They’re all songs Mamamoo did on the competition show Immortal Songs ( in which they won) where singers cover classic oldies. They appeared on the show a few times and in 2016 it really catapulted them into the forefront of girl groups at the time.

Moonbyul was in a competition show for rappers to show of their vocals and won. The cover of psy refuge she performed there, shows of her vocals and the emotion she is able to put in it. She once said she quit being a raper and became a vocalist for her solo career, she still raps and has some rap songs but most of her solo work is vocals. ddu ddu ddu, shutdown, like a fool and absence are some of my favorite vocal heavy songs of her. After her cover of day 6 congratiulations she wanted to do more pop rock songs and gave us memories and attention seeker. Her voice suites that style a lot.

Unlike a lot of other groups they don't have 'a' type of music. They don't limit themselves to one style, genre, beat,.... not even in their own songs as a group or making songs my themselves, no matter original songs or covers. Anything from EDM, Bossa Nova, pop/rock, balads, .... 'I miss you' and Hwasa's 'LMM' always seem to play when there is lots of dust in my room "Shut down' by Moonbyul just melts me, even although I'm male 'IMAGE (5:52 am) ' by Solar (look up the live performance) leaves me devastated even although I don't understand Korean. 'Butterfly' and 'Good bye 'by Wheein.... god damn, that voice and how it portrays emotion... and then she makes something like 'Easy' which is just a groovy fun song Listen to Mamamoo's sultry 'words don't come easy' and then listen to 'Paint me' that is a ballad that just blows one away (including Moonbuyl singing)

So, this video is from a 2017 concert (4 hour long). It is pure live vocals as you figured out. The show Immortal Songs is a competition show where the contestants cover songs by a famous Korean artist. It plays to an older audience usually and idol groups were rather looked down on. Mamamoo was the first girl group to win and the first idol group to win more than once. They first competed in their rookie year and eventually appeared 14 times and won 3 times. Solar also appeared solo once. Moonbyul was pushed into being a rapper but she is generally considered one of the best female rappers in kpop. For the first few years she suffered lack of vocal confidence, but she sang more as the years went by and most of her solo work is vocal rather than rap. She does write all her raps (she is the most credited female artist in kpop) and most of these songs did not have a rap part in the original so those are hers rather than cover. She recently appeared on a show Second World, where rappers competed as vocalists and she totally dominated the field. Watch her cover of Congratulations from the show for an example.

Delilah, one of the songs performed by MMM on the show, was originally made famous by Tom Jones. I have no idea if that was a one off non-Korean song though.

@@Kreigmstr I've forgotten the name, but there was a Korean artist who covered the Tom Jones song and they are covering his version not the Tom Jones original.

@@Kreigmstr Yes, the Korean version came out a year or so after the Tom Jones version, in the late 1960s. The singer, Jo Young-Nam, is present for the Mamamoo performance on Immortal Songs 2, more than 45 years later, seemingly half-asleep for most of it. Random fact: his ex-wife is the legendary actress Youn Yuh-Jung. Her acceptance speech when she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, for her role in the mixed language film Minari, is a total delight and worth seeking out.

There isn't much I can add about this performance that others haven't already said, but when I say that this is the one video that I will go back to on a weekly basis just for the thrill it gives me, I mean it LOL. When I watched this for the first time I can still vividly remember how my jaw just instinctively slacked when Solar would sing literally any part. As far as Moonbyul's vocals go, personally I'm a big fan of her slower/deeper feeling songs such as "ddu ddu ddu", "snow", and "like a fool" I think any of these really bring out the exact feelings she tries to convey to the listener quite perfectly so they for sure have a high recommendation from me! ^^

Very perceptive comments about their vocal control and the various techniques they employ. This performance is from their 2nd annual concert series in 2017 called Moosical Curtain Call and, though they sound like total pros who've been owning audiences for decades, this was probably the 5th concert of their career and they've only gotten better since then. Also glad you acknowledged the band, who killed it imo. RBW has an in-house band/orchestra that MMM has worked with for years. You can find a vid of a live streamed rehearsal session with the band prior to their 2016 debut concerts called Moosical Concert Preview if you're curious. The medley consists of some of the covers they had performed on the singing competition tv show Immortal Songs 2 between 2015-17. MMM appeared on the show 14 times between 2015-19 and they're some of the best vocal performances by a girl group you'll ever hear. The tv network used to block reactions but in the last year or two several people have uploaded reactions to MMM's performances on the show so maybe they changed their policy. Whether you react to them or not I'd highly recommend watching them when you get a chance. If you're like me it will turn into a binge session - they're just spectacular. My favorites are Delilah (the old Tom Jones hit) and the Korean ballad Backwoods (the first song in this medley). If you want something comparable from their original discography watch their performance of I Miss You on the competition tv show Queendom, which is safe for reactions. You heard a snippet of I Miss You in the Killing Voice vid.

Mamamoo is such a unique and fun group to follow. They're a unicorn in the kpop where the talent is at the forefront of what they do at times and the chemistry is undeniable between them. Mamamoo helped to bring respect to Kpop acts especially as a rookie girl group getting acclaim on Immortal Songs. Also Mamamoo, Solar in particular, is responsible for the creation of Killing Voices, which is a spinoff of a rap oriented show called Killing Verses. My favorite thing about them outside of the talent is they actually have some real positive and meaningful messages in their songs. They take on topics such as body positivity, embracing their flaws and even have song dealing with isolation that occured during covid. On the other side they dont take themselves too seriously as well. They have songs that cover more light-hearted topics such as comparing heights, dad jokes and a b-side track about trying to sleep in a car. Overall Mamamoo is a very diverse group that can successfully cover different genres. You can see how diverse they are individually through their solo music and even in some shows where they switch parts with each other for fun including Moonbyul.

These are some of the songs from the immortal songs contest show, there are actually more songs than these but these were the ones they put together for this concert. These are all covers but moonbyul did write the lyrics in for each song and like anything mamamoo does they do change things enough to make these mamamoo songs. They were in fact the first kpop group to win this contest and for many years had the most wins of anyone, until a couple years ago when a male group got 4 wins over their 3. It was significant because kpop groups had never been invited to the contest, I believe soloists did but a group had never been considered viable because of the typical focus on performance over vocals. But Mamamoo was known to be entirely focused on vocals. These wins really helped launch their career because they did not come from a large company with massive budgets. They were a group living in run down apartments and busking in the street to self promote. They actually sing a lot of genres so you wont be disappointed, in fact it is probably more accurate to say they make every genre mamamoo. Over the years moonbyul does sing more, especially with her solo albums and her subgroup mamamoo+ with Solar. Also they actually do a lot of lyrics, composing, arraigning and producing songs and MVs. They are all musicians, though rarely show it, Solar is known to be the type who can play any instrument she wants but Piano is the only one with videos. You you have to go back to a Solar Wheein cover of no cool, I'm sorry to see her on piano or more recently a few months ago, her solo rock song But , on her Solarsido site she played a piano only version of the song. they sing this well because of extreme practice. They do things like sing while exercising to make sure they can stay on pitch even with choreo and in Solar's Despacito cover, after multiple songs and 4 minutes of singing and choreo at the end of that, she is on a dance pile spinning around hanging one handed holding the mic and still belting out those power vocals like it is the easiest thing to do. If you want another live set of 2 full songs and a medley of their other songs, the Hwasa TV show Episode 8, Mamamoo hits live collection, has 1llella and Paint me(incredible ballad) with a medley in between, to a live band. If you want to jump into this year it is all Solo albums for each( latest solos) and the Solar Emotion(gamsung) project, 7 and 8( 1-6 are from 5 years ago). The actually do 25 songs a year with covers, solos, OSTs and collabs included. I could go on.

I think you'll be more of a b-side guy 🤍 Their discography it's wonderful, but maybe you'll like more the b-sides than the title tracks that are made for being more trending, even though I think they are all amazing too. Great that you listened to this because I think that the first clip (killing voices) injustice Solar a little I don't know how to explain it correctly, but seeing your reaction between the last clip and this clip clarifies the matter more,i love if you focus on Solar more She's great, she's the most skilled member as she is a big reason for the group reaching this extent, she was the one who was managing the team before the demarcation in a strict and serious way to give their best,and also a nice piece of information she taught moonbyul rap and she also helped weein in the beginning while singing, such as singing notes with her because weein was still not reaching the highest level in singing,so solar was making her voice Like weein when it's time for weein high note part, She wrote a lot of the group's wonderful songs, and she is also one of the K-pop artists who work hard in every detail on their own solo albums, and this is rare, solar is a really great artist 💗✨

At this point in Mamamoo, Moon Byul hadn’t really developed her confidence in singing. She’s always sang harmonies with the group. But any time you heard her sing at this time it was very hesitant. She’s gotten a lot of practice and has her confidence up now. You can hear it more and more as time goes.

It's not that Moonbyul's singing is bad, she is more than capable, just that the other three are gifted with crazy wild vocals that makes her pale in comparison. She has mentioned that she's getting more and more confident with her singing with the help of the 3.

If the stories are true, Moonbyul was forced to be the main rapper or leave the group. So after that she struggled with her vocal confidence. She has gone out of the way( especially the past few years) on her solo work to showcase her amazing singing voice.

Moonbyul unfortunately has a much lower register compared to the other members, which might make her seem like a much weaker vocalist compared to other members. I think there was a clip somewhere on the internet where they listen to a male version of one of their song and Moonbyul's tone is exactly the male version of Wheein's. So the company decides to turn her into a rapper instead of having to struggle against being labeled as the weakest vocals. In retrospect, I think it was a good decision. Now that she is the most credited and one of the best idol rapper in the industry, everyone thinks she's a great rapper that has amazing singing voice. One thing that nobody really notice is how long the medley is and how it was structured to gradually build up in energy. Even when it's divided into four person, with the amount of harms and punches each member is assigned to, it would still feel as exhausting as performing a 5-6 minute solo song. The stamina required to do this kind of performance in the middle of a 4 hour concert blows my mind.

The general concept of the show is that multiple singers come on to compete by singing a cover. Voting is done by the audience. There’s usually a featured singer and the singers cover different songs from that singer. There could also be a specific theme, and the singers choose songs to cover based on that theme. Moonbyul will be coming to Jersey City for a solo concert on Black Friday. Not sure if you will be busy, but it will be a great experience!

None of these songs had rap in them in their original versions. Moonbyul wrote the raps for them. So, sometimes they don't really fit well. During the recording of the Killing Voice, Hwasa had been sick, so her voice wasn't in top shape. Some of the dance moves were copied from the original MVs and are a bit stale. Regarding Byul, I know I'll probably get some flak for this, her singing voice has improved over the last several years. I am assuming that the decision for her to rap was made because she just wasn't as good as Solar, Wheein and Hwasa and would have stuck out like a sore thumb next to the other 3 (whom I consider to all be in the top 10 of female singers in kpop). As a rapper though, she really did a fantastic job and is one of the top credited women in kpop because of all the raps she wrote. She has come a long way with her singing and out of all the solo work that they have done recently, I listen to Byul's songs more than any of the others.
