In this video, Dr Uma Dangi, Senior Consultant of Medical Oncology at Fortis hospital, Mulund talks about mammography and its importance. Nowadays breast cancer is most common in women and mammography is used for diagnosis and screening of breast cancer.
So what is Mammography? Mammography is nothing but an X-ray of the breast where breasts are compressed between two firm surfaces and an X-ray is captured. The compression during mammography can be painful or discomforting for some time. The doctor analyzes the X-ray films to see if there exists any calcification or a cancerous or non-cancerous lump. If any lumps are seen during the mammography, the doctors suggest further tests like a biopsy to confirm the nature of the lump and find if it’s cancerous or non-cancerous, and plan the treatment accordingly.
Mammography is recommended for women older than 40 years once a year to detect cancer in the early stage. Along with mammography, sonography is also recommended.
Mammography is an advanced diagnostic procedure but there are some limitations to mammography as well. Women of younger age are not recommended for mammography because their breasts are dense and the lumps in the breast will not be detected properly. So they are recommended for MRI. Mammography is a radiation technique, which can put women at risk of cancer.
However, the doctor tells us that mammography is an important test for women to detect breast cancer and after a certain age, women should get mammography done for screening of breast cancer as well.

तो मैमोग्राफी क्या है? मैमोग्राफी और कुछ नहीं बल्कि स्तन का एक एक्स-रे है जहां स्तनों को दो फर्म सतहों के बीच संकुचित किया जाता है और एक एक्स-रे लिया जाता है। मैमोग्राफी के दौरान संपीड़न कुछ समय के लिए दर्दनाक या असुविधाजनक हो सकता है। डॉक्टर यह देखने के लिए एक्स-रे फिल्मों का विश्लेषण करते हैं कि क्या कोई कैल्सीफिकेशन या कैंसर या गैर-कैंसरयुक्त गांठ मौजूद है। यदि मैमोग्राफी के दौरान कोई गांठ दिखाई देती है, तो डॉक्टर गांठ की प्रकृति की पुष्टि करने के लिए बायोप्सी जैसे अन्य परीक्षणों का सुझाव देते हैं और यह पता लगाते हैं कि यह कैंसर है या गैर-कैंसरयुक्त है, और उसके अनुसार उपचार की योजना बनाएं।
प्रारंभिक अवस्था में कैंसर का पता लगाने के लिए वर्ष में एक बार 40 वर्ष से अधिक उम्र की महिलाओं के लिए मैमोग्राफी की सिफारिश की जाती है। मैमोग्राफी के साथ-साथ सोनोग्राफी की भी सलाह दी जाती है।
मैमोग्राफी एक उन्नत निदान प्रक्रिया है लेकिन मैमोग्राफी की भी कुछ सीमाएँ हैं। कम उम्र की महिलाओं को मैमोग्राफी कराने की सलाह नहीं दी जाती है क्योंकि उनके स्तन घने होते हैं और स्तन में गांठ का ठीक से पता नहीं चल पाता है। इसलिए उन्हें एमआरआई कराने की सलाह दी जाती है। मैमोग्राफी एक विकिरण तकनीक है, जो महिलाओं को कैंसर के खतरे में डाल सकती है।
हालांकि, डॉक्टर हमें बताते हैं कि स्तन कैंसर का पता लगाने के लिए महिलाओं के लिए मैमोग्राफी एक महत्वपूर्ण परीक्षण है और एक निश्चित उम्र के बाद महिलाओं को स्तन कैंसर की जांच के लिए भी मैमोग्राफी करवानी चाहिए।
