterone checked twice and both times it’s been super low (around a 4), I have chronic fatigue/anxiety/depression (the depression is being treated) I have asked both an endocrinologist and my gyn about the low testosterone and they both sort of brushed it off- my gyn said “I don’t want to put you on testosterone pills…” But isn’t there more natural ways to increase testosterone? Or like creams or gels too? The internet has a ton of supplements but I definitely don’t want to just take something without understanding it all. Are OTC sex hormones regulated? How safe are they? I would just be really intrigued by your input on the topic of low testosterone in women and what can be done about it. Thanks!!!

Ok I'm old so I didn't experience these videos ever. I was in elementary in the 1970s and middle/ high school in the 1980s. We had old reel-to-reel vids of 60s kids and a Joan Baez-like singer performing a song by Shel Silverstein (Don't Give a Dose to the One You Love Most). This is amazing and also a terrible disservice to EmmyLou Harris and Stevie Nicks. ETA: AWW man. I thought button 2 would be the placenta. That totally needs to be known.
