Superstitions are a powerful thing; not counting the teradactyles that are still seen flying at night on Papa New Guinea.

The Kokoda Trail was an awful place. Japanese mistakenly offloaded their army there. There was no road or trail for army to travel to Port Moresby. Just a dead end suicidal exercise. That forest is lethal with several tropical diseases, lack of drinking water and Japanese did not carry enough food. Dying of starvation, several malarias, exhaustion and attacking allies. Failure, suffering and death. That little trail was only partially there, repeated high mountains, constant slippery mud carrying heavy weapons. The jungle was so dense even flat ground is terrible to go through. Complete mistake planning an offensive while looking at a map from Tokyo 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
