Mamiya RB-67 Upgrade or Sidegrade?

This is a re-don (!! With Better Audio!!) version of the video about the Mamiya RB-67 and thoughts about replacing it.

After losing out on two jobs in the early 70's because I didn't "have the right equipment", I decided never again. I sold an Alpa, a Leica IIIC, and a bunch of other stuff at a camera show in Atlanta and a week later, had the RB, a 50mm/f4.5, the 127/f3.8 and a 180mm/f.4.5 lenses along with a couple of 120 backs. When I finally sold the studio 32 years later, I'd added a Pro-S body, the 65/f4.5, a 90mm/f3.8 that came with the Pro-S, the 140 macro, the 150 soft focus and the 250mm, along with an assortment of 120 and Polaroid backs. Oh, and I have a 90 degree prism finder and a metered chimney finder to go with the original waist levels.Instead of moving up to newer Mamiya bodies, I invested in the Hasselblad system I couldn't originally afford. Both of the RB bodies have had a few CLA's, backs have been rebuilt and shutters cleaned and calibrated, but I have never had a failure with the RB system. It takes a huge Pelican case and a backpack to hold the cameras and accessories and they don't see the action they used to, but I never doubt that they will be ready to go the next time I pick them up.Excellent video on a favorite camera! Thank you for the comment! Wow, that is an impressive of cool glass for tis camera system. To be honest I kind of got into Mamiya by accident when a Hasselblad 500C or CM was “to expensive”… Maybe not the camera body but the lenses and other parts are steep in price compared with the Mamiya, without any noticeable quality difference. Anyway I also really enjoy this hulking beast of a camera (why I call mine “Godzilla”) and I plan to hold on to it ;-)

When I was looking, a 500CM with the 80mm, waist level finder and an A12 back was selling for $2200 US and I bought RB and first 3 lenses for less than that. I bought the Hasselblad system used later on just because I'd never been able to afford one before, but I would sell the Hasselblad before I would sell the RB. In this case, size really does matter and a 6x7 beats the heck out of a cropped 6x6 when making a rectangular (5x7, 8x10, 11x14, ect) print, any day. Thanks foe your reply!

19 years ago, i was a wedding & event photographer on Maui, Hawaii. At that time using Rolleiflex TLRs and a new Mamiya 7 rangefinder. Wish I still had it. Thesedays using Nikon F5m an assortment of Rollei TLRs, an will soon add a complete Mamiya 6 kit with boxes, etc. If you’re happy with completely mechanical setup, stay with what you know. I/ve also adde MAMIYA m645 PRO, and it does marvelous work. I/ve really become fan of these Mamiya, and Fuji cameras as well. Stick with what you.ve got for now, that’s my advice.

Cool. I have a F2, 3 and 4...might add an F5 in the future, briliant cameras. The 645 Pro are also a fantastic camera system (35mm on steroids). I still have the RB but managed to score a RZ Pro II with some additional goodies for not that much a while back. Anyway, thanks for the tip!

What was your decision? Decades ago, I replaced my worn-out Mamiya C3, C22, and C220 TLR wedding cameras and 55/80/180mm lenses. I replaced them with two Mamiya RB67 bodies and 50/90/180mm lenses. I have never even considered "upgrading" them for the RZ67 because I prefer manual/mechanical cameras over automatic/electronic cameras.

Pro II for the fine focus and the half speed dials. You can keep using most of your RB stuff anyway. Specially if you are thinking to eventually upgrade to a digital back.

i really agree with the value for money thing i got my pro s this summer with 3 lenses and a metered prism for only $400! I'm an art student and have been working with 35mm for a little over a year and since july been getting into medium format with my mamiya and I'm in love! haha im not sure if ill ever feel the need to upgrade to an rz i think if i decide to do some kind of upgrade i would probably save for a "reasonably" priced digital medium format camera! i love film though ugh when i go back to my dslr i don't even know where to begin now i feel lost haha who knows what the future holds though because fuji just announced their mirrorless medium format camera! have you ever gotten to demo a mamiya with a digital back? if so, were the results better, worse, or the same as shooting with film?

Well the Mamiya system is a brilliant camera system I todays digital world. Honestly, I have not been able to use a digital medium format camera of back. But I have read and watched a lot and seen others trying it. Matt Granger for instance used a Hasselblad 50MP digital back… he had a few nit-picks about it. And Julio Ryuuzaki uses a “Frankenstein” RZ-67 with a digital back. And that takes brilliant pictures. There is a short documentary on KZbin “7 Images That Changed Fashion” were John Rankin uses (among other things) a RZ-67 with a digital and film backs. For myself, I would love to someday use a digital back with the RB-67. They just need to go down in price… so estimate 5-8years.

4 years later: that price has gone up significantly. For 400 maybe you'll get one lens and a working body with some scratches today, if youre lucky (!)

Do you have o compensate for the loss of light during the bellow focusing? and how would you meter if you were to compensate for the loss of light???? Really thinking about getting this camera but still thinking about it. I have the Fuji GS645S, its really different then the RB

Kodak Portra well it's quite simple actually, the camera has a exposiour compensation graph on the side that changes according to how far you extend the belows.

Love your video, by far the most detailed comparison. Just a quick question, do you think it is feasible nowadays to put a ZD back on RB/RZ? I am not very positive if this combination will produce anything better than a 35mm sensor like that of D810/850 and A7r series.

Thankt for enjoying! Well I don’t have any personal experience but as I have understood it it´s “not just the Mp-count that counts”, it´s also the physical aria of the sensor. Me myself, I would not say no to a 22Mp ZD-Back. My D7200 is 24Mp and I think the ZD on a RZ-67 or a 645 would smoke my D7200, because of the bigger sensor-aria. So I think “intent of use” is a key factor and it´s not just Mp-count but also sensor aria. I did actually forward your question to some other You Tubers who might have some more hands on experience on the subject, to get a better answer.

Ok, well that's an interesting but a bit of an complicated question. The RB Pro and Pro-S can use the same lenses no problem. The RB Pro-SD has a wider bayonet mount, so there are a few RB series lenses thar are exclusive to the Pro-SD model. The RZ line builds on the concept of the RB but with some innovations. While the RB uses a clockwork mechanism for shutterspeed the RZ is electromechanical. But the main reason to go with a RZ is the RZ Pro-II camera. The advantages with the Pro-II is that it can use RB lenses and it is compatible with bigitalbacks. So it is the most versatile Mamiya 67 in my opinion and a bit more "future proven " then the others, but that's from a technical standpoint.

I decided to stick with the RB, I thought the RZ would be a better choice for the future if I wanted to get a digital back for it. But it seems that there are a few gizmos on the market for the RB as well, so that argument faded a bit. Well I have mostly used this camera for landscapes and still-life’s. but as a qualified guess: I would try the 127, 180 (if i had it) or 250mm depending in the amount of compression you want to have… My newest “toy” for this camera is the 150mm SF-C (soft focus) it might be a bit of a “80s throwback” but if you look at what others have don with that lens on Flicker, you can see that the results are a quite cool. By the way, what film do you usually use?

As you said, with a digital sinc through the flash cable it's like not a need to switch to a RZ model. Me myself use a RB67s and don't feel that isn't enough, and by the way we know thar about this time having a MF sensor is not big of a deal comparing to a not that smaller FF sensor for DSLRs. For me it'll be a challenge when they get a true 645 sensor, but tha ont make change the camera. Hopefully.

Well, I decided to stick with the RB for now. The most pressing reason to switch to a RZ was the compatibility with digital backs. But after finding that you can adapt backs for the RB system that point faded a bit. Besides the RZ can use RB lenses, and the RZ Pro II is not that expensive as camera, film back and waist level viewfinder…Well maybe in the future.

Thank youfor the question. As of my knowledge the K/L lenses were made to be compatible wiyh the RB-67 Pro-SD, the reason being the larger lens to camera interlock. I have used extension tubes with my 90mm and 127mm Mamiya-Sekor lenses, and for my applications the results are cool, they work for me. I tried it with the 250mm but it didn’t focus that grate. There are two extensions for the RB-67 (No.1and No.2) they are 45 and 82mm in length, and are coupled between the camera and the lens. They are really simple devices: just a hollow tube with mechanical connections between the camera and lens. And sometimes you might need a jewellers screwdriver to decouple the lens from the extension, this to my understanding is a “safety lock”. The tubes extend the distance between the film plane and the lens front element and thereby shrinking the minimum focus distance. Tony Northrup has ha grate video explaining this. There is apparently a 140mm Mamiya-Sekor C lens. Mamiya lenses are usually branded Mamiya-Sekor (original), C (multi coted), K/L (modern coting + useble with RB-67 Pro-SD) and L (Pro-SD only). The RB is a brilliant camera system and at present cheeped and almost superior quality to Hasselblad (and this is coming from a Sweed). jafaphotography.com did a overview of the adaptor plate and it is apparently called the HX702 it is made for the RB-67 Pro-SD but it is useable with the Pro-S. And if it is usable with the Pro-S I think it is safe to say it can be used with the original RB-67 Pro. as well.

Well…it is something I don’t really have any experience with, I have a RB-Pro “1” and from what I have been able to gather the KL-lenses were specifically made for the Pro-SD´s wider bayonet mount. Most of the KL lenses came with an adaptor, check tis link: rb67.helluin.org/lenses/ it has healped me in the past. To find an adaptor I would say E-Bay or some specialty site like: www.kamerastore.com or someone like Bellamy Hunt aka. Japan Camera Hunter. Sorry if this wasn’t suck good help, as a mather of fact most of my Mamiya and camera buys in general has been hanging out for a “bargain”. So if you don’t find what you are looking for directly, hang in there!

tony A as far as I know the 50mm is the only one of my lenses that register as radio active. But as long as you don't sleep with it under the pilow at night it is safe to use.

Haha...I have the same name for my Mamiya RB67...because like you say its a beast and made in Japan. personally I would get a ProS like mine..they're still all mechanical and you wont get left high and dry with flat batteries if your'e out somewhere shooting somewhere..a big advantage..for me anyway as I use for shooting landscapes and scenes and dont want to risk not getting the shot.

Ok, Cool. Well my main reasoning for getting a RZ was that the RZ series are ”easier” to integrate with a digital back for studio use. I know Mamiya did make the HX-702 adaptor plate (For the RB line), but sadly it seems to have been discontinued…So second hand then. Anyway, the RB is a Cool camera, I have heard others refer to it as “boat anchor”, so I thought Godzilla sounded better ;-) Anyway thanks for watching!

I do not know if that bayonet difference information at 4:00 is correct. I actually have a PRO-S and K/L lenses fit perfectly! I have them and use them all the time!

Ok, cool. Just to do a clarification: The lenses that are RB-67 Pro SD only are the "L" variants. The K/L variants were shipped with adaptors for the Pro SD´s wider (75mm) mount, so they are multi compatible with all RB camera models. Anyway, thanks for notesing.

Exactly, they have this detachable ring which you can use to thicken the center ring to mount a Pro-SD or a RZ. I suggest to always verify if the ring is included when you buy a K/L lens. Those are great Lens by the way.

Right, I do own a RZ Pro-II (recommended by Julio Ryuuzaki) that has the RBL setting so it is compatible with RB lenses...And to be frank, it was Tony Northrup that got me hooked on Mamiya in the first place. I was planning (being Swedish) to get a Hasselblad.

I think I will get a Blad as well in the future... It's tinier, more compact and it's square format, so they kinda differ. Mamiya was love at first sight though. It's Massive, bulky, super sharp, very physical but great camera. Did you find any problem with the RZ? I heard sometimes they refuse to shoot, did you experience that?

Well I wanted to get a EL/M (the Apollo version). No I can’t say that I have encountered any problems with my RZ. I think “Digital Rev” did a video a few years ago about the RZ and the Pentax 67. Apparently the problems were with the RZ Pro “Mk 1” the second generation Pro II is supposed to have upgraded electronics.

What is in the glass and why does it need to be on the table?

If you look at some of my other videos the glass is a common thread. I use it to create space in the dialogue so the listeners have a chance to digest what has been said, it is a commonly practised speaker technique… I am not trying to bee Jeremy Jahns and edit out every paus, punctuation and…breath. Oh, and it is usually water.

Mamiya did have a adaptor plate for the RB67 named HX-702 and made it possible to use the RB with 645AFD ZD Digital Backs. Though those are hard to find, but it is a start into getting the RB at least compatible with digital backs.

Ok, those are really grate films. I think I will try Ektar 100 soon. Right now I mostly use Ilford Delta 400, HP5 and SFX. but then I tried Fomapan because it was cheap… But I have to say it was surprisingly cool. If you ever want to try something new, I would really recommend it.

I have my RB67, and I will never upgrade to a RZ67. Hope you don't. The reason I got it because is a mechanical camera. The RZ67 can die on the field because of the electronics and plastics.

Ok, tack för det. RB-67 är en fantastisk kamera och riktigt bra objektiv. det enda som kräver batterier är "prismasökaren" då den har inbyggd ljusmätare. Hur som så är det en bra mellanformats kamera till vettiga pengar.

Well, as far as I know the film backs are not that different… Think the SD had an electric “delux” model that advanced the film automatically. The frame size was the same so as far I know the film backs could be used interchangeably through the RB system. The camera with more diversity in film backs in my mind is the RZ-67 system.

@@1989Goodspeed SD backs and the rotative frame have no foam seals. This can be an advantage, spares you cost for replacing fallen apart seals. Yes, you can mount SD backs on the Pro-S and viceversa. The electric power back offers 6x8 (but only in portrait orientation) and it was indeed intended for the SD, but if you put an SD rotating back onto the Pro-S it will work there too. Not very big differences, but good to know when looking to buy an RB.

Frome two sources actually: fisrt I tested the lens with a Giger/Rontgen meter and it showed activity Beta and Gamma. I even did a video about it, link in this comment. Secondly I E-mailed the Swedish “Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten” in English the Radiation Safety Authority, the government agency tasked with all safety aspects surrounding ionising radiation. I have a Mamiya RB67 Pro S, and a Mamiya 645, the RB has the 90mm f/3.8, and the 645 has the 80mm f/1.9, love both of them, and yes it's a tank compared to the Hasselblad, but I still lust after a 503. Anyways, high res scans of my MF shots just destroy anything I can get digital. Love, love, love my MF camera's and the whole darkroom process, an art that is being lost but some of us are still keeping it alive.

Well if you look at some of my newer videos, I now have a RB and a RZ… and some other Mamiya camras. Ok, the 503 is a brilliant Hasselblad, think it is the one Matt Granger has. Though if I would get a Hasselblad it would probably be a 500C or the 500EL. Most “basic” or the Apollo model ;-) I wouldn’t say the darkroom process is lost, rather it has become a niche for those who think Instagram filters and snapshat animations are too boring. Manual Art is a niche anymore, I have my degree in studio art, I'm a painter mainly (airbrush fine art), and love the old tools and process, even for boring things like magazine layouts, and manual photo retouching. Their is an organic nature to it that can't be digitally replicated.

I am with you 100% on that. I do too enjoy the organic feel of analogue. Wow, you know I was actually researching about getting some basic airbrush supplies to test it. Actually before I got into photography I did some oil painting (care of Bob Ross). But now with Photography I started to think about getting into airbrush…Do you use single or double action airbrushes? When it comes to digital I am mainly into HDR (Trey Ratcliff) and IR… But you can’t really beat the MF Mamiya 6x7 since you got 42 square centimetres of negative.

Double action, I have Iwata's, lot's of them, but my main brush is a CM-SB V2 & CM-C+ V2. I actually have a minor sponsorship and teach airbrushing, which soon I will be hopefully teaching the only fine art airbrush class in the US. In fact a few weeks ago I was giving a lecture and demo at WWU, and I asked people if they have seen or remember old playboys from the 50's-60's, and how the girls looked more like a painting than a photograph, and that's because they are paintings!!! LOL

Ok, cool. Well might not be Play Boy but I really thought the covers art of the old Heavy Metal magazines were really cool, they must be airbrush right? Anyway hope your teaching program becomes a reality. Lol. We don’t say “fingers crossed” in Sweden, we say “holding our thumbs” though the meaning is the same (wishing luck). So fin art airbrush sounds interesting.

buy a mamiya rz proii. I bought one with two lenses a ae prisem finder a wlf finder a side grip one extra back a poloride back for 1125 euros.

Keep it! No question about it! There's nothing better than mechanical MF cameras. I have two bodys, four backs and six lenses myself. IF it should fail you can send it out for repair easily. You can shoot anywhere, anytime...even in cold conditions. Electronics will eventually fail and you cannot repair it without paying a ridiculous amount of money! Buy a couple of additional SD 6x7 backs because of the mechanical light traps instead of the older felt traps and you are good for the rest of your life:) The lenses are outstanding, and cheap:) You can't get better quality for money than with the RB. cheers /Anders

Thanks Anders. Well I still have the RB, but since I did this video I have to say I might have turned into a “Mamiya Fan-Boy” (the collection has grown). I totally agree, Mamiya is the best “bang-for-your-buck” medium format camera brand in my opinion booth in 67 and 645. Love old MF/mechanical cameras. Thanks for watching! All the best/ Tobias.

Yes I know, I was referring to the L-series not the K/L-series. The L was exclusive to the RB67 Pro-SD the K/L´s were backwards compatible with the appropriate adaptor. The L-series was only made in two focus lengths, and was only compatible with the Pro-SD.

Understood. I just thought I'd post my clarification so that people knew there's not only a technical difference re: L vs K/L lenses, that there are beacoup K/L lenses for the RB- Pro SD, and that they'll work on the RZ 67 as well. rfb
