The tooth is what was formerly referred to as mako, (Isurus hastalis) but now it is being recognized as a white shark and is now in the genus carcharodon. They are relatively common where I'm from, and some (rarely) are found where they are transitioning from C. Hastalis to C. Carcharias (modern white shark) and have developed serrations. This is why the genus was moved from Isurus to Carcharodon.
@MamlamboFossils4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all that info Stephen! It makes sense, I've hear that the Mako shark had been moved to another genus but didn't realise that was why 😄
@stephengroff6334 жыл бұрын
@@MamlamboFossils Yeah, it's the main reason for the move, but like quite a few sharks assigning a good genus and species is quite complicated. Since most all of the species of fossil shark are named from teeth the assigned names are changed frequently as more research is done. It also doesn't help that alot of sharks and other fossil were named along time ago when the most important thing was getting naming the most species, so things were names sloppily and sometimes without reason. That's why megalodon has moved from Carcharodon to carcharocles according to some people otodus ( carcharocles is the correct genus by the way, most paleontologists I know and myself believe that megalodon has changed enough to be a different genus than otodus). side note because things were named so sloppily in the past there are actually very common fossils like worn isolated miocene dolphin vertebra kept locked up in the Smithsonian as type specimens of species, that have no scientific value and are not diagnostic of species, but were just named because they could be.

77 lbs is about my max in a backpack, but I think your a bigger than me (: . So cool. Why were the legs on that first crab with the legs sticking still attached? That rock is very telling about how they were formed. For the most part they have very little erosion. If dug out of the hillside, I say none. But yeah that green one with all the legs poking out tell me these crabs and such were encapsulated inside a globular hot mass while free floating and then cured licked inside. The kiwis plastic matrix can’t always contain the entire crab and parts stick out. The nature of brokenness in your typical bone conglomerates tells me it was a devastating cataclysm of some type. Probably cometary in nature
@doctorofart3 жыл бұрын
While molten and hot Capillary action would try its best to encapsulate the entire mass. You can see at some of the extended bumps how the material looks as if it was stretched over the bump.

I'm sure you've answered this question many times already, but, how big is the biggest crab you've found so far? Love this channel, you're the "Bob Ross" of fossil hunting. (Google him!) Edit: In response to your query in the description, I do enjoy seeing the preps in the same video.

Hahaha I love Bob, happy little trees! I've found a very nice 25kg crab concretion that I am working on at the moment. That's probably the biggest crab I have currently 😄

Would you be interested in selling some unbroken concretions?
@MamlamboFossils4 жыл бұрын
Hiya Anthony, I don't sell any of the fossils or concretions. I mostly just donate them to a local museum if they want them. One would need an export permit for each individual fossil :)
