"Man Eater," fiddled by Vernon "Peanut" Payne (1921-2016) of Berea, Kentucky, March 4, 1996. Recording by Brad Leftwich.
Linda and I first met Peanut at the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. We were playing tunes in the parking lot, and this old guy sat down next to us and kept asking for tunes that the general public wouldn't know. So we asked him if he played fiddle, and he said he did. We got his address and phone number, and a number of years later I went to visit him, when I made this and other recordings. He was friends with fiddler Walter McNew and used to play music with him.
