I get it. I was a gutter drunk alcoholic for 25 years plus. Went to work and drove drunk every day. Lost more jobs than I can count. Went to jail more times than I can remember. Been sober 15yrs, but usually, a single situation is not enough to convince you to get help. It's often a series of piss poor decisions/consequences. I wish her well. Hopefully, this will be her last "rock bottom."

@@User_92020 Yes...The fired elementary school teacher, unfortunately, showed up intoxicated in court (she was there to answer the allegation that lead to her arrest for public intoxication at the elementary school). The former teacher was arrested at the elementary school for public intoxication after she dragged the lies on and on with the principal, school superintendent, and the police officers about drinking in her classroom. The superintendent offered to get the teacher's phone from her classroom to call someone to pick her up from work. The superintendent found a large plastic cup with wine residue when he went to her classroom to get her phone. To make matters worst, the former teacher wiped the rim of the plastic cup that she claimed that she used to drink wine the previous day. On that point, let's get something straight about her story about drinking from that found cup the day before on her way to school (she admitted to a DUI/DWI with that statement). If the former teacher did what she claimed with the drinking, she would not have brought that cup to her classroom and exposed herself in this way. No way. I could tell when she worried about what would happen to continuing to teach when the superintendent said that he would recommend her firing. The teacher was given a chance to have her husband or someone else pick her up from work. She could not drink home herself, since she would be arrested for DUI/DWI. The breathalyzer scanned her at .24 -- 3 times the .08 legal limit. The former teacher declined call her husband or anyone to come get her from the school. Law and Crime on YT covered this story at both the elementary school and in court after the former teacher's arrest. Headline from a TV news report: Third grade teacher previously arrested for public intoxication, arrested again on same charge in the Payne County courthouse

I teach in a public school. Last year when I started working at this particular district, I was shocked they did NOT require a drug test to get hired. After a year of dealing with crappy parents and all that comes with teaching in a public district, I realized that if the district did drug test there would be very few teachers who would test clean. It’s a hard job dealing with the kids and their parent’s BS all day.

This was literally me. Mind you I’m not a teacher, but still. I’d consistently buy between 6-10 of those mini bottles at a time (sometimes every day) and I’d hide them in the zipper of my purse. I’d get over the hangover from the previous night, and when I “felt better”, cracked one open mid day through my shift and by the time I left I was already very well buzzed. Could hide it for a bit, but because I worked with my brother, he already knew my issues with it and I’m sure knew every time. I’ve been sober almost 5 months. had a teacher teach our 9th grade math class. he came in drunk most days - and he would handmake all of the geometry questions - many of the lines didn't complete the angles, so their was no solution since it wasn't a finished shape. we laughed about it, but he fell over one day and knocked over the projector, smashing it pretty good. It was his last year teaching. The kids came together and basically agreed to not rat him out for it so he didn't lose his pension (and essentially ruin his retirement). I'm surprised not one kid told on him - some people just have some issues - maybe he was celebrating early... who knows.

My theories as to why she won't leave the building are as follows: 1. She's hoping to be given the opportunity to leave the room in order to go hide something else. 2. The benzo and alcohol combination she's currently under has drastically impaired her ability to process what's happening and her perception of time. 3. The school is her safe place and so she is staying as long as possible maybe hoping to change someone's mind in some way shape form. 4. She wasn’t just drunk at school, she was about to drive home, through a school zone, and to her home which didn’t sound like it was in the same place as the school ( I’m from the uk so I don’t know for sure) there would be other kids coming out of school, different schools along the route so children along the pavements ( sidewalks). She put lots of children, teens and adults at risk. By the very fact she didn’t get out of there as quickly as possible, make up her mind about a friend, husband or Uber collecting her before she got arrested, showed her inability to make quick, concise safe decisions. Very sad, I have a friend who is an alcoholic, clean 20 years, he sees now what he was like then, but couldn’t see it at the time. I hope she gets help, I hope people are kind to her even if they truthful in their opinions, I hope she takes responsibility for her actions and seeks help.

I wouldn't drive when drunk, and I'm not talking about pissed drunk but I've had a glass of wine or two before going on a date, a job interview, MA thesis defense, first couple days at work when anxiety kicked in (worked as a hotel receptionist before), and also my first week at college when I first started teaching. I'm not an alcoholic, I drink maybe a couple times a year, and people couldn't tell I was drunk when I had some drinks to loosen up a bit. Not saying it's the best thing to do, later in my life I learned to cope with stress and face the situation better without it. But in this comment section people speak as if it is a heinous crime. It is probably within the school's discretion (or the officer's) whether to charge it, but I do think being drunk as a classroom teacher could be prosecuted as child endangerment--since you would be impairing your own faculties necessary to ensure the children's safety. And it seems that in most states, that is a felony.

As a mother this makes me angry but as a human I feel bad for her struggles. My ex-husband was an alcoholic. He wouldn't drink at work for the longest time and would come home with the shakes and very sick but eventually he couldn't wait until after work. He was a welder and would drink at work and ware his helmet so no one would smell it on his breath. Needless to say he eventually lost his job, I left him and he ended up living on the streets. He's now sober after attending at least six rehabs and several hospitalizations, one time being put on life support. He's made allot of progress but I'm surprised he's still alive, it was so bad. It's a horrible way to live.

It's possible, although at least in my experience with my father it could also just be shame. At least to me, it seems as if functional alcoholics care a lot about being discovered because it's part of how they rationalize their illness. If nobody knows they're an alcoholic, then they don't have to acknowledge it. It's part of why she denies it so hard, it's not just that she would lose her job, it's that she would be exposed. That being said, the reasons for alcoholism are as variable as alcoholics.

I am a recovering alcoholic. I quit drinking in 2006. I believe that addicts need to find their bottom and reach it before they will be willing to quit alcohol or other addicting drugs. Mine was family problems, puking all of the time, stomach problems and needing to drink all day to feel "normal". Sometimes an intervention can be done to raise the bottom artificially but that only works if the addict doesn't have the means to care for him/herself. Interventions don't usually work on millionaires with a five or six figure net monthly income.

I’m retired military law enforcement and was a breathalyzer operator in the state of Indiana. During lab time at breathalyzer school and in the field, we learned that people are way different in how alcohol affects their speech, balance, mannerisms, etc. She was an extreme example that proves the point. Btw, the .015%/hour metabolization rate out of the blood is a constant regardless of body size, gender, ethnicity or how much alcohol was consumed. We would normally run two tests 30 minutes apart and use the .015%/hour calculation to extrapolate back to the time of the traffic stop to determine BAC at the time of the stop. If it indicated they were below the legal limit at the time of the stop, we would release the driver to a responsible adult. If they were a service member, that would be someone in their leadership and you could bet they would be sent to alcohol treatment. This was tough to watch, but I hope this incident is a catalyst for her to get help.

We were allowed to leave the school during lunch break (very common here in small towns in Ireland) and we would see him at the pub having a few pints before he went back to the school. His wife and daughter had been killed in a car crash like a decade prior so it was excused. He should have gotten help. But I don't know if having 'cops' come in, would have helped anyone. My sister died from alcoholism related complications a year ago this past Thanksgiving. She had 20 years of sobriety and then she relapsed. The alcohol took her out within a year. The 20 years she had stopped drinking, the disease just sat patiently waiting and she picked up right where she left off. She hid it from us. We didn’t know until she was in a coma. I have 15 years of recovery from RX drug addiction. My sister was a big part of why I got into AA meetings even though I didn’t drink. I prefer them to NA meetings. I don’t take my recovery for granted. I saw this video the other day and it makes me sad, but it also made me mad. The way she acted when she refused to allow them to call someone. It's just so fucked how addiction warps your perspective, your priorities and your integrity. Really sad to see.

This was my experience. For me, the fear of seeking help, admitting to my lies, and dealing with all the shame was scarier than continuing the addiction and the dangers associated with it. I'm fortunate that my partner was extremely supportive and, most importantly, didn't make me feel judged. It's extremely difficult to deal with addiction without support, and I really feel for this woman.

After some of the stories I’ve heard from her and other teachers, I’d probably be slipping Tito’s in my coffee and every other drink throughout the day just to deal with the BS they have to put up with. I swear, the good teachers out there that actually care 100% aren’t paid enough for the crap they deal with on a daily basis. Can you imagine going to your corporate job and and paying to make copies or paying for supplies out of your own pocket bc there’s a limit on the amount of copy paper you can use??? Meanwhile, there’s a room somewhere in the school full of overpriced textbooks that the school doesn’t even use. All of this goes on and some morons that have never even taught kids or spent time in a classroom are getting paid big money to come up with BS curriculum and teaching strategies that you have to follow that are completely worthless, while you watch kids fall further and further behind? It’s the definition of insanity. I’m surprised all teachers aren’t alcoholics at this point.

This reminds me of my first experience with an actual alcholic. I was working at a call center and had a floor manager that I really liked and got along with due to a shared love of punk, metal and similar tastes in books and movies. He was also not an asshole about his job in regards to pushing people in regards to targets or docking people for little things that made them lose bonuses. He was also an all day drinker. There was one only one guy in our department who had a car. He was a very nice and meek young guy from India who desperately wanted fit in. This manager ended up manipulating the kid into doing daily OJ and vodka runs for him. I worked there for a little over a year and just towards the end of my time there our team lead ended up catching on and he got fired, which sucked for the employees because the guy who replaced him was a complete asshole. The kind of manager that would nitpick when doing call monitoring and seemed to enjoy docking his employees in the call monitoring process. Thankfully the story has a happy ending, my former manager used that as a wake up call. He got sober and has been so for 12 years nows. If youre struggling with any sort of substance abuse problem know that recovery is possible.

Thank you Bruce, for mentioning that a person can die from withdrawals. It astounds me that this isn't common knowledge and should be taught in schools. I had no idea when, towards the end of my drinking 'career' , I had to abstain while on a trip for several days. On day 3, I had a grand mol seizure. Fortunately, I was in the right place at the right time and received immediate medical care. After running what seemed to be every test known to man and finding no cause, I finally said to the doctor "I'm a raging alcoholic and havent had a drink in a few days". I don't know what possessed me to share that, but that explained it. PLEASE don't go cold turkey and try to detox on your own. No matter if you're a binge drinker or a round the clock drinker, just be honest with your dr about absolutely everything and they will help. Dying is worse than embarrassment. You don't necessarily have to check into a hospital; depending on your circumstances, your Dr should be able to give you a prescription for home detox. Welcome home, Bruce and congrats on 1 million ‼️🎉

My ex was an alcoholic and user of other substances. I remember the exact moment I had enough. I woke up from being sick and the bathroom had feces in it bc he drank until he crapped himself while he was watching the kids. I walked past the bathroom and saw two full 1.75L bottle of an alcohol I don't even like and had not even known existed completely empty sitting on the washing machine. I asked what happened. He told me that I CRAPPED HIS PANTS, drank two entire bottles of liquor I didn't like or know existed, took a shower after doing a poor job cleaning up the bathroom after crapping his pants, magically dried myself off including my long hair, and crawled back into bed to rest, and I didn't remember it because of the alcohol. At that point I knew he had no accountability and was never going to "work on himself" and I simply walked away, but that was the absolute tipping point of "You really expect me to believe you? The lies are our entire relationship and I am not interested in caring for two kids under 10 and an alcoholic who can't even stand up on his own and that is the own things that stops him from drinking." I was done. He had a baby with his new gf before we were even divorced and is now a "good Christian" who has violated court orders and even state laws too many times to count. She can have him as major problems don't just disappear and he still blames me for his drinking and before me he blamed his mother. No matter what it's not his fault.

As his kid I really benefited from that choice the school gave to him. It gave him both the motivation and the route out of his situation.

That was what I hoped for her. But it seemed like the principle or whoever he is, wasn't having it. However, I think her not being truthful played a big part. I guess I give more mercy because I was given much mercy; pending the situation.

@@coralinebaksteen9791exactly! 2 situations: A kid takes her drink and ends up in a hospital. - or - There is a school shooter, and she is in charge of those children's lives. Being drunk, she doesn't react as fast or makes mistakes in reacting, and some kids get hurt or killed. Now, for all of those people who are talking about giving second chances ... Do you think the public is going to be sympathetic to a school district or to a police force that allows someone who was found drinking on the job, confessed to driving drunk, tampered with evidence, had open liquor in the classroom, and had just blown a 0.24 on a breathalizer while IN school... AND they knowingly put that person in charge of YOUR CHILDREN? What do you think all of those "sympathetic" "give her another chance" people will be doing then? I'm a teacher. I could have been a colleague. I could have had to count on her to help in an emergency or to help protect my students and my life. I'm a parent. My child could have been in that class with the open liquor and the drunk teacher when an emergency came up. And I say.... arrest her, and fire her. No question (considering the situation we see here).

What about the children that were charged to her care? What about the innocent people who were driving on the road at the same time she chose to DUI? What about her husband who obviously seems to hold her accountable for her drunkenness? What about their children? Hope this helps. 😉

I was a cop for almost 4 decades. He’s being short with her because ( in my opinion) 1.he is a school resource officer and feels protective of the kids and staff at this school, and this lady drove there drunk, and likely sat in the classroom drinking. That’s irk you. 2. He is familiar with the addict shenanigans which he has properly predicted are coming-stalling, bargaining , dragging things out. He is trying to get her TF out of there, without arresting her. Maybe he really doesn’t want to arrest her and embarrass her like that. Maybe he is really worried about the kids being messed up over it. Seems like they all are, it’s probably a small place and everyone knows each other. 3.He wants to get things moving before she loses her shit. I stood around a workplace one day for 5 hours as some employers tried to fire a very long- term employee who had made some threats when told she was being fired. It ended up with me rassling an old woman to the ground after she stabbed me with an ink pen and tried to bite my balls ( I got my hand in place in time and she bit my hand and her teeth flew out hilariously then she stabbed me in the neck). People do wild shit in extremis and whilst intoxicated. The longer they linger around a school, tge worse the potential outcome.

Ohmygosh! First of all thank you for your service. Cops are not paid nearly enough in my opinion. Secondly I'm torn between being horrified by that story and fighting the urge to giggle 🤭 please forgive me I'm sure it was awful to experience that with that old lady but you painted such a visual picture that I couldn't help myself. You should think about writing a book. You're that good. ❤❤❤

Very high functioning alcoholic…I could barely tell she was intoxicated until she started to fake cry and beg, including the childish “I don’t want to”, and “what made you so mad at me??” when it was so blatantly clear what made the cop mad 😂. Seriously though, I hope she gets the help she desperately needs.
