I'm curious how many times people come across these great findings without even realising...
@aserta3 жыл бұрын
Somewhere between a lot and a little. Figure that if you don't know what they are, you'll pass them as odd rock. Sure, the more common things are easily found, like a nautilus, a tooth perhaps. But different things, like a chunk of bone...you'll see it and you wouldn't know.

I showed my gf his last video where he went into detail about how he ID'd that crab. She looked look appalled because she though those were barnacles and tossed dozens of rocks like that away for some other rock.

Hi Matvei! Hope you're doing well :) I sometimes walk back past the same place a few times and I keep finding fossils, even the different lighting shows up fossils you might have missed!

As kids living in a South Wales mining village we would find fern frond fossils everywhere on the slag heaps , mostly smaller bits as you could imagine but occasionally near complete fronds. To my now eternal shame we would often just shuffle them into the slag so they stood upright and then take turns in retreating 10-20 yards and throw stones at them until one of us broke the upright…. I wish I could go back in time and give the younger me a good clip across the ear , but in our defence they were everywhere and we had no idea of why we were doing.

That thin bone would make some very nice jewelry cabochons. The contrast between the fossilized bone and the minerals that filled in the cracks and crevices is very nice.

I'm amazed on how easy you can immediately identify the creature and also the time period of the fossil (cretaceous) ... that takes expert/talent! If I were you I'd definitely miss them all, they all just look like common rocks to me XD

I love all your videos, but this was jam-packed with so many interesting things! I was utterly distracted by the bird, which I learned (thanks Google) was a Tomtit. I love how you made him comfortable to approach and got a good shot. I'm a bird nerd😁. Then the giant concretion, which was so rewarding. Thanks so much for sharing what you do, as I learn something with each video I watch. Cheers!🙂

Niiice, Morne. Hope all is well with you. I think you might be on to something re the vert process. I also think you might be right re the verts themselves. Were they found close together? If so it might be the same animal. Also, it might pay to look for the source of the bones. If they fell into the river and were not transported very far there might be more material up in the bluff or bank. Just saying. Might be worth another sortie. Any excuse to get out in any case.

it's million year old kinder surprise! i'm curious; wouldn't it be easier to extract the fossil then glue them together? or did you want to keep it in the rock

Hi buddy I would say that one day you will find something very special.I am sure of that. I would like to clarify that by saying your crabs are amazing but perhaps a complete or near plesiosaur might be something you will discover one day if you keep your focus.I can see in you a great desire to not only explore sites that others perhaps have been to before and given some categorisation to, and perhaps a desire to prove your predecessors lacking in ambition with regards to their perceptions as to the limitations that they attribute to these locations that you don't necessarily agree with. I think that's what it's all about. Keep the open mind you have don't necessarily believe professional paleontologists or even amateurs. Be your own man follow your gut feeling. These professionals are clever people and I have a lot of respect for their analysis but they often don't have the time to search the rocks and maybe be more focused with stratigraphy than on the potential for high quality finds that people like you might reveal with focus energy and determination.

Very interesting & informative presentation. Thanks! Finding fossils is such a treat. I have found a few in northeastern Pennsylvania - little strands of coral, mini-crinoid impressions. Washed up to the surface - after millions of years - into the light.
