[MAME] Cosmo Gang (US) (c)1990 Namco / Data East (new animated artwork)

Cosmo Gang is a non-video 'redemption' game made by Namco and licensed to Data East. This video demonstrates some new improvements to the MAME artwork system from cuavas which allow elements, including clickable ones, to move smoothly around the screen.

I have been alerted to the fact that I'm playing this wrong, and the targets are on the aliens, not the blocks, so I was making life more difficult for myself by waiting until the blocks had been picked up as you can shoot the aliens immediately. Still, I like playing it my way, adds to the challenge.

this game seams to be using a namco system 1 like sound font.

an actual video game spin off also exists, which plays closer to galaga though the bonus round is based off this game.

there’s also a loose sequel to the video game spinoff called cosmogang the puzzle, a rather unique but kinda boring falling blocks puzzle game… which you may know as pac-attack. it is literally the same game. it also went on to get recycled a second time on the nintendo dsi as a katamari damacy spinoff as well.

@@mamehaze I found out a few days after I made this comment that the issue was that my mouse controls in MAME weren’t enabled in the plugins. Thanks for replying nonetheless though!

So does it essentially emulate the exact sort of electric impulses that move the parts?

I haven't studied the code for the driver for this one, I know some of the Fruit Machine / Slot Machine things drive the stepper motors directly with the main CPUs, sending the pulses to get them into the desired position, shake the reels etc. although some hardware just sends positional values for another MCU to interpret, which gets simulated. Either is possible here depending on the hardware they went with.

I've got a video somewhere of me playing this VERY badly in a UK arcade in the early 90s and the voices are all different. Anyone know if there was another revision of this?

Did the alien in the UFO sound angrier/more dramatic and did the underlings (the ones you shoot) sound really high-pitched and squeaky? If so, it was probably the Japanese version.
