Mamiya 7II Medium Format Rangefinder Camera

Hi, Is it worth buying the Mamiya 7 II + 80mm f/4 £3500-£3800? User says it is immaculate. Is it too risky to buy as they are old. User says he bought it new in 2003. Is this camera recommended for portraits and travel? Do these cameras break as they are old and has electronics.

Another plus...save yourself the crazy cost of a Hasselblad Xpan. Get the 135 adapter for the Mamiya to shoot the same 24x66 pano format on 35mm film.

Not clear why he keeps referring to the Mamiya 7II in comparison to a Leica. It has a lot more in common with my 45 year old Koni Omega M than it has with any Leica, except the Mamiya doesn't have mid-roll interchangeable film magazines like a Koni.

@@morg7736 Differences: film format; shutter system; metering system (for the few Leicas that have a meter). By your standard, the Mamiya 7II has more in common with my Kodak Retina rangefinder collection from the IIc through the IIIS than it has with any Leica.

The Omega is a cool camera, and the front of the camera has a similar profile to the 7II, but, as you said, the 7II doesn't have the interchangeable film backs, or the film winding system. The 7II is like a Leica for two main reasons, the price, which seems to go up by $500 or so each year, and the viewfinder/rangefinder, which is very crisp and clear, like a Leica MP.

@@japanvintagecamera8869 That reminds me of another distinction between Koni Omega and Mamiya 7. The Koni viewfinder is huge and clear, but it is dimmed a bit to add contrast with the rangefinder patch. The frame lines move to adjust for parallax, and they expand and contract to compensate for changes in image size as you focus. Not suggesting that Mamiya owners should bin their 7 and chase down a Koni, which is about 20% bigger, and being all metal, is probably twice as heavy.
