I bought a 1997 Nissan Primera 2.0i SLX (SR20) with a few issues. Here I talk a bit more about it, the British Touring Car Championship successes, the hatchbacks exported to Japan and the Infiniti G20 which was how the Primera P11 was sold in the USA. I also drive it quite quickly. What I entirely do not do is replace the leaking water pump.
Delightful HubNut goodies can be purchased at hubnut.org where you'll also find support options.
Or, support HubNut at / hubnut or via Channel memberships: / @hubnut
Don't forget to like the video if you like it, and share with your friends if you really like it! Thank you all.

Hi Ian, I did offer to change the water pump, fan resistor and service the Primera for you free of charge prior to delivery, but you said you wanted to do the jobs yourself as it would make good video content. I wanted to provide you with a reliable car you and your family could use straight away. Never mind, I am sure your garage will do a good job and I am glad you are enjoying driving it.

I'm surprised about your concern about gelling diesel. In a normal winter, the part of Canada where I live sees the occasional -30c, but we have winterized diesel, so gelling is never a concern. Certainly my car always starts easily even at those temps.

@@CaptHollister we have also winter diesel, but if there's summer diesel left in your tank before you fill it up with winter one and those two different diesel don't mix up so well and if your fuel filter have also that summer diesel it can bloked up. I’m loving the primera Ian. I had a 2.0 P11 about 9 years ago and it was one of the finest handling cars I ever had, even though it was on nasty 14” tyres. The new Nissan's have Renault links that could explain the reliability issues. The electrics are always the downside on any Nissan under the Renault ownership.
@Charlie_Crown
@Charlie_Crown 3 жыл бұрын
@@bentullett6068 Well known for it, rubbish electrics, but thats not the only issue. If you've ever test driven a more modern Nissan, say over at least the last ten years or so, they are not nearly as solid a car, they just lack the quality of say a Toyota for instance, and definitely a lot of cost cutting corners taken place there. I like Japanese cars, great reliability, but out of all of them, Nissan would now be bottom of the list for me, the modern ones that is.

A wise job farming out work, sometimes you just don’t seem interested and feel like it. I just farmed out a job on the landy that I’d have relished if it was sunny/dry and I was younger 😂 nowadays I choose what I want to do based on my time, I’m more interested in having fun on my days off work than getting fed up at a car. Still do stuff when there’s no pressure on but if I need to fix a car and I don’t want to I farm it.

Nice to see you'll get a full service from the farming-out as well. The little button on the end of the wiper stalk has 3 functions it can make the right-hand LCD digits display: current time in hr-min (default when it's around 5deg C or above); outside temperature (which takes precedence when it's really cold!); and current date in DD:MM form. That's the one you thought was another time setting, and so looks to be about a month and a half out! I vaguely remember that you can hold and then click-press that stalk-end to change the setting of time and/ or date. Really happy memories in your videos of my late wife's R-reg 1997 P11 1.6SLX, which came brand-new from the Nissan dealership down the road from West End; the smaller engine had less of a mid-range flat spot than yours.

Well done, Ian. My former boss had an Infiniti G20 with auto box. Generally a nice car to drive, and quite luxurious. He got 300,000 miles out of it before rust killed it. I will never forget us going to collect as 78 Mercury Grand Marquis saloon. A giant of a car with a 6.5 litre engine. It was about 2½ hours each way. Coming back to the city, I didn't realize the speedometer in the Marquis was wildly pessimistic. I thought I was doing the speed limit of 80 km/h. I was really doing slightly over the 100 mark. When we got to his house, I was as relaxed as can be. The old boat had been loafing along. The boss was frazzled from trying to keep up with me. The little 2 litre was working because most of the trip was on roads not unlike those in this video.

I would think if you aren't going to do a service on the primera the likelihood of the two hulks at the back of the garage becoming roadworthy are less than zero. it's different machines for different purposes though, it makes sense to farm out the work on the daily driver family car that's not going to be part of the fleet for that long if it means more time to do work on the ones that have a long term future, and I suspect do better in terms of views and engagement (because being able to make money to keep doing it is also important). Don't know where that leaves the other two, but there's more content potential in them than there is in routine service on a Nissan, it's not like something needs to be done to them right away.

I've driven very HubNutty cars my whole life, so under 10 second (to 0-100 km/h, 62 miles/h) cars are absolute rockets. I fondly remember a 1993 Honda Accord with a 2 litre engine, that was such a sweet ride. Overtaking wasn't a chore in that one.

The best cars are the ones that look boring but drive really well, great for embarrassing people (mainly chavs in cars with stupid body kits) at traffic lights. As for tax my Sister drove for about a month without TAX when she got her car because we'd forgotten about the TAX changes, luckily it's only £30 a year so not costly to rectify. It still annoys me that TAX is so expensive for any older car above 1.4L(?), it was over £200 for my Grans 1.6 Focus the same as a big gas guzzler of the same age. A standard small family car should be cheap to insure.

1.5 litres, I think. Unless they've changed it. But zero tax if older than about 1979 now :-)

Really good cars and engines, I had the kind of similar 1.4 lx sunny hatchback and it was a brilliant car brought for around the same as you £400ish and owned for 4+ years with no problems, just keep on top of oil changes at least six monthly and it will be fine.

Here’s a suggestion for you Ian. If I were you I would get rid of those two old examples of Eastern promise and with the room created I’d get hold of one of those lifting devices which get the entire car a couple of feet off the ground. I think you could probably get hold of one for around £500 which appears to be around the price you usually pay for another project car. There’s enough height in the unit to allow for one and the difference it would make would be enormous I think. I only wish I’d got room for one in my garage.

@@2760ade You’re perhaps too young to remember the old Fry’s adverts for their Turkish Delight chocolate bars, the tag line was “full of Eastern promise” so as I believe the Oltcit was built in Turkey I was being a little sarcastic.

@@malcolmherbert5127 I do remember the ads, I'm 56! Loved those chocolate bars, (wonder if Fry's still make them!) but they didn't come pre-rusted and with charred wiring!😂 I did guess you were being somewhat sarcastic! I think you are right that he should get rid of them, they are wasting valuable space, and there is no way, in my honest opinion, that he has the facilities or expertise necessary to bring them back to life. (I would love to be wrong though.....)

I would like to get your impression on the Citroen Xantia Activa suspension testing it on this very same road... Will you be able to get a hold on one of these tremedously nice cars that can be compared directly with the primera you own now... Best would be the 2L Turbo CT Xantia Activa that has a wonderful motor with 147 HP and claimed to be specially good with Constant Tork (CT) over the whole spread of the engine revs.

Far too many kids stuck to screens learning when it should be a mix of creative practical lessons and basic engineering. I say this as a grammar school educated lad with a few degrees in my hat. Some of my peers are doctors/scientists but haven't got a clue which end of the spanner to hold.

I think most of us are feeling like you are mate, its this lockdown, you get so used to not doing things so its hard work to find motivation, its not as if a car must be fixed today because we need to be somewhere tomorrow, so in the back of our minds it can be put off its not that important at the moment.
