Just a question: have you ever been to the Netherlands or Denmark? I as a German think that the people in these countries do much better in speaking English. We Germans may be good in grammar but we are for sure not the best in pronunciation. Do you now why? Our German TV channels overdub all foreign movies with the German language. The TV stations in Denmark or the Netherlands broadcast movies in the original language and provide subtitles in Danish or Dutch. That is why the Danes or the Dutchies are much better able to speak English. I have made this experience myself, being posted as a soldier of the German Army to the military headquarters of the NATO forces in Mons, Belgium in 1975.

Whole Scandinavia & Benelux has a amazing level of english. In Germany we slowly achieve the level of mastering to languages for a broad area of people. My biggest surprise was India. Hindi, English and their mother tongue. Mostly with 3 different writing systems 🤯 I think in our future there 2 scenarios. Most of us can speak 2 to 4 languages or Most of us can speak one and the rest is an instant translation via gadget. The probability the first one is higher if our respect of the ability to articulate in different languages doesn't drop down. At the moment I learn a South Indian language. I love it. It's like thinking with a different brain. 😁

Pro tip for German-English friendships: Everyone speaks in the language that still needs some practice. The German speaks English and the New Zealander answers in German. So both can practice their language skills and everyone has the possibility to change the language if necessary, if a word doesn't occur to them.

That's how some of my German friends and I do it - for the reasons mentioned. We find it works really well for us, and having a friend available to offer advice on the usage of their native language helps us gain confidence to later interact with other people we don't know so well. I also find watching films & TV shows in English with German subtitles helps me learn as I actively read the German subtitles while passively listening to the English soundtrack - not only easier for my brain to mesh the languages, but good to see how German sentence structure, grammar etc. works. On the other hand, when watching a film in German or another language with English subtitles, I personally tend to concentrate on reading the English subtitles as my hearing basically switches off when reading.

As a long time immigrant in NZ, I can say that I was shocked at how much nakedness is associated with shame and almost filth here in NZ! I will never forget when a kiwi woman once told me at a parenting coffee group that I shouldn't take a bath with my five year old son. Her reasoning was that he will develop an unhealthy relationship with me😅😅 well he is 13 now and very happily doesn't want to see his mothers body lol Although the other day he walked into my room as I was getting dressed, it did not phase him one bit. I am a native born Kiwi who lived in NZ for 50 years now living in the UK. NZ is extremely conservative in many ways including being naked. I've only visited Germany around 14 times but loved it. Could've lived there but for health reasons didn't and have subsequently divorced. I'd go back and visit in a heartbeat. My spoken German is minimal. I hope NZ has treated you well.

There are countries where English is spoken even better than in Germany: The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland. One of the reasons for this is that English movies there are not dubbed, but subtitled.

But if people like you then say that we aren't good at foreign languages in general, that's even more ridiculous than saying that we are the best at speaking English. You are straight-up wrong. Germans' knowledge of the English language is pretty high compared to the rest of the world. Many many studies support that. In a European comparison, it's only the above-mentioned countries that are doing better, plus Luxembourg iirc. Every single German person around my age knows how to have a basic conversation in English. Yes, some might make embarrassing mistakes, but that's still far ahead of countries like France, Italy and Spain, in which a significant amount of people didn't even take English in school at all. In Germany, since several decades now, every single child has to learn English. And not only English... In order to get an A-levels diploma (Abitur) in Germany, you need to learn a mandatory third language like French/Latin/Spanish on top of that. And guess what, more than 50% of Germans do have an Abitur. So at least 50% of Germans have general knowledge of at least *3* different languages. And that doesn't take into account all the people who went to a Realschule or Hauptschule and voluntarily took a third language even though they didn't have to, or all the Abitur people who voluntarily took a fourth language, or all the people with a migration background who learned a completely different language from their parents. Plenty of my friends know at least 4 or 5 languages and that's not rare in Germany at all.

Absolutely. Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands and the Flemish part of Belgium have much better English skills than Germans do. But compared to Southern or Eastern Europe, an average German resident definitely has better English skills.

Interesting points! Though I have to say, from personal experience, people from Scandinavia or the Netherlands tend to speak a higher level of English than Germans do. We had these terrible "Listen Comprehension" exercises in English class at that time (I left "Realschule" in year 2005). On worn-out cassettes and twenty-year-old cassette players, we heard (f. e.) a Scot and an Irishman talking to each other at King's Cross station at rush hour, while an express train passed by two centimetres away from the microphone. Afterwards we had to answer questions about the text and almost nobody had understood a single word 😂😂 And that was also graded by the teacher 🤣 I hated it back then, I still lack a little practice in speaking, but I understand and write English quite well!

I left "Gymnasium" in 1986, and our English teacher also was a radio buff, so he recorded for us the BBC and the Voice of America on tape (audio!) , who broadcast on shortwave then. That sometimes was also itchy and scratchy, but we did that for practice, and it wasn't graded. -- I must say, it was an advanced course, and we were a very small school, with only 15 people in the English advanced course. He also was a German teacher, so he was quite picky with translation exercises. Wonderful video! Here in the US, most cities and states had mandatory Sundays off. This changed in the mid 1950's as commercialism became more rampant. Laws supporting more maternity benefits are getting more generous depending on each state. Although I can speak and understand what I call "table talk" German, i agree so many people in Germany know some English that it is very easy to get around.

Total agree with the points you made: - I never thought about how openminded germans are on the topic of nudity until I realized the inhibited thinking on it abroad: Guns and violence are cool but someone naked has to be locked away? lol - festivals were and will be a big part of the german culture. The ones you named are just the better known ones. Travel through germany during summer and almost every third village you visit will have some summer/flower/star/music/clerical-festival at hand. I think that corresponds well to your forth point (resting). - germans are somewhat ignorant to their level of spoken english. - work-life-balance is something germans just have figured out right. 'Work hard, play hard' as they say. You explained that very well. - Also a topic that corresponds to the resting part: parental leave. I think it's a great support for parents in our modern society as working, parenting and just being on standby all around the clock takes so much out of your life... Way to go germany! Well I always agree with most things Antoinette says but here on point 3 I disagree greatly. I live in Germany now almost 2 years and Kenya definitely 1000% speaks better English than Germans. It is the language used in schools, it is the formal language, ofcourse we are a British colony and that explains it. But Germany has ok english in general but not the better than all countries absolutely NOT.

Oh yeah, Germany is so family-friendly. I like the system behind it because the women or the men can be at home to take care of the baby mostly till 3 years. But if the parents want to work there are day nurseries for child less than 3 years (In German: (Kinder)-Krippe. I think the goverment takes some pressure from families and give them the chance to choose how they want to do it. I think, it's highly appricated by the families and yeah you're absolutly right.

@@descalled some people in German speaking countries are not perfect at speaking English just like English speakers aren't perfect at speaking German. You understand them, but it isn't proper. Scandinavian countries are better at speaking. A lot of Germans are famous for dis (this), des (these), dos (those), dem (them). I also heard from German speaking countries sis (this), sose (those), sem (them), ses (these). I had a lot of lost in translation moments in Germany. My husband and I went out with a German. The German said let's go get a steek. My husband said ok. We got into our separate cars and I asked my husband "what's a steek?" He said he means steak. A lot of German speaking people don't understand there is exceptions to the rule. German speakers think words with ea is pronounced as ee. My husband speaks Swiss German. He says don't can for can't. He says feets for feet. These are only a few examples. I do correct him, but it's a habit that he's going to have to break.

Hey Antoinette The most time i've seen NordVPN commercial was in IT and hardware videos. The bridge is very simple: IT or hardware is equal PC's and PC's is equal secure use. What was your thought to make commercial for that in a non IT / hardware video? Public jobs are not so relaxed. The east Asian countries have much more difficulties learning english than germans, english is not realated to their languages, but german is very close to english. I also expierenced good english skills in Italy and France as well. Austria is not very different to Germany in the points you made. I think one point you missed was how clean Germany is, so little waste aside the roads and in nature, its with Austria and Switzerland among the cleanest countries I expiereinced.

All the people who are constantly complaining about everything should watch this. 😊 Of course there is always a way up, but what would it be without a challenge 😉 We are living in a safe and wealthy country which returns a lot to the people. Of course it gradually changes over the years since we are not in a vacuum, but have to connect and react to the politics of other countries. And of course, if you want to make life better for people who don't have a lot, the ones who have more will have to share.. But many things are already contributing well, like the productivity, the work /life balance and the public funds for families, etc. Not many countries have better possibilities . And those who are ahead of Germany should be the goal to reach.. As for the nudity: That is somehow regional.. Not everywhere in Germany this relaxed behaviour is normal, but in general people are way more relaxed with nudity than in most other countries... Except for the Scandinavian countries and Netherlands maybe.., which are also ahead when it comes to speaking English, but the German educational system is another special, underrated topic, where there were too many complaints and then they changed it to worse... 😕 When I asked native English speakers, they said, they usually recognize Germans from their word order and French, or Italian people from their accent which means that the Germans have a good pronunciation... Thanks for this nice clip. One thing that I forgot: about 20 years or longer ago, Sundays were REALLY quiet. When I am outside these days, there is a lot more going on, but of course still less than on workdays..

I feel, we're getting better and better at English - but the Netherlands are well known for their good english and mybe Scandinavia too - but we try our best - i listen to lots of english Audiobooks or watch films in English - love the culture - though I never was to a native English speaking county - our pronounciation is hard - 4 we seldom get the opportunety to speak with a native English speaker - most feel English should become our second language - ALLes Gute - auch den Fans - Andy

Sorry to correct you on this one. Traditionally, Fashing is meant to be the last big party before the lent begins, which goes on till the Friday before easter. It's basically "We must not sin at all for the coming weeks, so let's sin as much as we can right before the lent". That's also why it's celebrated more in catholic areas.

I went to a Rudolph Steiner school, there we learn English for 13 years 😁 I also really enjoy that many people here have no problems with at least some level of nudity. My friends and me used to go to the sauna quite often and go skinny dipping in the lake.

I like your videos a lot. Nudity is accepted more in Geramy than in puritan countries like the US or - as it seems - NZ. Many other countries in Europe see nudity much more natural than Germany. Shame is promoted mostly by religion, like they did for centuries. Shame on them. Karneval in the Rhine/Main area is very different from Fashing, you should try that (after corona). Cologne, Düsseldorf or Mainz are good places if you're into big parties.

Wearing swimsuit in a sauna is not allowed actually. Especially in dry saunas. It's unhygienic when you are sweating and all the sweat goes into the the swimsuit. And careful with that ad for the VPN. I'm not sure it's legal to stream something that is blocked over a VPN to avoid the block. :)

Oktoberfest and Karneval are not typical for the whole country though. I for example come from Northern Germany and I live in Berlin and those two regions dont celebrate either of them. However we have other public parties in both regions so I get what you mean. Und ich sehe das mit dem "Englisch sprechen" genauso wie du. English will be integrated in many languages, I guess in 3-500 years all countries will speak English as the first language. All the diversity of languages will be lost, I think it's a real shame that every language is beautiful.
