A few years ago here in Seattle an Alaska Airlines baggage handler at SeaTac stole a plane and took it on a joyride around the Puget Sound area. He didn’t know how to land the plane and he even managed to do a barrel roll, which was impressive for someone who had no flight experience other than video games that had flight simulation. He crashed the plane into a lightly populated island off Puget Sound (Ketron Island). He was going through some mental health issues and a divorce if I recall correctly. It was a sad that he felt he had no choice but to end his life. SeaTac has since added extra security measures when planes are on the ground being worked on by ground crews. The tower did a great job trying to talk him down. His name was Richard Russell aka Sky King.

The first thing I thought was Cody reminds me of a mental health client I had a few years ago. He had schizophrenia and was on medication that helped with his delusions, but medication compliance is always an issue with these cases. And then mixing other drugs with anti-psychotics is a whole other issue. He also had a major cigarette addiction and would attack random people on the street and steal their cigarettes.

The way they speak to Cody is deplorable.i mean the only person who spoke to him is the guy with the body cam. Also I don't believe in that suicide by cop , because that's just something cops say. There is no diagnosis in the dsm 5 for "suicide by cop". The fact they knew Cody was on psych meds and they still acted like this. Also his prior dwi the cops did not know before or during the incident. That's a backward logic law enforcement and KZbin channels like Code Blue use to justify illegal and unnecessary force. It's literally a 6-hanger private airport. Anyone who wants to fly commercial has to go up to Minneapolis for a public airport. You can't have 18 TSA agents at every private airport in the country. He drove thru a gate...that's more to keep planes from getting out than people from getting in.

And if you notice it had wheel chalks, those big triangular rubber things in front and behind every wheel. So he would have really needed to do some crazy full power risky stuff if its even possible to drive over those from a dead stop.

I suppose pole barriers should be placed at the gates. They can be removed with a key when someone needs to use the gate, otherwise those things will legit stop a dump truck before anyone drives through them. Cheap too

The reason why they think the door can only be opened once is because its ran by the auxiliary hydraulic system and without that being turned on eventually the aux will no longer have enough pressure in the lines to open it. The APU or GPU would have to be running to turn on the auxiliary system because the battery wont have enough juice to run the aux pump. The door can still be opened manually but with no pressure in the system it will drop like a rock and damage a very expensive door plus risk of injury to whoever is opening it. The switch the guy is holding onto does not have to be held to keep the door open but holding the switch down will override the computer and take priority preventing Cody from using the door safety and door close switches inside of the cockpit. Also on the G5 they could open the baggage door and climb through it because theres an additional door that leads to the inside of the cabin. So they could've cornered him but my guess the ground staff isnt that familiar with the aircraft.

Just a couple observations….. 1) I think Cody is primarily a mental health issue. He may be on drugs but I think the main issue here is psychiatric 2) there was essentially 0 danger of him starting the aircraft and moving under its own power. He’d have to a) know how to start the APU, b) know how to start the engines and c) remove the wheel chocks. The plane wasn’t going anywhere

Totally concur. Self medicating is on the rise due to stress on healthcare (in the UK) and lack of affordable access to it (US). I self medicated with codeine for anxiety for years without realising that's what I was doing. Finally seen a doc and got diagnosed but taking that step can be an uphill battle in itself.

I remember seeing the plane flying low around the Puget Sound right after it took off. The guy was experiencing some mental health issues. The control tower did their best to try to explain how to land the plane,but Richard aka Sky King had one goal in mind, to crash the plane in an uninhabited area. The fact he was able to complete a barrel roll and not lose consciousness is impressive for someone who had never flown a plane before. It was such a sad story.

It was in Seattle that the man stole the plane. He worked at the airport. He flew the plane then crashed it in some wooded area. During his flying he was incontact with the tower. He sounded such a nice man. Obviously there was some mental health issues.

I just listened to the dialogue between him and the tower. Sad but dude did a total flip with that plane!
