How long will that company be solvent if it does that, then what of the people that did pay for full coverage when the insurance company cant pay them for a loss cause the company ran out of money? In 2019 when it was obvious my stepmother had alzheimers/dementia, and went into an assisted living facility, I submitted a claim. They denied it because she wasn't in a "nursing home." Several years later, she got worse and went into a higher care facility, I submitted another claim. I’m a retired RN and very familiar with the multiple ways insurance companies can let people down when they need help the most. Some years ago, my daughter asked if I had considered getting long term care insurance. I told her yes, I had considered it and no, I wasn’t going to waste my money on the stiff premiums. For one thing, no matter how stable an insurance company might be at the time of signing up for a policy, there’s no guarantee the company will still be in business when an insured customer needs the money. Second, as with the gentleman in this video, the company might still exist but the terms of the policy might not cover a person’s particular situation and needs. I deliberately saved enough money during my working years to more than cover the difference between long term care costs and my income from social security and annuities. I’m not rich, but I was careful with savings and investments. At least I’m not flushing money down the toilet by paying monthly premiums towards care that I may never need, should I be lucky enough to pass away before I ever reach the nursing home stage.
@raygunsforronnie84728 күн бұрын
My mom watched her Auntie deplete her savings by paying for nursing home care. Other than the 80 acres of farm land she had, Auntie was basically bankrupt when she died. Mom bought a long term care policy (late in life, too) because of this. Mom ended up in a nursing home, first for medical convalescence and then dementia, staying a little over 2 years before passing. In settling her estate I calculated that she would have needed to live several more months before her nursing home bills would have exceeded her premiums. She was about 4 months from breaking even if she'd paid cash for her care. We don't know how long we or our loved ones might need skilled nursing care, and insurance is a form of gamble - they bet we won't use much or any of the benefit, while we bet that life span benefits will exceed the premiums.

Pretty much this. I remember back in my poor college days I was living in a trailer park. Got a knock at the door and a insurance salesman was making rounds. Offered a medical insurance policy that would pay out if you were out of work if you got sick. The cost of the insurance each month wasn't that much. The amount payed out would have been about a days salary for me at the time. So I got the insurance. Then I started reading the fine print. I'd have to go to the doctor. Be diagnosed with something that would get me a doctor's note from work, and then go back a second time to confirm that I was better. Only then would I be able to file a claim. Neither doctor's visit would have been covered and would be out of pocket. Unless I was out for a week or more, there was no way I would make any money on this insurance plan. And they knew it. This was decades ago. Almost 30 years. So I suspect these types of plans don't exist any more. Hell, Covid alone would probably have wiped these insurance companies out.

My mom bought a $2000 end value life insurance from JC Penny subsidiary many years ago, paying monthly. When she had medical complications I took over a lot of her finances. When I discovered this automatic deduction, I figured out she had paid into the account close to $2200 and told her that. Before I could do anything, a few days later she called and cancelled the account. My problem with the company (Stonebridge, I think was the name) was why wasn't there an automatic stoppage of premiums when the max payout was reached? Not that it would have helped at that time or when she died, but it would have made sense. I guess business is business and humanity stops where the business begins.

I saw this with my parents. My dad got a long-term care policy and paid on it for decades. Yes, the premiums were very low because he got it early, but by the time they actually could have used it there were so many technicalities and stipulations and the reality was it was easier to care for our mom through other means than what the policy would have covered. If you're buying insurance unless it is one of the big companies that will still be around you're not likely to get use out of it decades later because they could be bought and sold. Probably also another reason to switch simple insurance like auto and homeowner's every 5 years too, so that you know it is up to date for your needs as well as competitively priced.

She told me she worked for my insurance company and she had some information for me. She said that things weren’t right with my account. Then she said she was going to loose her job for telling clients this information. Then she said she would call later she had to think about it. She never called back. She sounded very distressed when she called. Really weird. When I bought that policy I was 22 years old. I was told it would mature and I could get my money out if I wanted. It was never to expire. It was guaranteed no less than 4% interest. All that changed somewhere along the way without my concert or knowledge. I think it was $100,000 minimum I should have had. I never pursued any legal action because I didn’t want to lose any more money should it not pan out for me. Terry

Back in 2020 when everybody stopped driving to work and claims fell, we got a second dividend check.
