What bothers me is that so many City fans seem to be relying our past and not paying attention to our present. This years performances have been quite poor relative to previous seasons. But why? The tradeoff of playing wingbacks seems to be poor as nearly every team (regardless of how good they are) have got joy from giving away major chances on the counter. What Walker offers in attack is not as good to what he offers in defense, and yet Pep continues to do this. Why? Gvaediol is a CB and not a LB and yet Pep continues to play him as a wingback/LB bc he’s bette r with the ball than Ake but again, defensively, he gets skinned on counters where Ake stays back a bit and can shut down a lot of counter on his side. Yet Pep persists with this. Why? All it does is create pressure on what’s left of our backline and we get forced errors by defense and concede gials Same can be said with the midfield. Forcing Alvarez in midfield looked good in first handful of games, but by December, there was plenty of evidence that it was a poor tradeoff - forcing Foden wide or benching a midfield players so Alvarez could play, yet Pep still does this up to our last game. He finally benched Alvarez. Why has that taken so long for Pep? Pep has often left Rodri on his own in the midfield which no one player could ever cover, he gets rolled by 2-3 players on a counter (both Chelsea games and LFC for example) and yet Pep still has done this when it doesn’t work. Taken in whole, it seems Pep is not interested in playing his best players in their best positions and setting the team to win. Why? Is it any wonder this season has been his worst since coming to the PL. So many fans keep prattling on about the notion that City will kick on like ears past. Well, that has all happened before March. We’re now approaching April and Pep doesn’t know his best 11 from what we’ve seen. Why?

His first season was his worst in the prem but I accept all your other points. I've always said there is a fine line between genius and being a madman and Pep always seems to tread that line. Mostly he's gotten away with it and that's why he's a genius. Look at our CL campaigns and he's a madman.
