the last interview is heartbreaking as even in the modern day I and so many others feel this way. The way she explains so poetically that paradise is just around the corner really struck a chord with me. How deeply unsatisfied one feels with themselves to be an outcast, and to question your own reality and the point of your own existence...

@@henryvonblumenthal7307 This is probably not possible, but just thought I'd try as I saw your comment and couldn't believe the synchronicity. I am in the process of writing a novel and found myself here as I am researching around one of my main characters - a woman in her 90s who married a man due to the times she lived in and was not able to be with the woman she loved. It might not be possible or appropriate but I would really love to find out more about her and to connect if at all possible...

That interview with Stevie is top class, incisive, neutral journalism. Oh how the BBC could learn from this today as a counter to their high-profile, self governing political, religious, economic and sociological bias range. How, in 2024, the world has changed. And thank god, for the better. Let people live their lives, with understanding and harmony

Finding many of these ‘Man Alive’ programmes an interesting reflection not only upon the mores of a past that really is ‘another country’ is so many respects, but upon a seeming decline in journalistic standards. These seem to be programmes which attempt (often successfully) to present an aspect of life in a manner which treats both subjects and viewer with respect and sympathy, leaving the viewer to draw their own conclusions. I’d prefer to watch these to much ‘modern’ programming any day of the week.

Some eyebrow raising assertions there. Lesbian relationships often have their own issues. As Camille Paglia controversially put it: "Gay men inhabit the bar scene as free radicals, competitive individualists scanning each other, preening, and scuffling for ter- ritory. Strangers can walk off the street in any country and enter the fray. Aggressive wit is an instrument of flirtation and seduction. Solitary cruising and pickups do occur among lesbians, but they are not the rule. Lesbian bars are organized in huge kinship groupings, which I identify as family regressions (the usual grass huts). Trying to break into these shifting cliques could drive you mad - unless you join one of their sports leagues. Musical beds is the name of the game. But each person sets up the next affair before she breaks off the last, so there is intricate overlapping, producing endless amounts of what Alison Maddcx calls, with exasperation, "lesbian drama from hell." Lushly eroticized push-pull emotion, rather than genital sexuality, is the real heart of lesbianism. It's All About Mom."

It's really sad to hear the mindsets of some of the men and women of that time period ! To actually have convinced yourself that you couldn't have long term love/relationships because of fear or repercussions? I guess it's not so unimaginable when society was torturing them mentally and physically ! not ot mention the medical profession with their lobotomies and electric shock treatments and psychiatric tortures! Not to forget the families and religious monsters of the time...

when i was a young girl in the 70s,it was always the same,the lads in the local pub would hear that some girl was a lesbian and it would be all,i wouldnt mind seeing that etc,but if it was a gay man,then it was always oh look a woofter or somthing more horrible,you still see and hear the same today,although people are more accepting in general,you will always have people who believe being gay means your kids are not safe,which is simply rubbish,,i have a gay relation,he has been with his partner for over 35 years now,and a lesbian cousin who married her girlfreind,4 years ago,they have now adopted a baby,im really glad its better today for people to be open,but at the same time i do not like the sexualization of young kids,teaching sex to five year olds should not be alllowed,ive heard they are planning on teaching 7 year olds about gay/lesbian and oral and anal sex,i do not think it right to teach any child about any kind of sex until lat least the age of 11 minimum,and i mean any kind of sex,kids should be allowed to be kids as long as they can,ive seen young parents,accepting their 5 year old daughters dressing like mini teenagers and dancing in a sexual manner,like their mothers watch on tv from popstars etc,its so wrong20 years ago little girls played with dolls until at least 10 or 11,now by the age of 8 many think they need makeup and grown up stuff,so although the world has changed for the better in regards to sexual orientation,it has not changed for the better with the little children
@jenniferh6813

i disagree with your opinion about when sex education shoud be taught. 11 is far too late. by then most children will already wonder about it and will probably get information - probably incorrect - from from friends or the internet. (eg When I was about 9, my friend, whose mother had presumably had a Caesarean [C-section] told me that a woman had to be cut open to have a baby. When my grandmother's periods started ,from the vague information her mother gave her, she thought that if she got too close to a boy, she'd get pregnant. ) I was determined that for my own children it would be different and that I'd tell my children the facts before they were old enough to find The Talk embarrassing. So I old them the basics of sex, in an age-appropriate manner, at a very early age. An age when everything in life is new and fascinating, and they simply accepted it happily, as yet another interesting bit of information about life. They presumably ignored what they didn't understand and always seemed to be comfortable asking relevant questions later. I think this approach is much healthier, and, in fact, much easier. By the time one's children are 11 and are approaching adolescence, or are in the throes of it, they will get hot under the collar talking to their parents about sex and will probably shy away. As indeed I myself did. Thus remaining in ignorance about certain things for years. :-( I find that very sad.

To some degree, but outside the major cities in the UK I think a lot of those attitudes still prevail. A former girlfriend's mother from the Shires was disgusted at the thought that her daughter may have had lesbian leanings.
@anonUK

It wasn't as bad for lesbians though, compared with gays. For a start, no-one thought they were "pederasts", nor were the police interested in women getting it together. Also, people don't usually have the same visceral reaction to lesbian sex that they do to sex between men. There was plenty of moral condemnation, but the risk of physical disgust isn't the same.
@kaesmith2893
@kaesmith2893 7 жыл бұрын
anonUK that's a difficult comparison. In the ways you mention yes, however you have the burden of sexism from society let alone say if you're a lesbian woman of colour and dealing with racism (similarly ableism if you're disabled). It's never necessarily an easy fit anyway.

I have much older friends who are gay and have worked with older gay men who grew up gay in the 60s and they used to tell me the police knew which were the gay bars and it was not unusual for gays (men) to be beaten up on the way home from a gay bar by the police.
