Just because he loves his parents and tried to help them does NOT mean they were good parents. Take it from someone who was abused as a child, you never know what ugliness can be hidden just below the surface in any family. Blindly praising people and attributing all sorts of positive characteristics to them because of one positive news report of one moment in the lives of this family is both foolish and naive.

Hey everyone. I grew up in Western NC and we really really need help. There are so many people not accounted for and resources are running low. Just do whatever you can. My heart is broken seeing the places I spent my weekends as a child and in college completely destroyed. My community is strong and has a huge sense of community so we will be okay but right we really need food and water.

I’ve driven up to little Switzerland from the base of the mountain where he started… it’d be a grueling hike for even an average conditioned athlete, much less an average joe with luggage on his back. With all the debris to navigate around on top of that it’s hella impressive

@@bdbatu They were surviving just fine but he didn't know if they were alive or dead, because in case you missed it, a lot of people got swept away by water or mudslides. Still at least 600 people missing and reports of bodies being found in fields and muddy cars.

I have very warm feelings for Little Switzerland. As a kid, my folks stopped there at a lovely motel overlooking the Blue Ridge. That evening the clouds built up in the valley below and steadily climbed up, spilling over to the next valley. I will never forget the wonder and beauty of that scene, looking down as dusk crept in. It was magical. All my good wishes to the people of NC and the surrounding areas for a safe and full recovery.

Mitchell and Avery Counties have been completely devastated and the situation is dire. There was extreme flooding in every valley that just sucked the road or bridge into the river, and on the ridges above the rain was so heavy and the ground was so saturated, entire mountainsides came sliding down and covered those roads completely.

I went through the same kind of situation to get to my mother's house after Hurricane Ida. Im in Louisiana, so i didn't have to go up a mountain. But what is usually a 10 minute drive took me over 5 hours to get to her. I know exactly what he means when he talks about that relief.

The number of bridges. Rebuilding roads to withstand and already harsh environment. Returning the areas to that as close to pristine condition as possible. Power lines. Water infrastructure. Not to mention homes. Feeding the masses during the interim. It's just mind boggling.

They might be better off just clearing and excavating the general roadway and laying down some gravel for now. Although from the pictures and videos there is clearly some major work ahead in terms of shoring up the underlying ground and regrading the area. It'd be no good if repairs made didn't last at least a few months.
