I love sticky rice and Jeow Bong. Years age I worked with 3 brothers from Laos. They introduced me to sticky rice and taught me how to make it. I have the traditional pot and basket to make it in.

I love that! its def the best way to make sticky rice as long as you plan ahead and have access to the equipment. What other Lao foods do you like eating with sticky rice?

I am so lucky!!! We have Hmong AND Lao food in, believe it or not, Billings Montana. Most of the Hmong families moved away after about 15 years having a refugee community here, which was sad, but they rejoined their extended families and/or joined into much bigger communities. And then we had a few Lao families move here. One of the Hmong kids married a Northern Lao kid and it brought two restaurant families together. For decades they served Chinese-American food, but then sold the restaurants and opened food trucks & eventually new restaurants with real Hmong and Lao food. It does not get very challenging in terms of spice and the dishes beloved locally are, I’m sure, “plain” versions of the food, but it’s so cool to have something most cities don’t have! We had Afghan food for a bit too, but the lady was able to rejoin her family elsewhere in the US. Funny that all the anti-refugee people ended up in line for stuffed naan…

I made this following your guide and it came out perfect! I have a 1000w microwave. Using your math (1000/10= 100 x 7 = 700) I heat it at a PL 7. Thank you so much for this hack and detail guidance. ❤

Bravo for taking advantage of the microwave's features. Yes, the power levels serve a purpose. And any food cooked in a microwave needs the standing time to finish cooking, Well done!

Sticky rice to Lao Cuisine is what the baguette is to French cuisine. Both these cuisines can be seen across multiple countries where they have left or brought their influence. Sticky rice is synonymous with Lao cuisine. Keep going sharing our cuisine brother.

Thanks for the great tutorial! Can’t wait to try this out! Kind of reminds me of fufu from Benin and the Caribbean. Really cool how different cultures utilized the starchy foods local to them to create similar but unique dishes.

That's very nice! I've never thought of making rice in a microwave like that - I usually soak it in water for the night, and it takes too much time. Now, I'm curious about finding some jeow bong in my country) There should be some Asian places that sell it. It would be such a wonderful meal to pre-cook and take to the office!

I didn't know sticky rice was a thing the same way chips are used for dipping. I like the one-handed operation to shape small oval balls. I'd like to know other dipping choices (Google knows everything). At first, I was wondering if all those steps with the rinsing, draining, stirring, microwave configuration, (and I didn't know what to think when you brought out your own little basket with a lid), was worth all the trouble when I could just go to Costco and buy the microwavable sticky rice bowls. But then, when I saw the finished product, it all made sense! Wonder if I should put off this way to make sticky rice until I get a cute little something to put it into like yours. If I'm going to do something, I might as well do it right😉.

I have been cooking Lao food for a long time (taught by Lao friends), so I know what kao neow should be like. This recipe produced well-cooked rice that was too wet, so, though it stuck to itself as it was supposed to, it also stuck to my fingers. Any suggestions for how to solve this problem? I used a 700 watt microwave for 6 minutes total.

Hey Saeng, how do I store left over sticky rice and reheat them later? When i refrigerate sticky rice its hard to separate them, also reheating them in the microwave made it hard and crunchy. any tips? cheers!
@SaengsKitchen3 ай бұрын
Hi there! Great questions. Usually I store left over sticky rice in a breathable container. It does not need to be refrigerated since well cooked sticky rice shouldn’t be wet so I just leave it out but usually it’s only for one night since all the sticky rice is eaten the next day (don’t make too much if you can’t finish it the next day). Don’t keep sticky rice outside for more than one night or else it may mold. And I reheat day old sticky rice with the steaming method as it needs to be rehydrated. I haven’t tried the reheating day old sticky rice method with a microwave yet

Why is sticky rice so much more expensive it’s unfair
@LettieLoop3 ай бұрын
Because it's more labour intensive than other rice. People should be paid fairly and in accordance with their hours of labour.
