These types of videos make me so excited to get to Germany! My husband’s still applying and getting lots of interviews, a few offers, too! Anyway, one of the big reasons is because of how Germans take their relaxation so seriously, like you mentioned. There is so much pressure here in the US to have our kids in so many activities - to stay busy. We don’t do that as a family but the pressure is still there.

Guest workers (Gastarbeiter) from Italy brought their cuisine and their gelato to Germany since the 60s, adding their bit of Italian culture to Germany. Same with Greece, Turkey, and various other countries. That's how Germany slowly became multi-cultural after the war.

I have witnessed.two mom's talking and one bragging about the activities her 5 (!) year old son is doing in a week - the poor kid had a schedule like a MANAGER. I think it's the parents who are feeding their own egos that way, no kids of that age would by themselves be coming up with the idea they wanted to do tennis and such.

I have always found that in NZ, it almost feels like there is pressure to appear busy, look busy, be busy, simply say " aww yeah good, keeping busy ya know" I have noticed that if I say to a kiwi parent " nah we're just staying at home this weekend, just chilling" I get a look of such confusion from them. Or the other classic is " what sport does your son play?" when they hardly know us to begin with 😅 there doesn't seem to be any emphasis on simply being and relaxing in NZ. It's almost an embarrassment if you say to someone " nope my child doesn't or wouldn't want to join x, y and z" good point Antoinette! Take care😊

Na dann fahre mal nach Italien. Dort bezahlst du in Siena schon locker 2,50 bis 3€ für eine Kugel. Unser italienischer Eisladen in Berlin Müggelsee macht für 1,20€ soviel Eis auf die Tüte wie 2 Kugeln. Alles ist relativ und abhängig von den Touristengebieten.

Sie wissen aber schon das die Leute nicht umsonst arbeiten, Rechnungen bezahlen müssen und am Ende auch noch ein bisschen leben wollen. Die kaufen genauso einkaufen gehen und eventuell mal Urlaub machen, zudem ist so ein Eisverkauf auch ein Saisongeschäft und vom Wetter abhängig.

Does DM still offer free sanitizing wipes at the baby changing stations or is that all futsch wegen Corona? Cuz I used to shop DM for ethanol-alcohol spray for disinfecting, a bottle only cost 1.75, Denk Mit marke. They are long gone. And the local Apoteka wants over 10 Euros for the exact same thing. I quickly realized that Germans didn't understand that Franzbrandwein is also ethanol alcohol, with a pleasant Fir tree scent. For less than 2E per 500 ml bottle. I felt guilty stocking up on them in Corona time. But I haven't seen a bottle of laundry bleach at Edeka since 2019. Apparently people are sucking up the bleach. Anyway, your video again comforted me while feeling trapped here. It surprised me that NZ people are more driven than Germans, and you feel a more relaxed work culture here. I know nothing about NZ but I assumed it was like Australia, Hawaii, all laid back and stuff.

I really enjoyed this Antoinette. Two things, German Ice cream is amazing. I went to a small place on the edge of Düsseldorf and fell in love with it.....still miss Rush Munro ice cream though. I has some when I went back to Hastings last year complete with waffle cone 😋. You are right about the drug stores there in Germany. I was blown away and made sure I had a good squiz when I was in the DM store. Can I ask am question please? On the instagram pictures you showed am I mistaken or was that a picture of Bare Island taken from the beach. I always can never remember if its Waimarama or Ocean Beach. Great video thanks 😊.

Hi Gary, yes Rush Munros is definitely delicious! I loved their passionfruit sodas!! unfortunately, they changed owners a while back and it doesn't quite taste the same as I remember when I was a kid. I must say I enjoy a classic tip top ice cream. The photo is of Bare Island at Waimarama beach, my favourite place in the whole world! My dad was in the Waimarama surf life-saving club for many years.

Hello Antoinette. Relaxing is very important, a good work life balance can help with your health care. Slow down everything a little bit specially on Sunday is something i really like and appreciate a lot. And if someone disturbs that with his mobile phone that makes me so angry, the same if I met somebody and I gave him/her or them my full attention then i like to have the same for my, it's rude and disrespectful. One about living US families are busy with multiple activities. Parents working not have time for their kids because don’t get has much down time. There not many laws for family. Like months of parents leave, sick leave, or vacation. Like in European countries. Most lucky get a fees days a week or 2. You don’t hear month. Point No. 2 is not really true anymore, unfortunately. The number of people starring on their cellphones all day long, typing unnecessary messages on social network apps, and having phone calls everywhere and at every time of the day is increasing more and more. In my opinion, this is a worldwide phenomenon, which has reached Germany as well. And it is a very bad development which kills face to face conversation more and more. Heute mal auf deutsch: zum Thma Kaffee und Kuchen: Anfang der 90er bin ich viel LKW gefahren. Da war zum täglichen kochen kaum Zeit. Da hab' ich immer am Sonntag einen Kuchen gebacken. Ich hab' damals mal gezählt: ich hatte (vor Internet) 27 Rezepte für Apfelkuchen. Das kann man auch prima mit Kindern machen. Ich bin immer sehr "technisch" drauf. Ich mache aus kochen gerne eine Wissenschaft *lach* : Fokus auf eine Technik , etwas zu kochen, oder auch ein "Gericht". Und dann die besten finden und lernen. (Im Moment arbeite ich gerade an den besten Pommes Frites. Und bin angekommen.) Und so hab' ich auch schon Eiscreme gemacht. Schau' mal nach dem Buch: "Desserts" aus dem GU Verlag. Herausgeberin Anette Wolter. ISBN 3-7742-5870-8 Von dem Buch hab' ich gelernt, Desserts zu kochen. (Geschenk von meinem Bruder.) Mein erstes Rezept war die "Kokos-Dattel-Eiscreme" von Seite 105. Aber ich habe inzwischen die meisten gemacht. Auch beim kochen und backen gibt es eine "Leistungsklasse". Aber da kann man Kinder wunderbar einbeziehen. Und man kann noch "gute Ernährung" vermitteln. Und macht etwas mit denKindern. Zuhause. "Quality time". Du hast mal erzählt, daß ihr direkt neben einem Apfel-Bauernhof aufgewachsen seid. Meine Bitte: mach' doch mal ein Video von Deinem liebsten Apfelkuchen-Rezept! Da jetzt gerade Kirschen-Zeit ist: diesen Kirschkuchen hab' ich gerade gebacken. NOCH sind die Läden sonntags geschlossen. Ich kann mich noch an Zeiten erinnern da waren die samstags bis 14h geöffnet, dann bis 16h und später bis 18h. Heute kann ich samstags bei z.B. Real gar bis 22h einkaufen. Wochentags schlossen die Läden um 18h, bis der "lange Donnerstag" eingeführt wurde. Arbeitszeitregelungen, für die Gewerkschaften in den 1950er/60er gekämpft haben, werden seit den 1990ern konsequent aufgeweicht. Allerdings funktionierte das gesellschaftliche Leben nur so auf der Basis der "Versorgungs-Ehe", wo die Gattin als Hausfrau die Einkäufe und vieles andere bis 18h erledigen konnte, weil sie eben nicht arbeitete. Heutzutage müssen beide Partner arbeiten gehen und kommen finanziell kaum auf einen grünen Zweig. Mein Vater war Handwerksmeister und meine Mutter Hausfrau, welche sich ein kleines Haus bauen konnten. DAS ist heute in der Konstellation nicht mehr möglich. Die Preise für z.B. Energie sind derart gestiegen, wie eben auch die Preise für Speiseeis. Ich erinnere mich, dass ich 1992 1,26DM für 1Liter Super Benzin bezahlte und mich aufregte. In den 80ern lachten wir noch über die Liedzeile "... und kost' Benzin auch dreimarkzehn.... schwupp, die Polizei hat's nich' geseh'n..." so war der Literpreis auch schon bei 1,73€. Dennoch unterschreibe ich, dass es in Deutschland noch recht gemächlich zugeht. Ich komme aus dem Sauerland und kenne die ländliche Umgebung mit Hügeln und Stauseen. Dort werden auch heute noch abends "die Bürgersteige hochgeklappt" und Kinder können zu Fuß in die Schule gehen. Ich ging im letzten Jahr sogar alleine in den Kindergarten und am Wochenende "gehörte Papi mir". Es ist schön zu hören, wie andere Menschen aus anderen Ländern Deutschland sehen, denn wir "Inländer" sind im Laufe der Jahrzehnte "betriebsblind" geworden. Also euch allen einen besinnlich-chilligen Sommer!

But there ARE a lot of people who are glued to their phone, even parents of young children. On some playgrounds you can see them by the dozen, especially in neighborhoods with a lot of uneducated people. And once in the waiting room of a doctor, I saw a young couple with a small and quirky child (about a year old), both parents were at their phones constantly, and when it was the woman's turn to see the doctor, she wanted to leave the kid with his Dad, but the Dad insisted she take the kid with her and he went on playing a game on his phone . 🙄 I didn't know them, but I suppose they were the kind of uneducated folks who don't care much about their kids, don't play with them or read them bedtime stories, but who normally just "park" them in front of the TV. And then there's the kind of parents who will cram their children's lives with all kinds of activities (tennis, ballet, foreign languages and whatnot) so they even have to make an appointment at 2 weeks' notice for playing with a friend. Both are extremes, but they exist. Fortunately the majority of parents in Germany acknowledge that kids are kids and need time to play with their friends, preferably outside, and the parents also take good care of their children, play with them, read to them and encourage them to do things they are interested in, but not too many at a time, so they will still have enough time to play. Only parents from East Asia are extremely ambitious about their children. I remember when my daughter was in nursery school, there was a boy whose mother was Japanese and whose father was Chinese. At the tender age of four, that poor little guy had to attend Japanese AND Chinese classes AND piano lessons, AND at home they spoke English. Later he was a classmate of my daughter, excelled at school and was honored for having the best possible "Abitur" of 1.0.

I hate watching people in America do that with their kids! I mean you had the kids you bothered to bring them to the park to play you obviously wanted children why are you on your phone and ignoring them?? I just don't understand that maybe it's my struggle with infertility, but I just don't get it.

You should have been in Germany 30 years ago when the parents have been more relaxed. Nowadays most of them are helicopter parents, always above them. Taking them all over by car. There is less respect and responsibility among the younger people.

Oh ja. Die Helikoptereltern. Oder Rasemaehereltern. Ganz furchtbar. Oder die Eltern gehen arbeiten und die Kinder duerfen alleine draussen spielen. Das sind die Eltern, die ihre Kinder vernachlaessigen. Eigentlich ist es ziemlich egal, Eltern machen sowieso grundsaetzlich alles falsch. Nur Kinderlose, die wissen immer alles am besten.

Natürlich ist das Leben entspannter, wenn man als Frau nicht arbeiten muss, weil der Mann genug verdient und man sich den ganzen Tag um die Kinder kümmern kann. Aber leider haben die meisten Frauen nicht so ein Glück!

Entschuldigung? Ich finde Ihren Kommentar sehr unfair. Meine Situation hat nichts mit Glück zu tun. Ich arbeite von zu Hause aus und verdiene auch Geld für meine Familie. Ich verbringe den ganzen Tag damit, mich um meine Kinder zu kümmern, und wenn sie abends im Bett liegen, arbeite ich stundenlang. Ich habe das Glück, in Deutschland zu leben, wo das Leben weniger stressig ist als in anderen Ländern, aber ich sage nicht, dass immer alles einfach ist.
