The best moments were the Meryl Streep cameo, Sophie singing "I've been Waiting for You", and Donna and Sophie's duet at the christening. Meryl and Amanda have perfect Mother/Daughter chemistry.

I used to watch Mamma Mia on DVD with my mom when I was in my teens, and I could see what she enjoyed then. I did go rough that stage at one point when I was dunking on it just because it was apparently the “cool thing to do” when some big, snobbish online personalities (I’m sure you might have some specific ones in mind) have tried to decry it as some fort of “crime against feminist cinema” or something. It’s just a silly rom-com there to get you in a good mood during a time when everything else feels like an endurance test. Not necessarily my personal choice, but it’s one that appeals to some people. As for the sequel, haven’t seen it, and nothing thus far has motivated me to. I’m sorry that it left you in an empty downer mood, as a fan of the first one. I personally can’t imagine it doing anything for me when I’m simply impartial to the first one. If you’re in the mood for any other musicals that are good for a thoroughly upbeat time, I’ve got a few suggestions. There’s the Apple+ series Schmigadoon. And I just got started on the Apple+ movie that dropped today ‘Spirited’ featuring Ryan Reynolds, Will Farrel and Patrick Page! Both are great if you want a musical that gives you a good time through and through! Or if you don’t have Apple+, there’s still the Netflix movie ‘Tik…Tik…BOOM!’, which has been talked about far and wide amongst the musical theater-lover community. (I would most recommend looking at videos on the movie by the channel Wait in the Wings.) It’s adapted from the musical by Johnathan Larson, about his struggle to get his career off the ground before RENT. And I know you don’t like RENT, but maybe it might interest you to hear that one of his first concepts for a musical that he tried to bring to Broadway was a musical called ‘Superbia’, which is depicts an Orwellian dystopia future where peoples’ daily lives are controlled left and right by screens always dominated with commercials and social media. He never was able to bring it light, so he channelled all the devastation he felt from that into ‘Tik…Tik…BOOM!’ (Also, Lin Manuel Miranda directed the movie, which I would say is enough to make it worth viewing at least once!)

Yeah, for years I was one of those who dunked on Mamma Mia for being a nothing movie with a silly conflict and for not being "deep". I feel like I've completely flipped around on that now that I'm not focusing solely on those points. I believe I actually say the TiK Tik Boom video from Wait in the Wings (love that guy's work). Can't remember much about it other than not feeling a desire to check it out, but liked watching the video on it. I'm glad Patrick Page and Ryan Reynolds are getting work. They seem like cool dudes, and I loved Dead Pool and Hadestown/Hunchback of Notre Dame
