Mamiya/Phase One DF+ Shutter Replacement

Amazing to see its user replaceable. Would like to know which back you had and what system did you shift to and how is the experience with the new system?

I switched to GFX100s. It's more practical for my needs. Miss the colour of my Leaf Credo 40 digital back though.

Ha! I was assisting Joey L on that job when the shutter on his phase went. I think yours had just happened as well..thankfully we had a backup! :P

If I remember correctly he was somewhere in Asia when that happened. But I wouldn't be surprised if that happened more than one time.

any recommendations for a film back that wont come off - its not letting me insert the dark slide to remove - the shutter is still working but its not counting the film, its not reading the film back on - I just want tot remove it with out damaging anything but the darkslide will not go in

DF bodies don’t support film backs. Only Mamiya AFD.

Hey Sasha, wondering if there is a way to be able to shoot with 645DF+ bodies by completely removing the focal plane shutter and mirror part to rely only on leaf shutter lenses for more reliability with these bodies as I heard these parts fail quite often - not sure how difficult it would be to achieve and if the body's capture button would even allow to capture photo afterward?

I seriously doubt it, Etienne. I sold my digital back, otherwise, I would have tried it for you. As far as I know, only P1 XT camera with IQ4 back is capable of doing that.

Hi Sasha, I'm just curious. How often does the Phase One DF+ body shutter fail and as well as Non-Blue Ring Leaf Shutter lenses? And what cause it to fail?

Hi Chee, It happened to my DF+ once. They say the shutter was designed for film cameras and not meant to be used extensively on digital. Never had Leaf Shutter fail in any of my lenses.

I know those shutters are cheap as chips. Could anyone find out where to source the shutters? I would love to be able to purchase spare shutter parts to have on hand just in case.

So, you mean to suggest that the shutter is the reason we lost ability to use the film back's in conjunction with the digital backs? I forgot to ask that at my dealer.

​@@fuzzygear8690 That's a very good question. If you have 645AF body, then it would be easy to check if the plug is the same. It should fit, but it's only my guess.

So is Hasselblad more reliable? I though Hasselblad had issues with the shutter locking up? Question what about the latest Phase One Body, is that using the same shutter?

Hasselblad has issues as well. One of my friends had difficulties with reps in North America to repair his new camera. XF has the same shutter as DF/DF+ which continues to fail (if you follow Joey L you know). I know two studios in my city with failed shutters in their brand new IQ4/XF kits. The replacement took months (it was before the pandemic). I'm sure they got loaner bodies, but still. I also must say that I know people who never EVER had any issues with their Phase One gear. It's a lottery.

Sasha Hey thanks for the reply... I assume your preference is the Mamiya / Phase One format, as opposed to the Hasselblad format. Wow I was surprised to hear the IQ4/XF kits were having issues. Is it shutter? Very good Tut by the way, thank you. I had never considered the shutter as an issue before in terms of digital demand or Phase One ever having such issues. @@GreatWaterCircus Yes, it's the shutter in the XF bodies. I like Hasselblad's viewfinder. It feels larger and brighter than P1/Mamiya DF/DF+. I like how it feels in my hand. And the files, are just WOW, but... No Capture One support. All this said, I'm considering Fuji GFX100.

@@SashaOnyshchenko Giday Sasha So the Hasselblad is the money as a camera and the file delivery is superior. Your looking at the Fuji GFX100, for me Im old fashioned, regarding mirrorless I have tried them and find it all distracting. The price is good. Hmmm hasselblads I have had in the past, old film cameras, nothing but expensive trouble. So do you use capture one and not photoshop...? I have stayed with photoshop, for better or worse, and to be honest Photo Shop has strayed from where it use to be with gadgets and bells and whistles. Unfortunately its the devil I know. Not much. It's very large. Easy to clean either with a blower or special cleaning solution.

Curious what did the photos with the broken shutter look like. I ask because I just bought a DF+ second hand and im getting black bars on shutter speeds above 1/80s.

Jei, you wouldn’t be able to shoot with broken shutter. One of the curtain blades ripped out and got stuck inside in my case. In your case it sounds like a synchronization issue with your focal plane shutter lenses (max flash sync is 1/125) Try different radio or connect your flash directly to your camera’s PC port.

@@SashaOnyshchenkoThanks for the quick reply. I'm shooting with a second hand DF+ with a Mamiya Zd back. My original Mamiya died years (battery leak) ago trying to get back in to medium format work. I get a full photo at 1/80 however. I have been doing everything out on location so no flash is being used. Its quite perplexing. as the DF+ has a ZD back custom setting solely for the back, but no luck. This is quite perplexing. again thanks for the help!
