I had a serious back injury and short term disability kept asking for more information and harassing me so much that I ended up with medication to help me deal with it. Long term disability that I paid 100% for through work for 14 years called me and he started harassing me and I just told him if you’re just going to harass me like the short term disability did don’t call me back! It took me applying to disability three times, two lawyers without an income for five years with a three inch file of medical bills, procedures and prescriptions later and living on my couch on a heating pad with non stop pain!

If the provisions of the policy dont allow payment, why should he be paid? If the company pays out to people who do not meet the requirements of the policy, then there wont be money available to pay policy holders that do meet the requirement to be paid. Should you auto insurance pay to replace your wrecked car if you didnt buy full coverage to replace a wrecked car? How long will that company be solvent if it does that, then what of the people that did pay for full coverage when the insurance company cant pay them for a loss cause the company ran out of money? There is no mention of fraud here, this is about limitations of the policy. The old man it appears may collect if he goes to a rest home with a 24 hour on staff nurse, as per the policy provision.

They probably would if it weren't for the kickbacks, they would deny they get if ever asked. Insurance is ALL about profits, and truthfully has nothing to do with honestly paying claims to those paying premiums faithfully. I believe one of the prerequisites for working in the insurance business, is that you have to leave any integrity/empathy you might have had at the door, before you start working. They have a license to rob people, and it's some how legal...well not morally legal, it costs insurance companies money to make it legal, no doubt.

@bobloblaw9679 Statistics show that 95% of people retire to a lifestyle that is less than which they had been accustomed, so "yes", no non-priviliged person can save appropriately. Part of that failure is because of "the system", part of that is just reality, and the other part is human nature. Nobody is living frugally and saving money. If one lives in a frugal fashion, then they are broke, and those that accumulate assets greater than their needs are the ones controlling the money and thus pay themselves more than they would make if they weren't controlling the money.

My dad and stepmother bought long term care insurance sometime before 2005. I know because my dad passed away in 2005 and it was before that. In 2019 when it was obvious my stepmother had alzheimers/dementia, and went into an assisted living facility, I submitted a claim. They denied it because she wasn't in a "nursing home." Several years later, she got worse and went into a higher care facility, I submitted another claim. They finally approved it, but it took so long that she passed away about a month before they were to start paying. She paid the premiums for that insurance for probably about 20 years. Worthless.

I know because I had to pick up the other 50% for my grandfather; not cheap, but impossible without the VA, and I owed it to my grandfather because he was the only one in the family who didn't turn his back on me, when I returned from Iraq.

I’m a retired RN and very familiar with the multiple ways insurance companies can let people down when they need help the most. Some years ago, my daughter asked if I had considered getting long term care insurance. I told her yes, I had considered it and no, I wasn’t going to waste my money on the stiff premiums. For one thing, no matter how stable an insurance company might be at the time of signing up for a policy, there’s no guarantee the company will still be in business when an insured customer needs the money. Second, as with the gentleman in this video, the company might still exist but the terms of the policy might not cover a person’s particular situation and needs. I deliberately saved enough money during my working years to more than cover the difference between long term care costs and my income from social security and annuities. I’m not rich, but I was careful with savings and investments. At least I’m not flushing money down the toilet by paying monthly premiums towards care that I may never need, should I be lucky enough to pass away before I ever reach the nursing home stage.
@raygunsforronnie847
@raygunsforronnie847 28 күн бұрын
My mom watched her Auntie deplete her savings by paying for nursing home care. Other than the 80 acres of farm land she had, Auntie was basically bankrupt when she died. Mom bought a long term care policy (late in life, too) because of this. Mom ended up in a nursing home, first for medical convalescence and then dementia, staying a little over 2 years before passing. In settling her estate I calculated that she would have needed to live several more months before her nursing home bills would have exceeded her premiums. She was about 4 months from breaking even if she'd paid cash for her care. We don't know how long we or our loved ones might need skilled nursing care, and insurance is a form of gamble - they bet we won't use much or any of the benefit, while we bet that life span benefits will exceed the premiums.

I got denied, because of the age of the roof. Roof still had life and I'm only asking for to cover the repair not the whole roof. So I just drop that insurance company and just paid for my roof repair in cash. I now don't have home owner insurance. I have a very large emergency fund to cover experience now. Instead paying the insurance company I put it in a emergency fund. At least I don't have to wait for a claim, which takes way to long. I can just fix and repair any damages done that day with no hassles or headaches. No regrets doing so. Insurance companies are just scams.

Pretty much this. I remember back in my poor college days I was living in a trailer park. Got a knock at the door and a insurance salesman was making rounds. Offered a medical insurance policy that would pay out if you were out of work if you got sick. The cost of the insurance each month wasn't that much. The amount payed out would have been about a days salary for me at the time. So I got the insurance. Then I started reading the fine print. I'd have to go to the doctor. Be diagnosed with something that would get me a doctor's note from work, and then go back a second time to confirm that I was better. Only then would I be able to file a claim. Neither doctor's visit would have been covered and would be out of pocket. Unless I was out for a week or more, there was no way I would make any money on this insurance plan. And they knew it. This was decades ago. Almost 30 years. So I suspect these types of plans don't exist any more. Hell, Covid alone would probably have wiped these insurance companies out.

My mom bought a $2000 end value life insurance from JC Penny subsidiary many years ago, paying monthly. When she had medical complications I took over a lot of her finances. When I discovered this automatic deduction, I figured out she had paid into the account close to $2200 and told her that. Before I could do anything, a few days later she called and cancelled the account. My problem with the company (Stonebridge, I think was the name) was why wasn't there an automatic stoppage of premiums when the max payout was reached? Not that it would have helped at that time or when she died, but it would have made sense. I guess business is business and humanity stops where the business begins.

I saw this with my parents. My dad got a long-term care policy and paid on it for decades. Yes, the premiums were very low because he got it early, but by the time they actually could have used it there were so many technicalities and stipulations and the reality was it was easier to care for our mom through other means than what the policy would have covered. If you're buying insurance unless it is one of the big companies that will still be around you're not likely to get use out of it decades later because they could be bought and sold. Probably also another reason to switch simple insurance like auto and homeowner's every 5 years too, so that you know it is up to date for your needs as well as competitively priced.

Still worth looking into! Every state has different qualifications for Medicaid.

@@romeysiamese6662 I'd imagine at this stage of his disease and advanced age he's signed over, sold or lost his possessions and assets including home and savings so maybe only a Social Security income at best. Just a thought, worth it to look into Medicaid at least.

Our insurance company for auto, home and life is Amica. They are a mutual insurance company- member owned like a credit union, basically a not-for-profit. We get a dividend check every year where we get our share of the profits- that is enough to make one or two monthly payments. Back in 2020 when everybody stopped driving to work and claims fell, we got a second dividend check. My wife's last job was dealing with auto insurance claims when people would run off the road and hit a guide rail, road sign, etc. Amica is great to work with on both ends, whether you're a policyholder or filing a claim against their policyholder.

Actually there are facilities that have memory care dept or solely focuses on dementia. I suggest transfer him then reapply. I know this because I’m a nurse. The son should look around first. 🤦‍♂️

The problem was a lack of a 24 hours on site nurse. Presumably a facility with one would be more expensive.

My grandfather was unable to understand all his financials and had to turn that over to my Dad. Dad found an term life insurance policy that would only pay off, if Grandpa died in the hospital's ambulance as a result of a motor vehicle accident, on the way to the hospital. Dad cancelled it.

I have personally known two men whose parents had "longterm care” insurance policies. They lived at home into their late 80’s. Neither family was ever able to collect a dime for nursing care over similar exclusions in the policies. I don’t think this story here is uncommon.

The advice being shared here: forget paying an insurance company and pay yourself...set up a savings account and don't touch the amount you deposit every month. In 24 years you'd have 25k guaranteed.
